THE 'I-A CALL FOR SELF-PORTRAITURE'- Ellen Friedlander > EXHIBITION #2
EXHIBITION #2
SELF PORTRAIT ONE by Ellen Frisbie
Ellen Frisbie says, "These self portraits are of a person emerging after two years in a cocoon of deep grief from losing a best friend, soul mate, business partner, husband. A beloved partner who went through a personality change due to cancer and became an angry stranger before passing away. After simmering in the pain of that loss a deep, vast and wide awareness of life’s important truths becomes more clear.
Picking up a camera at some point on the grief journey brought me back to life. Spending time outside even in freezing temperatures trying to capture light and texture on my subjects distracted me from the trauma and took me into a realm where I could escape thinking about the loss."

MY SELF SEEN THROUGH ANOTHER by Heather Williamson
Heather Williamson says, "My work allows me to feel something other than me yet empowers me, seeing all that is me in everything. It delivers me from bondage, offering nothing. When I'm behind my work, no one knows the pain in my mind, but this pain gives way to understanding. When I no longer exist, I feel certain, completely grounded in who I am. This is the practice of myself—the process of standing."
Heather Williamson is a multifaceted artist based in the CA high desert whose practice includes photography, filmmaking, writing, installation, music, and sound. Her work (and her) are known for provoking thought and feeling. Invoking harmony. She studies under Jokai Blackwell Sensei.

SELF 2 by Ian Wright
HONORABLE MENTION
HONORABLE MENTION
“He going feel like a fool and there don't be no man yet born who can deal with feeling like a damn fool.”
Caryl Phillips, The Final Passage
Ian Wright says, "Men don’t “do” self portraits. It just is that way.The awareness of one's maleness is so tied up in an issue of couldn't-care-lessness and a refusal to lower our guards and admit that we are self aware, that we are fragile and that we do care.
There is a great history of women using their own bodies in photographs to tell their inner stories with an openness and vulnerability that often makes men uncomfortable.
Their inability of the male to open up and expose himself may just be based on insecurity and in maybe paying too much attention to what other's think. Is it perhaps because women expect other women to empathise with their self portraits but men expect other men to judge them in theirs? I don't know.
In the many workshops and exhibitions I have attended, I rarely see men take this tougher route of self expression and when they do dip their toe in the water it often simply further perpetuates the stereotypical image of manliness that we have long been exposed to through populare media and culture.
I took the plunge, with the encouragement of great teachers such as Jennifer McClure, Joanne Duggan, Lori Vrba and Aline Smithson, to change how other's may view me and perhaps more importantly, how I view myself. The fact that these teachers were all women is not coincidental, thank you to them all for making me a better man.
I am an LA based photographer, originally from Scotland and I love the world, warts and all."

CONFLICTED by Jacqueline Rupp
Jacque Rupp says, “When I became a young widow, I struggled with the conflict and guilt. I was grieving the loss of my own identity along with the loss of my husband. I felt numb, raw and exposed then suddenly felt very sexual and alive. Anything was possible. These in-congruencies were confusing. My wants and needs had been neglected during his long illness. And, I was ashamed of my new desires.
Shortly after he died, I bought a red purse, which sat on my dresser for years. I knew I needed to have it, but I did not know why. I never used it. I see now it was a reminder of what I needed in my life as a woman; something feminine, frivolous, and out of character. It gave me permission to fantasize about who I could become during this transition.
My mother had become a widow at a similar age. Women of that generation were expected to shut down, to keep their desires hidden. Divorced women could remarry, but widows were expected to stay devoted to their husbands. This was not the kind of life I wanted to live. I learned grieving and living can coexist. I still feel guilt at times, but I can talk about it now and accept that it is ok.”
Jacque Rupp is a documentary and fine art photographer based in the San Francisco Bay area. She uses the camera to learn about herself and the world.
She was an executive in Silicon Valley recruiting top talent for years before dedicating herself to photography. She holds degrees from SUNY and Santa Clara University and has studied photography at Stanford University, Santa Fe Workshops, Maine Media and The Los Angeles Center for Photography. She has a lifetime interest in the moving image and is on the advisory board for UNAFF (United Nations Associated Film Festival), a documentary film festival at Stanford University.
She is also on the board of the Weston Collective in Carmel. And, an active volunteer at the historic Center for Photographic Arts in Carmel.
She has exhibited at the Center for Photographic Arts in Carmel, Praxis Photo Arts Center, The Los Angeles Center of Photography, Foothill College and Art Venture Gallery in Menlo Park and numerous online venues.
Jacque received Merit Awards in the 2020 and 2021 All About Photo competitions. She was a Spotlight winner in the 2022 Black and White Magazine competition. And she received an Honorable Mention in the 17th Julia Margaret Cameron submission.

GHOST SELF PORTRAIT by Jane Gottlieb
Jane Gottlieb says, "I have been expressing my joy of art with paint, shapes and colors since I was very young.
I began as a painter, evolved into a photographer, and eventually began painting on individual photographic prints over thirty years ago. I hand painted vivid colors on my Cibachrome prints, creating a wonderful new reality.
Now I scan my one-of-a-kind hand-painted prints & collection of photos taken over a lifetime all around the world andI paint, collage and enhance them with Photoshop.
Color is luscious to me. It’s a luxury to be able to fill my life with color. Color is energy; it evokes emotion and feelings. It’s the other side of intellectual, and it makes you feel good -it really does pick you up, and it makes you smile.
My art has been exhibited worldwide in many solo exhibitions: Butler Institute of American Art; Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard, CA; Laguna Art Museum. CA; Petersen Automotive Museum, LA, CA; UCSB Art, Design & Architecture Museum, MAD Art Gallery, Milan, Italy, LA County Museum of Natural History, CA; Monterey Museum of Art, CA; Louis Stern Gallery, West Hollywood, CA; Wall Space Gallery, Santa Barbara, CA; Nancy Hoffman Gallery, New York City; L’Image Gallery, Rome, Italy, Colorinda Gallery, Lisbon. Portugal.
I have been included in countless group exhibits over the last 30 years, and collected by museums, foundations, corporations and individuals worldwide.
Many magazine articles, magazine and book covers, two museum exhibition catalogues and two books have been published of my art, Garden Tales and Car Tales.
I am proud to announce that I have just installed over 150 large art works in eight different buildings at UCLA and UCSB. Just installed a commission for the UCSB Library that is 15’x15’!"

DAY-14,800 by Johnny Brian
Johnny Brian says, "Most of my images were taken during the pandemic lockdown. I originally started taking images because I let me hair grow out. I did not get a hair cut for more than 400 days because I was terrified about going outside the house. I titled the images based on how long it had been since I had a hair cut. 411 days, 22 hours, and 30 minutes I had my first and only haircut of the pandemic. The title of my project is “Me and My Hair, Selfies During the Pandemic”.
Johnny Brian spent his early life in insular southern Arkansas. He attended college and medical school in Arkansas, and after completing a residency in anesthesia, he moved to Baltimore for research training at Johns Hopkins.
In the early 90’s he moved to Iowa, where he resides today. Johnny Brian worked in or directed chemical and biological research laboratories for decades. His research experience allows him a good understanding of process control important in black and white film photography and darkroom silver gelatin printing. He performs formal film and developer tests, creating film curves which allow finer control over film exposure, development and printing.
Career Highlights:
In 2017, his entry, a hand made silver gelatin print, into the Iowa Arts Council Agriculture Art Exhibit was awarded an honorable mention. In 2021 Johnny Brian had a print accepted for exhibit at the Cedar Rapids The Derecho Remembrance Exhibit. In 2021 one of Johnny Brian’s prints, Dinner Time, was accepted for inclusion in the October 2021 edition of the Annals of Iowa.

SECOND PLACE
SECOND PLACE
Karen Crouse says, "I have been merging self portraits with images of nature. It started as a series using imagery of stars and space, encapsulating the Carl Sagan quote "we are all star stuff"
“The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.”
Then the concept expanded into our relationships with all things in nature: trees, fire, water. We are all star stuff, we will all end as star stuff as we are all interconnected. "We are a way for the universe to know itself.”
Karen Crouse is a photographer based near Baltimore, MD. Beginning with a darkroom printing class when she was 8, Karen continued her love of film developing and printing throughout high school and college, earning her BFA in Photography from Shepherd University.
Since Karen has recently returned to photography, she has been in multiple group exhibits including ArtDoc Magazine and F-Stop Magazine online exhibits.
