TO WHICH WE RETURN UNTITLED NO 143 by Kristoffer Johnson
HONORABLE MENTION
HONORABLE MENTION
Kristoffer Johnson says, "To Which We Return", "This series focuses on the impermanence and fragility of the human body and the physiological problems that are inherent in existence. The human body is a fragile construct that ages and decays. The Buddhist concept of impermanence states, everything is temporary and subject to rise and fall. Mortality is an unavoidable and inevitable fact that humanity must face despite the sense of control which society and self-awareness give us. Reflection on death is a shared concept throughout human history. This work draws from two such traditions, the Buddhist meditation Maranasati “mindfulness of death” and the Western visual tradition of Memento Mori “remember that you will die.”
Maranasati invites one to visualize and contemplate their body in a state of decay. In this series, I use an alternative photographic process known as Mordançage to externalize this visualization. Photography has long been associated with memory and the desire to immortalize past moments. The photography serves as a constant reminder of time and mortality. Whereas the goal of most photography is the preservation of self and memory, in this work, the fragmented image functions as a reminder of the ever-present specter of the end of the life we know.
The mordançage process used in this series degrades and disrupts photographic materials through a chemical process of decay and destruction. The cracked surfaces and emulsion veils, weighted down by gravity, visually reference collapse and entropy and reflect the material conditions of the human body. The figure’s skin pulls away, merging with the background, breaking down the barrier between body and space. The forms, textures, and colors of the images simultaneously reference geological formations and flesh, tying the body to the world in which it exists and to which it shall return."
Kristoffer Johnson (b.1990) is an artist from Northwest Arkansas whose artwork explores themes of mortality, aging and decay. He received B.A. in journalism and B.F.A. in studio art from the University of Arkansas. In 2021, he received his M.F.A from the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture and Design at Indiana University Bloomington.
He converted to Buddhism at an early age and Buddhist concepts of mortality and impermanence play a major role in his work. He primarily uses historic and alternative photographic processes to create, alter and decay images.
His artwork has been featured in notable exhibitions including, The Incheon Marine Asia Photography and Video Festival in Incheon, South Korea and The National: Best Contemporary Photography 2022 at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. Johnson currently lives in Mishawaka, IN and is the Visiting Lecturer in Photography and Photo Facilities Coordinator at the University of Notre Dame.

BODY ETERNAL by Larry Miller
Larry Miller says, "Surrealism has stayed with me since I first saw Man Ray’s photographs, Joseph Cornell’sboxes, and surrealist films while in school at Philadelphia College of the Arts.I like the fact that Surrealism challenged the current early twentieth-centurymodernism in a different way.
The works submitted to this exhibition suggestthe reality of psychological states, dreams, memories and the subconscious. Myphotographs juxtapose symbols and a world that is not of reality. In most ofthe photographs, I like to strip ordinary objects of their normal significanceand go beyond ordinary prescribed arrangements."

CONNECTING by Lawrence Manning
Lawrence Manning says, "I have been working for several years on a series of images using crows and ravens as transcendental, mystical spirits, traversing physical and spiritual universes. My crows exist both as natural embodiments of a social community, as well as symbols of the power, magic, and myth found in folk
and religious beliefs. They possess amazing gifts, that if and when
recognized, support and nourish our natural world.
Four months ago I experienced a personal, overwhelming tragedy within my family, and I was not able to allow myself to make any new art. In submitting to this call, I discovered that it was important to make new work, new images, and new depictions, even though I do not feel that have a road map now as to what they will look like, and how they might
appear.
The work that I am submitting is early in concept and completion, often
confusing and chaotic, half-baked, searching and grasping, but very real
and honest. This call allows me to be myself, making art for a cathartic
purpose. Some of the examples here are experimental, raw, and unpackaged. But they are meaningful images, and whatever emotion comes out in today’s work will have resonance and importance moving
forward, creating an artistic vehicle to prevent me from shutting down.
These images reflect my state of mind confused, frustrated and
deliberately non-literal. These images allow me to begin to accept and create a new reality.
It is important to note that the audio wave symbols refer to the crows communicating (caw, caw, caw) to each other, and are real audio representations of the sounds they make."
I am a former commercial photographer. I am exhausted producing images for clients, and now make images for myself. I have gone from being quite successful in objectifying and marketing people, concept and products in photographs as a career, to being uncertain and often alone within my soul.anxious of expressing myself in the anything goes universe of personal, individual creative expression.
I have learned that process is more important than a final product produced by my camera. After years of “hiding” behind the camera, i am now in front of it, the subject of my work.
I am currently active with the Atlanta Photography Group, the Center for Photographic Art, Praxis Gallery, PhotoPlace Gallery, SE Center for Photography, Griffin Museum-Photography, Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts, D’art Gallery, A.Smith Gallery, and many more.
Through the process of entering calls, I have honed my skills with presentation, delivery, and intention.
I have accomplished most of my knowledge acquisition and image-making skills through classes and workshops, and learning how to utilize Photoshop via YouTube.
I tend to look at art (painting, mixed media, sculpture, etc.) more than I do pure photo based work. I do appreciate the masters of photography, but I wish to establish a more contemporary, experimental look for the work i am doing in this phase of my life."

FANTASY by Leanne Trivett S
Leanne Trivett S. says, "I am a visual artist that uses photography to narrate identity in Experimental Self Portraiture, explore subjects in Black and White /Monochrome, and create images that show how details and color interact in the world. My theatrical and vocal performance background inspires me to connect to self and create characters with dynamic stories.
I like to capture scenes from my play, and I also like the out takes. It is my desire to connect to the viewer in a meaningful and emotional way by exploring multiple sides of me: the light and dark, the quiet and the movement, and the smooth and textured. I use my camera and eye for detail to visit the complicated fringe of my personality and my relationships. Every photo I take is a part of my double inner world. I seek a connection to self and the audience in that space of duality, building a bridge through emotion and humanity. All of my imagery is created by photographs I take with my cameras."
Leanne Trivett S. is a visual artist using her own photographs to explore experimental self portraiture, florals, monochrome, and how obscure elements and emotion interact in the world.
She graduated with a BFA in Theatre from Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in NY, NY.
Her background in musical theatre and her years of performing as a professional singer have inspired her creation of characters and self expression through images and photography. She is best known for her colorful and current self portraits and her work with florals.
Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in venues like the Los Angeles Center for Photography, the Griffin Museum of Photography in Boston, PH21 Gallery in Budapest, etc. Her Work has been published and can be seen in several issues of Art Ascent International Magazine, Dodho in Barcelona for Monochrome Awards and the Color Awards 2022, Black & White Magazine, and in several special edition exhibition books.
She was chosen as Honorable Mention for The 18th Annual Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers in 2022 in three categories, won second place in People and Portraits for Digital Photo 2022, received honorable mention in the ND Awards, was the Host of the Masters Group Online 2022 for Gather Academy, She is currently a Gather Pro and is teaching at Sante Fe Workshops, SEC4P, and the Chicago Botanic Garden, all while continuing to create in her artist studio near Asheville, NC.

NEPENTHE BLISS by Leslie Sheryll
Leslie Sheryll says, "My work explores female identity through photography and digital collage by telling or creating stories about women.
