EXHIBITION #5
L.A. Photo Curator: Global Photography Awards - 'Where Photography & Philanthropy Meet' EXHIBITION #5
A MASK by Petr Vapenik

Petr Vapenik is a self-taught amateur photographer, originally from the Pilsen region (West of Czech Republic), now living in Dobrichovice near Prague. For him, photography is primarily about enjoying the world around him. He has worked successively as a scientist in the field of natural sciences, a teacher of chemistry, a marketing specialist and an IT architect.

He has been taking photographs since childhood, first only black and white and home-made photos, later also colour and infrared ones. He has been exhibiting publicly since 2013 and has had 9 solo exhibitions in the Czech Republic. Since 2020 he has been participating in selected international photography competitions, in which he has won many awards. Probably the most important awards for him are 1st place and Gold Star Winner in ND Awards 2022, Gold Award and Gallery Award in San Francisco Bay International Photography Awards 2020, Silver Winner in Prix de la Photographie, Paris 2022 and 2x Silver Winner in New York Photography Awards 2022.

Above all, he tries to make visible what is often not seen at first glance, so called “pictures from behind-the-light”. He often uses photo filters and very long exposures in different areas of the spectrum. In specific projects he also uses ICM techniques. He looks for unconventional images in shots of flowing water, often in the infrared region of the spectrum. His desire is to make "beautiful images that don't lie".

The photographs are not primarily intended for common sale.

THE FEELING OF MAKING THE FAMILY SKELETON DANCE by Polina Schneider

Born in Leningrad in 1989 during the harsh times of the Perestroika and being socialized in different languages, cultures and religious beliefs have sharpend Polina Schneider's intuition towards the way people interact with each other.

Her personal leitmotivs are promoting environmental photography, drawing attention to social wrongs, shaping public discourse and ensuring that the perspectives of women are seen by the public.

In 2022, galleries in L.A, Paris, Rome, Berlin and Hanover exhibited some of Polina's recent works. Artist Statement: "I, Superhero" This photo series speaks to everyone who has a Russian background, who feels insecure, alone and overwhelmed by the political propaganda becoming reality.

For everyone who is afraid what their actions or even thoughts once spoken out loud can cause: Political consequences, fights and cuts in parental home, alienation from friends and family. In quiet, ordinary moments when we can't grasp what's happening in the world, it is important to remember that there is a superhero in each of us - however this may look like.

GAS PUMPS by Robin Bell

Robin Bell says, "On this project I strove to make photographs of junk feel paradoxically alive by creating surreal abstractions that imply an otherworldly organicity. The images are often in pairs that relate to each other. They imagine a world where inanimate objects suggest a range of human experiences such as connection and sensuality.

The original images were photographed at my town dump.  In my rural community there is no trash pickup, so I haul my own garbage and recyclables there.  It's an industrial site. The place was a landscape of possibility filled with machinery and the debris left behind out of the recycling stream. Some cast offs looked like alien life forms. There were striking textures and colors of peeling paint and rust. The machinery was geometric and color worn.

Through digital deconstruction and recombination, lens-based media created digital collages. Those collages, industrial abstractions, were then transformed into magical relationships."

Robin Bell began photography after a broken back left her disabled and alone in a small rural community, where she created a rehab regimen of walks to an on an old house.  This caused her to buy her first camera to photograph the abstract reflections of the house's windows, for weeks.  The walks led to her complete recovery.

Bell is now based in New York City and Block Island, Rhode Island. She had a recent 2-year stint in Los Angeles. Whether exploring a New England farmhouse window, a Los Angeles pool or digital abstractions of junk, her work directly follows from her first photographs of the old house's windows.  Her projects are on the individual experience from abstract color and shape. They are an examination of one place, and that place is within walking distance of her home.

Bell’s work has been exhibited nationally in, among other places, Los Angeles, New York, Minneapolis, Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and Portland, Oregon. She will be in upcoming shows in Atlanta and Budapest, Hungary.  She was a selected artist in the LACP group show, Street Photography Around the World completion.

Her community work has included her role as executive board member of the Spring Street Gallery on Block Island, Rhode Island, where she has developed exhibitions and free classes for local artists.

ROADTRIP CONSTRUCTION by Stephanie Sydney
HONORABLE MENTION

Stephanie Sydney is a London-born artist who currently resides in Venice, California. She works in several media including mixed media, assemblage sculpture, installation, performance art, photography and digital collages. Her work is in several collections including Banque BNP Paribas and Morgan Stanley in New York. She has had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Art and History (MOAH:Cedar), Brand Library Art Gallery; Crafton Hills College Art Gallery, Gallery 825, California; and Villa di Donato in Naples, Italy. Many group shows include Launch LA, and the Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles, California; Site: Brooklyn Gallery, New York; San Diego Museum of Art, and BG Gallery in Bergamot Station, Santa Monica, California; and Gallery FotoNostrum, Barcelona, Spain where she received a Julia Margaret Cameron  honorable mention.

As global warming and climate change continue to wreak havoc on the earth’s ecosystem, Stephanie Sydney examines the behaviors and attitudes of human nature and their direct contribution to the destruction and decay of the natural world. Through her digital collages, she combines her knowledge of painting and digital photography. These collages are created through the use of Photoshop where she manipulates and layers her photographs on top of one another. This becomes a new vision like memories that pile up to form a personality. Through this layering of images, Sydney examines her fascination with the idea of juxtaposition between extreme concepts like life and death, strength and fragility, chaos and order, among others.

AUTOMATION-1 by Suzette Dushi

Suzette Dushi says, "These images are part of my series titled: Phantasm. Starting with my own photographs of “The Mannequins” and using cutouts and snippets from newspapers, magazines, pamphlets or any other found images I create surrealist collages. I start creating tableaus without a conscious idea at first.

They are mere fragments of a surreal world created by my subconscious. My collages blend fantasy with reality. Inanimate objects become part of the real world thus creating tension and sometimes discomfort. The characters become actors and invite the viewer to imagine the narrative. I then re-photograph these collages.

Sometimes the end product is in color, sometimes in black and white and sometimes the collage becomes a negative creating a more fantastical and strange world. The possibilities are limited only by my own imagination!"

Suzette Dushi was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1957. She graduated from New York University with a degree in Marketing and worked as a financial analyst in banking. She studied photography at the International Center of Photography.

Her work has been accepted into various group exhibitions in the US and Europe, including the Istanbul Biennial, the Islip Art Museum and the 13th and 17th Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers. Her photographs have been published in various publications. She was awarded Gold Artist for her work “Winter” by ArtAscent Magazine. Her work is in private collections in the US and abroad.

Suzette Dushi lives and works in New York and Long Island.

REJUVENATION by Tom Chambers
HONORABLE MENTION

Tom Chambers says, "This series was inspired by my return to international travel in 2022. Just as life had changed for many people from the impact of covid, my photomontage photography work shifted from the elements of magic realism to the elements of surrealism. The irrationality of those covid years is reflected in the series, as is the depth of the unconscious mind.  Yet, this series mimics the color and light of early Renaissance frescoes. Through the resumption of travel, I was drawn to the idea of blending the influences of Italian Renaissance art and surrealism resulting a contemporary look and feel"

Photographer Tom Chambers was raised in the Amish farm country of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Tom completed a B.F.A. in 1985 from The Ringling College of Art, Sarasota, Florida majoring in graphic design with an emphasis in photography. Since 1998 Tom has exhibited photomontage images from eleven photographic series both nationally and internationally in twenty five solo exhibitions and over seventy five group exhibitions and art fairs.

UNICORN TRIPTYCH by Valerie Burke

Valerie Burke says of her series, 'Through the Pinhole', "My early pinhole photography was a means of getting in touch with myself.  I used the patio for taking the images.  It was the stage for my personal dramas and the yard was a jungle which had grown up around me during years I was raising a family.

The pinhole cameras I used to take the pictures were a hatbox and a bathroom hamper; both were laden with domestic memories.  The use of a pinhole camera was a 19th century manner of shooting.  The simplicity of its means--no lens and no film but sunlight pouring through a tiny opening in a piece of copper. It yielded memories over a paper negative which cinched content and means.

The pinhole gave vent to a personal preoccupation with playfulness, exploration and risk taking."

Valerie Burke is a fine art photographer and educator. She lives in Fort Collins, Colorado with her family. She has loved Pinhole Photography for many years and is now combining it, or the idea of it,
in her landscape photography which she now prints digitally.

Valerie's photography has been exhibited at the Illinois State Museum, Chicago, Illinois, The Lofoten International Art Center, Svolvaer, Norway; The Chicago Cultural Center, Klein Art Works, Chicago, Illinois, The Midwest Photographer's project, Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, Illinois; the Sixth Annual New York Digital Salon, The Visual Arts Museum, New York City and the Center for Fine Arts Photography, Fort Collins, Colorado and a Collective exhibit: Shootapalooza during Houston's 2016 Biennial FotoFest. Currently she has work in the exhibit: Enlighten with the Shootapalooza photography group at the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, Mass.

Valerie's work has been published in several editions of the Pinhole Journal, Leonardo magazine and multiple issues of The Hand magazine. Valerie's photographs are held in the collection of The History Museum of New Mexico, The California Museum of Photography, Riverside, CA; the Graham Nash Collection of Photography, Encino, California, the National Museum for Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.; and the Pinhole Resource, San Lorenzo, New Mexico.

Valerie has recently published a book: The Adventures of the Thin Man (2014) , Shell Photography (2018) and Adventures in Cyanotype, (2020) .In 2016 Valerie won awards for her cyanotypes at the Tokyo International Foto Awards: Silver and an Honorable Mention.

A highlight of her career has been exhibiting at the New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe--"The Poetics of Light" an exhibit of pinhole photographers from around the world. The traveling exhibit is accompanied by a catalog: "The Poetics of Light, Pinhole Photography by the late/ great Pinhole Photographer Eric Renner, founder of the Pinhole Journal and Pinhole Resource.

2021 Valerie was awarded an Honorable Mention for her image: Summer in a Day by the Tokyo International Foto Festival. She also published her book with Blurb: Autumn Passages.

THE DREAMER by Vicky Stromee

Vicky Stromee says, "Hopefulness sometimes comes from our search for what is beyond us. I grew up with the race to space and my imagination was captivated by what we might find on some distant world. The universe held possibilities just waiting to be discovered.

In these images I explore “New Worlds” where inner experience is reflected in the outer world. Using ordinary imagery as evocators of those distant worlds that might yet offer us a renewed reverence for our collective lives here on planet earth.

At 8, I got my first Brownie camera. Watching an image magically emerge from my dad’s developing tray and feeling the waves of sound resonating through me from my mother’s piano playing; texture, pattern, fluidity, and change were my earliest influences, and they continue to unfold in my work. My work has been featured at Griffin Museum of Photography, Waxlander, A Smith and Afterimage galleries and has representation through Cynthia Byrnes Contemporary Art."
