HONORABLE MENTION

Prescott Moore Lassman says, “I am a photographer based in Washington, D.C. focusing mainly on black-and-white photography — somewhere between street and documentary with a strong dose of minimalism for good measure.  My subject matter and interests are eclectic, but my approach is mostly intuitive. I search for images that resonate, for moments of synchronicity in everyday life. Because this approach relies on unconscious triggers, my photographs are often richly symbolic, though their meaning is not immediately clear (at least not to me). For me, this is the essence of photography: capturing an image that resonates and then, over the course of months or years, figuring out why.

The photographs submitted for Cycle of Life represent childhood, motherhood, and the later years of a woman’s life when child-rearing is over. All of these stages of life have their joys and their struggles. These photographs seek to represent both.”

Stephanie Sydney/Caliente Cafe

Stephanie Sydney is a London-born artist who currently resides in Venice, California. While she was a painter from a very young age, she picked up a camera to capture what she saw on the streets around her.

She carries a camera wherever she goes and collects images under a variety of subjects, including: urban decay, construction, nature, streets-people and places, urban still lifes, reflections, abstractions, and  architecture. She also started exploring multiple exposures in camera, and with digital technology came new explorations of the transformative potential of imagery: painting with photographs.

She works in several media including painting, mixed media, assemblage, installation, photography, and digital collages.

Her work is in several collections including Banque BNP Paribas and Morgan Stanley in New York.

She has had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Art and History (MOAH:Cedar), Brand Library Art Gallery; Crafton Hills College Art Gallery, Gallery 825, California; and Villa di Donato in Naples, Italy. Tom Chambers/Now Now
HONORABLE MENTION

Tom Chambers says of his series, “Tales of Heroines”, raised in a family alongside four brothers and the absence of sisters, my eyes were opened by my daughter’s growing up experiences from a girl to a teenager to a young woman.

As a result, I am in awe of determined young women like my daughter who meet and negotiate both small daily hurdles and major life challenges. Their determination, empathy, and ingenuity in navigating a complex world make them heroines in my eyes.

My photographic series Tales of Heroinesis a collection of stories about the lives of young women told through portraits. The subjects squarely face the viewer and the images employ a consistent format with a low horizon line, vertical orientation, and arched framing which invites the viewer into the story. Using magic realism, the power of storytelling emanates from the details in the photomontages. The stories are intentionally provocative enticing the viewer to engage with questions about the Tales of Heroines.”

Photographer Tom Chambers was raised in the Amish farm country ofLancaster, Pennsylvania. Tom completed a B.F.A. in 1985 from The Ringling College of Art and Design, Sarasota, Florida, majoring in graphic design with an emphasis in photography. Since 1998 Tom has exhibited photomontage images from twelve photographic series both nationally and internationally in twenty five solo exhibitions and over seventy group exhibitions and art fairs.
