Linda Plaisted is a classically-trained American multi-disciplinary artist whose exploratory practices include photography, collage, encaustic, and painting. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. She has also illustrated book and magazine covers for major publishers and contributed to art and literary journals.

As a pioneer in digital photomontage, each piece of artwork she creates tells a story by pushing beyond the boundaries of medium into mythology using traditions of appropriation, synthesis and reinterpretation. She employs these visionary practices to tell the untold stories of women and the natural world; helping to heal ancestral wounds. Layering pieces she has collected from her original photography and paintings, found images, ancestral documents and collected ephemera, she creates photographic mixed media pieces with translucent veils of narrative and dreamlike symbolism.
Einstein said, "People who believe in physics know that the distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion." Her work represents these layers of time and memory bleeding through one another to create a thinly-veiled liminal space where our ancestors and ourselves can reunite, creating new mythologies for the future.

Linda Plaisted was born in Pennsylvania in 1967, educated at the Art Institute of Philadelphia, Temple University and George Mason University, where she earned degrees in Fine Art, Illustration and Literature. A 2002 Magna Cum Laude graduate of GMU, her final portfolio was recognized as the most creative in her graduating class. As a pioneer in contemporary photomontage, she founded Many Muses Studio in 2000 as a place to explore the marriage of many media. She has led private workshops and acted as artist-in-residence in public and private schools; teaching photography and art workshops to at-risk youth. Having lived in the DC area for over twenty years, she currently lives and works in Frederick, Maryland. After a recent health hiatus, she is seeking studio space to pursue larger mixed media projects.

MARKING TIME by Malcolm Easton

Malcolm Easton says, "My approach to surrealist art draws inspiration from Andre Breton’s affection for previously owned objects. As Katherine Conley1 has discussed at length, Breton believed that such objects—alone or in assemblages—could induce associations akin to those found in dreams.

The elements of my still life images are small domestic objects that I collect from estate sales and thrift stores.  These castoffs individually may seem unimportant. However, irrational combinations and juxtapositions sometimes trigger subconscious associations. I use a process of trial-and-error to discover ways to evoke such associations in myself.  Starting with a single object, I add and remove others until I arrive at a final arrangement.

My method of lighting connects with another approach found in the history of surrealist art—the use of chance as a way to circumvent conventional practices. Photographing in a dimly-lit studio, I use a hand held mirror to reflect a beam of sunlight onto my subjects. Because the mirror is neither steady nor fixed in place, elements of chance affect the illumination, often revealing unexpected patterns of shadow and light."

Malcolm Easton has been a collector and tinkerer all his life. Born in New York, he's a longtime resident of Berkeley, California. His still life photographs and digital collages center on artifacts encountered in daily life.

Malcolm's images reflect our consumer culture and the life cycle of objects that pass through it. His work has won several awards, including Best of Show-Gold from the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (2017).

In 2021 he had four images selected for a yearlong outdoor display at the 19th DongGang International Photo Festival in Korea. His images have appeared in numerous publications, including MAINTENANT 16: Contemporary Dada Writing and Art. Published July 2022 by Three Rooms Press, New York, NY.

LOST WORLD 001 by Maureen Mulhern-White

Maureen Mulhern-White says, "These toned silver gelatin photograms and cyanolumens include my continued use of images of cows, horses, dolls, bubbles, mushrooms, and floating human-like figures. These particular elements are found in much of my work, which seems to be inherently surrealistic. I am particularly drawn to the painterly nature of the cyanolumen.

Each print is different depending upon the type of paper, length of exposure under the UV light, types of agents (mostly kitchen ingredients) that I use to tone the prints. I have included for this call two pieces from three separate series that I am currently working on (a Whitman’s sampler of sorts)."

Maureen Mulhern-White was born in England and spent her early years there before moving to the US and becoming a naturalized citizen. She received a BA from Sarah Lawrence College and an MFA in poetry from the University of Iowa’s Writers’ Workshop.

Along with writing poetry, Maureen utilizes various experimental and historic photographic techniques, including making toned silver gelatin photograms, lumen prints, cyanotypes and cyanolumens. Her work has appeared in galleries throughout the US as well as Europe. Maureen lives in rural Connecticut with her husband, their son, and many cats.

UNTITLED 01 by Naohiro Maeda

Naohiro Maeda says of the series, '“where the wild things are”, "The more I spent time in the states as an immigrant, I feel that I became more unreliable as a narrator. It is tough to tell the new experience to my family and friends in Japan, especially during my first year in the forest in Alaska.

This project is to explore this unreliability. I gave the raw data I captured with a DSLR and the empty dimensions to Photoshop so its intelligence can “retouch” the landscape. I patch-worked “retouched” images and paired 2 reconstructed images to tell a story."

Naohiro Maeda is an artist from Japan. He studied photography at New England School of Photography and the Griffin Museum, and cognitive psychology at Keio University.  He was selected for Japan Photo Award by Xiaopeng Yuan. His works were exhibited in the United States and the United Kingdom including the Griffin Museum of Photography and The Curated Fridge and featured in The Boston Globe.  He is currently living in Ansbach, Germany.

ANIMA by Natalie Arriola

Natalie Arriola says of her series 'Enantiodromia', "Enantiodromia is an exploration of the unconscious. It is a series of images in which I have done my best to open myself up to the unconscious wellspring, allowing what resides there to bubble up to the surface and come in contact with the conscious mind if only for a moment.

These images are like waking dreams. I often begin with an idea or concept I wish to explore. From there mental pictures begin to form and I choose to pursue those which seem most promising. I rarely remember my nighttime dreams, but in this daylight dance between the conscious desire for control and the unconscious refusal to be tethered, I uncover the mysteries of my inner world."

Natalie Arriola is an award-winning fine art photographer. Drawing from themes on psychology and philosophy, she creates surrealist imagery that is dark, numinous, and unsettling.

Her work has been featured in exhibitions at The Center for Fine Art Photography, PhotoPlace Gallery, LoosenArt, and Babylon Fine Art Gallery among others. She has been published in F-Stop Magazine, Dark Beauty X, Lenscratch, Shot’s Magazine, IMIRAGE Magazine, and International Photography Magazine.

AFTERLIFE by Norman Aragones

Norman Aragones says, "The main paradigm in my photographic art revolves around the concept of depth (having some level of meaning within the photo and thus attempting to elicit a viewer's reaction through deliberate imagery). My hope is that the viewer comes away with some feeling, idea, and/or perspective from seeing my photo(s). The techniques I use in creating photographic images are not something specific. I just try to work diligently in creating something in particular (that I had envisioned previously in my mind's eye).
