23RD STREET SUBWAY ENTRY by Kip Harris
(Click on image for larger view)
(Click on image for larger view)
Kip Harris says, "I grew up in a small farming community in Idaho. When viewed from there, the city was an alien, bizarre, and incomprehensible place. A place filled with magic, mystery, and madness. My family moved to Salt Lake City when I was a teenager. My high school had more students than my previous small town had people. Then I learned that this city was just a small town with a lot of people.
As an architect and street photographer, a major city is where the action is. London, Paris, Rome, Hanoi, Mumbai have wonders around each corner. Something previously unseen and unknown. It is a continuous encounter with the other. Samuel Johnson in 1777 said “…when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life…”
When I’m walking in a big city, I’m not looking for the famous or familiar but rather for the surprising and unexpected. The one image that can stand in place for an entire moment of a city’s life."
Harris holds degrees in English literature from Dartmouth College, in humanities from the University of Chicago, and architecture from the University of Utah. He was a principal of FFKR Architects in Salt Lake City for nearly 30 years.
A serious photographer since the late 80s, he has exhibited in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe with four solo and over one hundred group shows. He has been published in Shots Magazine, The Photo Review, Art Reveal, Smithsonian.com, Street Photography Magazine, Barren Magazine, Tagree, Square, Black and White (cover) and a number of on-line photographic sites.
He now lives on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, Canada in an 1823 cottage overlooking the St. Margaret’s Bay. He is the technical director for his wife’s Company X Puppets (a highly portable puppet, dance, theater group established to present intimate mixed media works).

CHILDREN OF SHADOW by Laila Nahar
(Click on image for larger view)
(Click on image for larger view)
Laila Nahar says of her series,"Dhaka - Songs from Mist and Fog", "This is the story of longing for my hometown Dhaka (Bangladesh), a multi-layer book project combining black & white photos of fog/mist with color photos of Dhaka and the people.
Dhaka is a very different city as the fog blanket envelopes from all corners.
It weaves in its gentle threads of mist and light. There is no hurry in the subdued radiance brushing over this city, my city of past, present and future. It feels too harsh to speak. Mystery and romance shrouds everywhere. I feel no sense of time and space What lies in the translucence?
This is my inner land. What can I still make out through the fog and what may have been lost in there?
Will it reveal
The world of laughter and skipping ropes from my childhood?
The romance of a stare
The cattle grazing and the smoke from the clay stove
Is it the silhouette of a dear friend that walks in the fog?
Or will it be the future I dream of?
Dreams fill my heart.....
Fog can be seen as a metaphor to my inner state. The color photos are when fog lifts over and light breaks through the mist. I am looking at the land and people in it, but I am really talking about inner-land and nostalgia. This is finding the city through photos and words.
I have had this inevitable fascination for photography since my childhood. It was some 30+ years back, but I can’t say with certainty when I picked up the first camera and captured my first story. The immense mystery of love, joy, heart-breaks; the all-consuming desperation in loss and the dream of fields through open windows; how they all submerge together to form the photograph that I ache to capture. A photograph that is not a moment, not an individual; it has no beginning, no present, no end. A photograph that is life at its unobstructed essence.
I have lived my life in stark cultural contrast. Born and brought up in Bangladesh and eventually migrated to the US in my late 20’s in 1995. Opposite side of our planet and opposite culture; yet the essence of my photography remains the same. I started out as a black and white film photographer putting together my own darkroom and doing my own printmaking. Later I moved to digital and in the recent past have been fascinated by book making.
I had taken photojournalism and darkroom classes at the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh. Once migrating to the USA, I took documentary classes with Eugene Richards, Frank Espada, Amy Arbus, Keith Carter. Lately, I have become increasingly fascinated with hand-made photo book making and attended workshops with Elizabeth Avedon, Void Impromptu, ‘Self Publish Be Happy' and with the Center of Book Arts in NYC.
I have had solo exhibitions from ‘Memories from Bangladesh’ series in Steps Gallery (Arizona) and Nelson Gallery (California). Photographs from the same series are in permanent collections of ASU and UC Davis Art photography Museums. 'Songs from Mist and Fog' is a book-project that I designed as part of Void Impromptu Workshop. My recent project ‘I Have Been Here Before’ - a hand-made photo book has been selected for the ‘12th Annual Self-Published PhotoBook Show’ in Davis Orton Gallery and Griffin Museum of Photography. My photographs have been exhibited in several group exhibitions by Viewpoint gallery, UC Berkeley, and PhotoPlace gallery."

GLIMMERANCE 1 by Larissa Rolley

(Click on image for larger view)
Larissa Rolley says, "I became interested in the reflected sunlight as I roamed around Chicago during the pandemic.
I came across a term in an architectural article calling this light 'Glimmerance' - the patterns of light across the streets and buildings. I love seeing how the windows of buildings aesthetically shape the sunlight, reflect it back, and it falls across other buildings and the streets. It becomes a transient element that connects buildings with the city as a backdrop. In this seriece, I wanted to capture this light show and various reflections. I hope some architects are inspired to take this into consideration for future buildings"
Larissa Rolley has an MFA from Columbia College Chicago. Her work is in the collections of Deloitte, Alliance Française de Chicago, Northbridge Group, Columbia College, and other private collections.

"I am Leanne Trivett. I am a photographer. I have spent seven years exploring different genres of photograghy. In 2021, I have focused on Experimental Self Portraiture, Abstracts, and Infrared / Black and White. My desire is to connect to the viewer in a meaningful and emotional way. I am exploring multiple sides of me: the light and dark, the happy and sad, and the smooth and textured. Every image I make is a part of my inner world. I seek a connection to my audience in that space of duality building a bridge through emotion and humanity."

CITYSCAPE by Magdeleine Ferro

(Click on image for larger view)
Magdéleine FERRU aka JustMagd says, "Different style photographer, what I feel connects with what I have seen, what I have lived.... To live abroad, learning new languages, traditions, discovering other beliefs, religions, lifestyle....Witnessing other's life; Being a watcher, but also feeling.
From my personal experiences, I explore feelings and matters, existence basic issues : body, identity, human nature, time passing, death. I show what I see, or play with different process. My pictures are a blend of portrait, nude, documentary or landscape.
My projects are more and more brought to life through hand-made unique art books or different plastic art technique; I upcycle, make, create, mixing matter to my visual work.
I experiment more and more alternative process (cyanotype, toy camera, etc...) and polaroids, which I use to convey the feeling of time passing and memories. The instant photo captures an emotion, brief, disappeared. These images taken at various times in my life, create a dialogue between them. They make simple moments beautiful. Like waves on the sand, the Polaroid image leaves an print -more or less readable- of my perception of the world."
Magdéleine -JustMagd- is a french photographer. She exhibits "Tokyo dans mon Keitai" in Tokyo in 2009 (under the patronage of the French Ambassy) and shows her photos during festivals and exhibitions (Houston Center for Photography, La Passerelle centre d'Art, Le Lac Gelé, Polaroid festival, etc...).
Books interest her more and more, she learns graphic design and lay out. She attendes workshops "Traveling Photos" with Jacques Sierpinski (2014), "Family album" with Alain Laboile (2017), "Produce a photographic series" with Claudine Doury (2018), "Cyanotype" with Fabienne Forel (2018), "The photographic project" with Richard Petit (2019), "Browsing through and editing your photographs" with Nicolas Havette (2019) ), "Sculpture book" Musée de Mariemont (2019) and "Copte binding" with Marjon Mudde (2019).
