Marissa Geoffroy says, "My artistic process explores the inconstant relationship of image to object, considering human perception as a creative rather than representational process.

I start by photographing architectural structures, and then engage in a manual post-process. I print and cut apart the architectural photographs, then use them as stencils for light, photographing the resulting shadows. The final pieces include elements of the original subjects, abstracted by my repeated intervention."

Marissa Geoffroy moved from New York to the Bay Area in 2014. She received her MFA in Fine Art from California College of the Arts (CCA). Marissa is a painter and photographer. She is intrigued by spaces and architecture, and by the philosophical implications of human perception. She is also a founding member of Borderline Art Collective, a San Francisco studio and exhibition space that aims to support local artists, provide a venue for discourse, and expand art appreciation in the Bay Area.

MOBILE HOME PARK by Michael Jantzen
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

'Interventions' is a series of photomontages from Michael Jantzen that are created with images of some of his built and un-built sculptures.  These images are superimposed into various real world landscapes in order to inspire stories in the minds of the viewers, about what these things are, and how they got there.

Often images of people and/or animals are added to the photo collages (juxtaposed to the sculptures) in order to amplify the surreal nature of the stories.
Jantzen hopes that the incorporation of images of his original structures into the real world landscapes, will help to create totally original photomontages.

Michael Jantzen’s work is very well known around the world. It has been featured in thousands of articles in books, magazines, newspapers, and on the Web. His work has been shown in many galleries, and on various TV documentaries.

It has also been exhibited at the National Building Museum, the Canadian Center for Architecture, the Harvard School of Design and Architecture, the Santa Fe Institute, and at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Most of his work merges art, architecture, technology, and sustainable design into one unique experience. Extreme innovation is his goal in everything he creates. Most of this innovation has been focused on the re-invention of the built environment, and photography.

STUDY FOR A BEACH INSTALLATION by Mykel Rose
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Mykel Rose says, "Tomorrow...Our habitat, the Earth’s biosphere is rapidly changing, and as a consequence, the future of our species has never been put into question like it is today. More importantly, this existential dilemma is of our own making, a self-inflicted wound of sorts. We are the culprits in this play, the ones polluting the air with toxins, contaminating the planet with plastics.

But wait, we have the information to correct this imbalance!  Are we prepared to act and pay the price?  The Earth will survive our follies, but the question is, will we?

My new series of landscapes combined with (plastic) mannequin heads create surrealist images, which call into question the human species role in maintaining the planet's environment for future generations.

I started my artistic endeavors in Los Angeles working for a production studio servicing advertising agencies.  After three years of fine-tuning my design/ illustration techniques, I moved to Europe where I illustrated magazine stories and book covers for well-known publishers in  Germany and Switzerland. Later, I relocated to London to work on an animated feature and begin a new life chapter.

My next career stop was New York,  supervising the background department at a large animation studio in Manhatten.  Eventually, my career took me full circle, and now,  once again, I am in Los Angeles where I art direct for studios both here and abroad.  When I'm not working in animation or producing my projects in LA, I roam the world. Photography and painting are my traveling companions, which allow me to record my thoughts in a visual diary.

My new series of landscape images superimposed behind a (plastic) mannequin head calls into question the human species role in maintaining the planet for future generations.

BOOKWORM by Nadide Goksun
(Click on image for larger view)

Nadide Goksun says, "When I was a little girl, my grandmother used to guard the wound up tin toys from my father’s collection. She would open the box carefully, gently take the toy out, wind the key couple of times and then let the spectacle begin. My sister and I would sit and watch this show with wide open eyes for hours.

I became the keeper of this magical collection after my father passed away.

The photographs of the old toys take me back to those enchanted moments and represent the essence of my childhood.

I am a ceramic artist and photographer.
I studied computer programming at Bogazici University in Istanbul and Korean ceramics at Sungshin Women’s University in Seoul. My interest in photography turned into a passion as I started to study at the International Center of Photography in NYC.

I was born in Ankara, Turkey in 1967 and have lived in Istanbul, TelAviv and Seoul.I currently live in Scarsdale, New York."

BY THE SHORE by Nancy Scherl
(Click on image for larger view)

Nancy Scherl says of her series, ‘Dining Alone’, "The lone diner and the dining experience stand proxy for aspects of the human condition: alienation and solitude; the desire for human connection.

Dining, as I define it, is eating in a social context experienced by the solitary diner. The restaurant places the diner in a social context offering temporary shelter, escape from daily worries, place for nourishment, belonging, people watching and amusement and time to be alone.

The milieu is a contradiction: the lone diner is physically in a public and social space, but the protagonist is apart from it –a voyeur, or the uncomfortable object of social speculation, an introvert or an extrovert- ‘who is she and why is she alone?’. The lone diner’s body language invites interaction or repels it.

The restaurant is a theatre of emotions stimulated by food, décor, lighting, sounds, smells, spatial seating arrangements and the interplay of the personalities of the other guests, staff, or one’s self. In fact, it is a set, with a cast, props and lighting which I direct with careful editing provoking powerful emotions and tensions of the human condition: calm and peacefulness, anxiety, introspection, solitude or alienation.

Thus, the viewer’s perception of a ‘Dining Alone” scene is affected by the gaze of the lone diner and emotions and body language evoked by the subject.

Methodology:

The subjects are photographed using 35mm digital format achieving theatrical lighting, by combining strobes and tungsten lights.  The restaurant scenes are deconstructed and the crowds are stripped away focusing on lone diners or other persons to show the possibility of an interaction or contrast a dining experience. The in-camera work is key but I apply subtle degrees of postproduction adding complexity or deconstructing that which is extraneous. I started my ‘Dining Alone Series’ back in the 1990’s and shot with film. I revisited the project in recent years, have been photographing it digitally and expect to have it edited and completed in 2018.

I was introduced to photography as a child and have been intrigued by lens-based media ever since. My photographic journey provides me with a wide breadth of experiences, including studio and location lighting. I am drawn to Postmodern Pictorialism and stage my subjects accentuating aspects of the human condition.

I create hyper-real worlds, which are either ‘staged realities’ or ‘staged fantasies.’  My ‘Dining Alone’ series is an example of ‘Staged Realities’ consisting of psychologically charged portraits of lone diners. Medical Mocks’ and ‘Environmental Exaggerations ‘series are ‘Staged Fantasies’ and are artificially constructed sets and objects provoking and luring viewers into my scientifically impossible worlds. I create theatrical lighting and combine tungsten and strobe lighting.

I have also produced numerous visual stories supporting global health initiatives. I combine a pictorial and a documentary approach so that my visual presentations include both staged portraiture as well as documentary imagery.

My work has been awarded and exhibited nationally and internationally including: The Moscow International Awards, The Tokyo International Awards, the International Photography Awards, Katonah Museum of Art; Tri-State Show, The Hammond Museum, East End Arts Council, NYC4PA,  and The Houston Center for Photography.

I am based in New York City and grew up in New Rochelle, NY. I attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison where I focused on documentary and fine art photography and received an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in Photography, Video and Related Media."

PORTRAIT OF OUR LEADER by Natalia Snider
(Click on image for larger view)

Natalia Snider says, "I cannot say why I chose to cover these faces in flowers but I can say that it all felt right.

It is hidden in the process as a fish is hidden in a wave. The Inspiration starts with a face, maybe one I've seen a million times or a new one but never the less one that is now the center of my creativity.

Then the shoot is the time I explore the reactions caused by light, mood, music, and tone.  Most of the time I have no idea where this will bring me but let myself ride the high of inspiration that is continuously taking me back a forth, to and from the limits of my camera, light and energy levels. Afterward, I edit.

Closely discerning expression and detail in the pursuit of that specific one that brings all that inspiration to the forefront of my being once again. Then I play. Bringing forth randomness and chaos to collaborate with me until something stops it all and I cannot make one more move in fear of it all to be lost. That's when I know. That's when it feels right. That's when it's done."

MAKING THE SHOT by Paul Ivanushka
(Click on image for larger view)

Paul Ivanushka says, "I enjoy history. Looking back in time. Be it religion or abandoned farm equipment. Both are heavy with artifacts and meaning. The meanings are often vague and blurred from time passing. Both are rich in relics that can be tangibly photographed.

My images here are range from classical film photography to instant polaroid photos."

Paul Ivanushka (b. 1960, Highland, NY) is a fine art photography currently working with Polaroid film, and his daughters old Spectra camera. The Polaroid images are highly abused, often left to complete development in the hip pocket of his Levi 501's. The result is an image having the feel of a filmstrip melting through the reel.

After studying at Brooks Institute of Photography Paul spent most of his career in the printing industry learning and managing tone reproduction on high speed web offset presses.

Paul is a Software Business Analyst and currently resides in Inglewood, California.

Making The Shot - Hall Pool Hall, State Street, Santa Barbara, California - Gum Bichromate Tri-Tone.

Many times the presence of a photographer is unwanted. Here, great shots rely less on photographic technique and more on blending in, keeping a low profile and ultimately gaining trust. Hill Pool Hall consisted of many trips and learning the etiquette of watching pool.  Coming from a working class background helped. I was interested in showing how men from the inner city relax in between the time they punch out at work and the time they sit down at the family dinner table. I wanted to capture the beauty in the game of pool, its tools, and the urban working class enjoy each other's company.

CUBIST- JOHN by Phillip Schewe
(Click on image for larger view)

Phillip Schewe says, "By pushing beyond single exposures I aim for a kind of cubist photography.  Assembling collages from many pictures not only chunks space but provides the illusion of passing time.  This approach accentuates perspective, coloration, and texture, and encourages the viewer to see familiar things in a new way.  The original inspiration for my photography work was David Hockney’s Polaroid experiments of the early 1980s, but nowadays, I get many of my photo ideas from looking at great paintings in museums."

CIVIL BRUTALITY by Rebecca Clark
BEST SERIES
(Click on image for larger view)

Rebecca Clark says, "This series of photomontages in diptych form explore the manipulation and transformation of art historical facts into photographic fiction.  I am interested in challenging the traditional masculine gaze of the old master paintings I photograph by dissecting the paintings into small parts and liberating the pieces from their original context.  The photographic artifacts can then be re-interpreted, distorted and manipulated to produce alternative narratives.

I use the diptych format to explore the shifting nature of memory and how interpretation of information is altered by gender, context and time.  The diptych as a whole offers a narrative that questions and subverts the facts of the original image, while each part a tells a different version of that newly constructed narrative.

I construct my photomontages so they that initially appear to be historic paintings and provoke the viewer to question the medium and veracity of the image.  My intention is to create an image that wavers between dualities: painting and photograph, part and whole, reality and fiction, past and present, male and female. Within the open-ended narratives of the pseudo historic images, I hope the viewer recognizes contemporary themes about conflict, anxiety, and identity."

Rebecca Clark is a Professor of Art at the Community College of Rhode Island where she teaches photography.  She studied art history at Oberlin College where she earned her BA and holds a MFA in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design.  Rebecca’s work has always involved some form of alternative process or manipulation of media and the integration of appropriated imagery.

Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the country, most recently solo shows at the Griffin Museum of Photography and the Davis Orton Gallery and group shows at Panopticon Gallery, Houston Center for Photography and the Center for Fine Art Photography.  In 2016 she was a Critical Mass finalist. Rebecca lives with her family in eastern Connecticut.
