JUROR STATEMENTS:
Diana H. Bloomfield says, "I was taken aback by all the uniquely wonderful entries submitted to L.A. Photo Curator’s The Handmade Tale. Debbie Achen and I initially juried these entries separately. We then came together to talk about the overlaps and differences. We reviewed and discussed all the images together before
coming to our joint decisions.
As with any jurying process, I know that an entire alternate selection of equally wonderful submissions could have been made here, too, and so- in the end- these final few choices became somewhat subjective. I was drawn to so much of this work, impressed by the choices made, the visions realized, and the always appreciated handmade, often laborious, work that went into the making of each one.
Thank you all for sharing your compelling visual stories with us. It was an honor. Much appreciation, too, to Laurie Freitag of LA Photo Curator for the invitation to jury, and to my co-juror, Debbie Achen, who was always open to my views, and who generously shared her own. (She also has some mad spreadsheet capabilities!). It was a pleasure. I hope you enjoy seeing all the work, and our Award selections."

Debra Achen:
“I believe that a work of art created by a human touch may contain a resonance of that touch, a lingering aura.”
~ Brian Taylor
Debra Achen says, "When Diana Bloomfield and I came up with the theme for “The Handmade Tale” we wanted to leave the call open to a wide range of work that merges content and process and employs a handmade component to tell the story. And I have to say we got what we asked for! The range of photographic mediums and techniques submitted was incredible, as was the talent and creativity of all the entrants.
We went through the entries individually first, identifying those we thought were the strongest fit with the theme. Then came the most difficult part of comparing our notes and narrowing down our selections. Unlike a gallery exhibition where you can select 30 – 40 works of art or more, we could only choose 8 to be recognized. There are pieces that are masterful from a technical perspective and others where the content takes precedence.
It was challenging to focus on a balance and that led to many interesting discussions about photography, artmaking, and story-telling and ultimately to our award selections.
I would like to sincerely thank the entrants for this opportunity to discover and explore their imaginative and compelling work. Through this process you have expanded my perspective in new directions. This applies to all the work in this virtual exhibition and I invite everyone to discover and explore for themselves."
