CITY LIFE 19303 by Kevin Lyle

Kevin Lyle says, "City Life - Cities are often full of drama, some more than others. The intensity of the drama within city life is balanced by simple, less dramatic vistas that may provide food for thought, humor, comfort or wonder. I present some of these simple tableaux.

As long as I can remember, I've been curious about incidental objects and environments and their potential for a sort of extraordinary/ordinary beauty. I find this quality in the work of photographer Eugene Atget, composer Erik Satie and singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie. These great artists are a constant source of inspiration.

My process is fueled by an innate hunter/gatherer impulse. Most of my images are collected within walking distance of my home on Chicago's north side. Contemplative wandering in the urban analog world, away from the preponderance of drama delivered digitally via television and the Internet, reveals evidence of real life - evidence of what may be, may have happened or may yet occur. Sometimes mundane, sometimes oblique, askew or atypical. Mostly overlooked, until documented."

ASCENSION by Kathryn Dunlevie
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Kathryn Dunlevie says of her series 'Entanglement', "Recent human activity has brought about environmental change on a colossal scale. As increased levels of carbon dioxide in our air cause temperatures and sea levels to rise, the ecosystems upon which animals and plants depend suffer along with all our natural and developed environments.

We can no longer avoid the fact that all aspects of the physical world are intricately linked. Discoveries in quantum physics, moreover, teach us that even at the subatomic level, quantum entanglement can cause particles to become interrelated and affected by each other’s behavior.

To illustrate this interconnectedness, I am combining my photos of zoos and natural history museums with those of contemporary urban settings. The compositions suggest our planet’s current state of disruption and the strange bedfellows this disruption creates.

As I build each composition, interweaving elements from the natural world with images from constructed spaces, displaced animals materialize in anomalous locations. Stunned to find themselves in alien surroundings – disoriented, mistrustful, even forlorn – they mutely proclaim their vulnerability, and remind us of our own."

Kathryn Dunlevie is a photography-based artist whose work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and internationally. Cathy Kimball, former Executive Director of the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, writes of Dunlevie’s work: "Through brilliant compositional detail and manipulation, she creates disconcerting, inexplicable spaces and scenarios - streetscapes that elude mapmakers and interior settings that are almost, but not quite, right."

Born on the east coast, Dunlevie lived in six different states by the time she was 12, and in Paraguay when she was 16. She has a B.A. in fine arts from Rice University, and studied art history and film at the University of Paris, painting at California College of the Arts, and photography in Madrid. She lives in Palo Alto.

Dunlevie has received numerous awards and fellowships, including two Arts Council Silicon Valley Artist Laureate Fellowships. Her work has been exhibited at FotoFest International since 2002, at the Pingyao International Photography Festival in China, at Studio Thomas Kellner in Germany, in the US Art in Embassies Program in Moscow and in Saatchi Arts’ Best of 2014.

Publications reviewing her work have included Spain’s La Fotografia Actual, Korea’s photo + and Germany’s Profifoto, as well as The New York Times, Camerawork: A Journal of Photographic Arts, Photo Metro, Artweek, and Artlies.

WINDOWS BY Joshua Tann

Joshua Tann is a California-based fine art photographer.  He believes that photography is the best medium for his artistic work because it gives him the most creative freedom. Most of his photographic images are influenced by his love of travel, art and architecture, something that was nurtured throughout his youth and adulthood. His childhood goal to be an architect was derailed by life circumstances, but his love and interest in architecture continued throughout his life.

In 2011 photography became his medium to express this passion, despite his profession as a psychotherapist.
He received a certificate in Professional Photography from the New York Institute of Photography. He also received a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University (Malibu, California) as his formal education.

His creative process started every time he is drawn to a certain scene, event or object. Almost every image he took involved a building or a structure as the main object or background. This is consistent to his interest in architecture and how humanity interact with their environment, particularly the surrounding structures and buildings.

Aesthetics will always be a factor during the first few seconds of selecting an image, followed by other factors, such as the relationships between lighting and contrast, perspective and structures or angles and environment. A final photograph would eventually emerge from this process as the expression of his creative interpretation of that image with the hope of inspiring the viewing public.

His architectural influence ranges from the Renaissance and Gothic periods of the Italian duomos and palazzos to the modern design lines of Frank Lloyd Wright, Frank Gehry, and Michael Graves.

Although architecture is the basis of his photographic work, he is starting to develop interests in other subject matters in photography based on its visual perspective. This includes street photography, where humanity can become the main subject in the context of its environment.

He had exhibited nationally including Los Angeles Center for Photography, Black Box Gallery in Portland, OR, ASmith Gallery in Johnson City, TX, The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, CO, Praxis Gallery in Minneapolis, MN, SXSE Gallery in Molena, GA, Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, MA.

Internationally he had exhibited in London, UK, Budapest, Hungary, Tokyo, Japan and Paris. He was also selected by several international photography competitions for their awards.

AT THE MUSEUM #8 by Jim McKinniss
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Jim McKinniss says of his series, 'At the Museum', "I am a great admirer of the Impressionist painters, especially Degas.

My travels have taken me to 32 countries. Whenever possible I explore the museums in the cities that I find myself visiting. During my trip to Paris in 2019 I learned that there was an Impressionist exhibition at Musee D’Orsay and another at the Grand Palais. I went to both and while at Musee D’orsay I had the idea to make Impressionist-like photographs of the exhibition. To do that I simply used a long shutter and added a slight camera movement. I continued with this idea while visiting the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California.

The results of those museum visits are what you see in these photos."

CHILD ALOFT by Jesse Kieffer
(Click on image for larger view)

Jesse Kieffer says, "I am a beginning photographer with a love for my city that I struggle to express.

One way to tell a city you love it, as you might a person, is to hold it in your gaze. To look closely enough to observe its intricacies—stone mermaids writhing high on the corners of historic buildings, the glow of a streetlight illuminating a stranger’s face—and from far enough away that you can find it in its place along the curvature of the earth, surrounded by distant stars.

I cannot observe in this way with my eyes alone. I need a lens—that miraculous circle of polished glass inside which the world comes into focus. And a camera of course, and long afternoons and nights to carry it through city streets and neighborhoods. When I lace up my shoes and drape my camera strap over my shoulder, I am preparing to seek my beloved. It is my hope that my tenderness toward my city and its people will show in these photographs—that the observer’s gaze will linger there, as mine has, if only for a moment."

Jesse Kieffer was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and has lived there for most of her life. As long as she can remember, she has loved language, and in 2012 graduated from the University of Massachusetts having received several awards for her writing. Her work has appeared Audubon, AMC Outdoors, and Hippocampus Magazine, among other publications.

Inherent in the discipline of writing is the ability to visualize a scene, and the elements of a compelling written scene mirror those of a good photograph. So for Jesse, the addition of photography to her creative life was a natural transition. She bought a small mirrorless digital camera and joined the venerable, 140 year-old Boston Camera Club in December of 2020.

During the long COVID lockdown hours, she wandered the streets of Boston for hours each day, taking hundreds of out-of focus and poorly-composed photographs. Over time though, the pictures got better. She started winning camera club contests, and her photograph, After the Party, was awarded an Honorable Mention in the 2021 edition of the International Photography Awards.

Jesse is passionate about photography, dedicated to both the art and the craft. She hopes someday to combine her skills as a writer and photographer in photojournalism.

WITNESS by Jason Tannen
(Click on image for larger view)

Jason Tannen says of his series, 'Remnant' (color images 1-4), "For many years, I’ve photographed the urban environment, focusing on images without people or street action. I’m particularly interested in the landscape of signs, symbols, pictures-within-pictures, and curious or eccentric juxtapositions.

Prior to this series, I printed mainly in black and white. I started working in color to explore the visual and material erosion that comes with time, the elements, or human intervention: posters that are bleached from the sun, with their colors reduced to blues and reds; surfaces that have cracked or are peeling; objects that have been vandalized.

In 2020 and 2021, the COVID–19 pandemic curtailed my urban wanderings. Because of Covid, I didn’t go out to shoot for over a year. During all that time at home, I revisited my photographic archives. Some of the photographs I’d originally passed over from this project took on new meaning and interest for me. It’s interesting how the passage of time and changing circumstances can alter your perceptions.

The Edge of Night (black and white images 5-6)

For over three decades my work has explored the urban landscape. An ongoing inspiration for me has been Film Noir, a genre of American film from the 1940s and 50s, usually set in the urban jungle and featuring desperate people in dire situations. Film Noirs took full advantage of their city locations and a low-key black and white style to create a mood of anxiety, mystery, and anticipation.

My photographs feature characteristically Noir settings, with stark light, dramatic shadows, skewed framing, and characters whose faces are mask-like or partially obscured. My interest in cinematic form extends to the type of images created for this series, including establishing, reaction, and cutaway shots. Thus, these images can be sequenced to suggest any number of dark narratives."

Jason Tannen is a photographer, gallery curator and educator. He has exhibited his works widely in the United States and internationally, with recent exhibitions in Tucson, AZ, Sacramento, CA, Las Vegas, NV, New York, San Francisco, Portland, OR, Seattle, WA, Rome, Italy, Fukushima, Japan, and Budapest, Hungary.

Tannen is represented in many public collections, including the Chicago Art Institute, Chicago, IL; the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA; and The National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship Archive, Washington, D.C.

From 1998 to 2014, he directed the University Art Gallery at California State University, Chico, where he also taught Gallery Production, Film Studies, and the History of Photography.

He received his MFA in Photography from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his BFA from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA.
