CRUTCHES by Alysia Macaulay
FIRST PLACE WINNER
(Click on image for larger view)

Alysia Macaulay says of her work, "Intrigued by the voyeuristic and often unsettling ambiance light creates at night, I began this series as an exploration of night light and how it affects our perception of what an image represents.

I have focused on the power and mystique this light creates within the context of my family.

Taking an active role in each image, the light source is not only an integral part of the story, in many instances it is the subject itself.

The two opposing elements in this body of work, what the light reveals and what the absence of light conceals, are created by a single source, night light."

Alysia Macaulay is a fine art photographer living in Boston, Massachusetts.

Inspired by the power of an image, and the story it can tell, her photographs depict the subtle, poignant moments that occur within her family life, particularly in times of great challenge.

Her work has appeared in numerous group shows, as well as, solo exhibitions at Umbrella Arts Gallery in New York City and The Griffin Museum of Photography in Boston.

Alysia is represented by 555 Gallery in Boston.

SHADOW OF LIGHT by Amir Lavon
(Click on image for larger view)

Amir Lavon says of this work, "The way down to the village is a series that I have been filming for a while in order to visually conveying the feelings behind the frames.

The challenge here is how to create the same narrative, that latent and magical emotion that exists only in your soul for the soul of the beholder, even for that fragile second of light, of nature and other life, of peace and tranquility within the chaos of the Land of Israel.

One of the thoughts that came to me during the filming is how can we prove what is almost nonexistent, how do we preserve the remnants of the past? How to create a stop of the big city in favor of a photothermatic moment that appeals to emotion and emphasizes the visuals of the hidden past, of the moshav and the kibbutz, from which only fragments and photographic fragments remain.

During the filming I thought about what I was trying to photograph, the process or what was left of it, and I still do not have a clear answer to this question, perhaps the pictures will be able to answer this question.

The series deals with nature and life, but also tries to tell the story of the place or what is left of it, a low hill covered with dry thorns, and clearly a kind of wire, which a human hand once laid. The excitement of the smooth paved road, arranged in direct strips that produce a symmetrical symmetry with modern electricity but also with nature, gives way to the cutting point, to the scar that the paved road has left in the earth itself, and above all in what was previously the place, where someone lived.

The road leading down to the village is a series dealing with the presence of the past in the present, what remains and what remains, what was and will be and where we are going.

This is a series that is my refuge; perhaps the last of the almost impossible life here in the Land of Israel, the only place that was once someone's home and now serves as the only escape I know to feel alive, the only place I feel.

The irony of what I seek, find, exit, enter, smell, feel, see, perceive, perceive, tap, photograph, and document the place because it is no longer exists for the benefit of something, I am not sure is still within me or soon will be extinct."

A 36 year old street and documentary photographer, based in Afula, Israel, Amir Lavon is also an English and photography teacher for special aids students and student at high risk community in the education system.

He earned his P.E Degree in photography and new media in PCK Photo center College, studied B/w photography and printing from the creative photography school, TLV and culture photography in National geographic Israel.

CHAIR by Arlene Stanger
(Click on image for larger view)

Arlene Stanger says of her work, "I am originally from Michigan and am presently a retired microbiologist living in Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin.

My interest in photography began many years ago when I took a darkroom class developing black and white photos while living in Monterey, California.

I am largely self taught and have taken some independent photography classes at a junior college in Illinois as well as photography classes at the Peninsula Art School in Fish Creek, WI.

I started out with a 35 mm SLR film camera and then switched to digital when that became available.  With digital cameras becoming increasingly more complex, it was a refreshing experience when I was introduced to the Holga camera (a plastic, no frills 120 mm film camera made in China) in a course I took.

I love the unpredictability of the resulting image and am always excited to see the end result.

After recently taking classes in using the iPhone, I have added that to my equipment repertoire for capturing images as well. The photography apps available are amazing in their creative and editing.  Regardless of the equipment I use, I am continually searching for interesting shapes, textures and light qualities that I hope will elicit an emotional response from those viewing my images.

My images have been juried into galleries in Wisconsin, Oregon, California, New York, Massachusetts and Texas.  I received the Director’s Award at A Smith Gallery in Johnson City, TX in 2014; 2nd place at the 53rd Annual Hardy Gallery Exhibit in Ephraim, WI in 2015; and a Special Merit Award at the 41st Annual Juried Exhibit at the Miller Art Museum in Sturgeon Bay, WI in 2016.

I have received nominations and an honorable mention in the 9th and 10th Annual International Black & White Spider Awards.

Most recently I have been published in Black & White magazine’s 2016 & 2017 photo contest Special Issues and, as the winner in the Nature/Flower category of the 7th Edition of the Julia Margaret Cameron Award for women photographers and finalist in the Fine Art and Landscape categories of the 8th Edition of the JMCA, three of my images were exhibited at the 4th Edition of the International Biennial of Fine Art and Documentary Photography in Berlin, Germany in 2016.

I’m currently represented by Woodwalk Gallery in Egg Harbor, WI."

SHADES OF SUNRISE by Bailey Dale
(Click on image for larger view)

Bailey Dale say of this series, '7 Shades of Yellow' is a documentation of my hometown, Amarillo, TX.

No longer a resident of Amarillo, I have continuously returned to reevaluate the cultural and spiritual ideologies that were imposed upon me as a young child who was raised in the heart of the “Bible Belt.”

Through this project, I study my native home from a now outsider’s perspective, making images that reflect my shift in personal views as I have evolved as a person and distanced myself from the area.

Each image in this series serves as a visual representation of my detachment from the space while also incorporating subjects that trace back to my childhood.

Each image was shot using a 4x5 view camera as an act to mimic the sense of stillness and abandonment that exists in the areas of Amarillo that were most prevalent to me as an adolescent. The landscape photographs study the physical space, while the still lives portray my personal view of Amarillo and the common themes that surround it."

Bailey Dale’s work focuses on documenting her hometown of Amarillo, Texas.

This project, titled 7 Shades of Yellow, looks at the areas of the Panhandle that have remained stagnant over the years, while also studying the shifts in personal ideology that occurred after distancing herself from the town.

She was born in Amarillo, Texas in 1993 where her interest in photography began in early high school.

This interest grew while working as an assistant for video artist Michael Rowley. After attending one year at Amarillo College in 2012, Bailey moved to Denton, Texas to complete her BFA in photography at the University of North Texas.

In January of 2016, she accepted an internship with Dallas editorial photographer Justin Clemons that she completed upon graduation that May.

During the summer of 2016, she worked as the studio coordinator for the summer season at Maine Media Workshops + College, where she assisted several renowned photographers, including Joyce Tenneson, Arlene Collins, and Richard Tuschman.

After spending a year working as a studio manager for Justin Clemons in Dallas, she spent the summer of 2017 working as a course coordinator at Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. Now based in Los Angeles, CA, Bailey is currently continuing 7 Shades of Yellow and exploring other projects. Her work has been featured at The Center for Fine Art Photography, Black Box Gallery, Genome Magazine, Aint-Bad, and F-Stop Magazine.

BRIGHT RED by Bego Montesinos
(Click on image for larger view)

Bego Montesinos says of her work, "These photographs were taken both in Japan and Hong Kong in 2015 and 2016, respectively, and try to show the visual humbleness of a unique country such as Japan and the urban wonders of a vibrant and colorful HK.

They are to truly inspire my soul every time I close my eyes and incessantly visualize them in my dreams: magic places which are engraved in my heart for good; they are to embrace my soul and make me smile out of pure joy and love. Images whose colors are to be part of my skin so as to make it shine bright.

Those aforesaid images are to be a part of me and aspire to draw a smile in everyone’s hearts: the path to pure joy where our cravings for traveling and exploring our precious planet might be found and join for good.

They are really meaningful to me since they are to describe exactly how I felt in those said places in different times but conversely, being able to inspire at many levels equally. Spiritually evoking shots that are to embrace my inner being any time I just stop and stare at them so as to close my eyes and visualize them incessantly, swimming in pure emotional pleasure. Breathlessly being a part of me as of today."

Montesinos is an English teacher who was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, and who really enjoys what she does, that is, getting to inspire others and motivate them to be better and have a precious smile at all times.

She considers herself to be lucky enough to teach and learn on the process... ...Education is a unique tool.

She believes in love and following her heart no matter what. She sees empathy as the most powerful weapon ever since it can change the world.

She loves to travel as traveling is to be her passion: it is what defines her as a person. She also loves to read and write.

She takes photographs as she walks this life through mysterious paths.

She does believe in humans and their ability to draw picturesque landscapes where others just see a deep void. The future is in us...

GOLDEN AFTERNOON CANAIMA by Carla Tabora
(Click on image for larger view)

Carla Tabora says, "For 'Certain Places', I’ve chosen three images that represent a pilgrimage to places that are mystically connected to my life.
When I left Venezuela, I thought I could return anytime to refill my soul with its nature, that is a part of my childhood and my growing as an artist.

Twenty five Years have passed and I could only revisit some places once more. Because of lack of security in Venezuela some of my childhood places are impossible to visit now.

These three images are from South of Venezuela, La Gran Sabana, a sacred place for me"

Carla Tabora, an artist whose life has been spent in a variety of lands and languages, has produced a body of work which comes across as a dialogue between different parts of the world.

Through photography and painting she has built up a narrative of subtlety, rhythm and luminosity, akin to that of a poem. The central metaphor of that poem is the tree in its representation of life. Words reverberate round this multilingual, mestizo text, echoing through the naturalness of all these solidly structured images.

AND TIDES BEAT THROUGH YOUR SLEEP by Christiana Caro
(Click on image for larger view)

Christiana Caro says of her work, "My research combines elements of perception, collection, folk culture, and place.

My work examines discrete sites and acts of preservation, including heritage museums that display objects curated by residents.

The photographs I make are informed by mythological riffs generated on isolated topographies and the experiential practice of seeking and finding them.

These projects have taken me to locations in the US and abroad. Each body is tailored to idiosyncrasies of locale while uniformly addressing landscape, mapping, cosmos, environment, and the slippages between memory and interpretation.

In departing from straight documents, narrative symbols, or archival objects, my images explore all three – those moments where they come together, and fall apart again.

The images submitted here are from a series, The World Has Turned, shot on Orcas Island, WA and exhibited at the BABEL Gallery in Trondheim, Norway in 2016. They investigate a landscape that is equal parts subterranean and interstellar."

Born in Washington, DC, Caro earned her BFA in photography from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and her MFA from the University of Arizona, Tucson.

She has participated in a number of artist-in-residency programs, lectures, and exhibitions in the US and abroad.

From 2011-12, Caro received a Fulbright Fellowship for research in Slovakia, during which time she also founded and curated Clutch Gallery, a pop-up exhibition space that showcased the work of Slovak and US artists.

In 2015 she co-founded a similar project for local artists in Norfolk, VA - Range Gallery.

Caro has taught photography and art history at Old Dominion University, the University of Arizona, the Florence University of the Arts, the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, the Governor's School for the Arts, and served as a visiting Fulbright artist at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Bratislava.

She currently lives in Seattle, where she maintains a studio practice and works with the Artists and Machine Intelligence program at Google.

POST IDEALISM by Daniel Sullivan
(Click on image for larger view)

Daniel Sullivan says of his work, "These images are from the “Phosphene Series” of digital photographs, and make it a goal to beautify questionable events, or imply a malevolence behind an idyllic facade.

They symbolically test the viewers’ abilities to simultaneously look at and through an image, to detect the actual form and perhaps intent - underlying the depictions we are exposed to."

Artist Daniel Sullivan is a founding partner/owner at Oliver Street Studios and was co-founding Director of AREA 405 gallery.

Born in Columbus, Ohio; he received his BFA in painting from The Ohio State University, where he received numerous honors and awards - including the Hoyt L. Sherman Memorial Scholarship.

He received his MFA, also in painting, from The University of Maryland, College Park - graduating with a 4.0 GPA.

Daniel currently lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland.

Daniel has a thirty-year exhibition history, showing regionally, nationally and internationally.

Exhibition venues have included solo and group shows at The Columbus Museum of Art, The Delaware Museum of Art, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, The Muscarelle Museum of Art, Maryland Art Place, School 33 Art Center, Walker Arts Center, Baumgartner Gallery, Acme Art Company, Atlantic Center for the Arts and many others. He has also been awarded grants from both the NEA and the Maryland State Arts Council, as well as being a national finalist for the Richard C. Diebenkorn Memorial Teaching Fellowship at The San Francisco Art Institute.

His work for many years, was an open-ended dialogue with the viewer, deconstructing scientific metrics and the methodologies of modernism.

This subject and the disassembly of conventions, has recently been supplanted by a thorough investigation of historic and clandestine conspiracies.

The control of information and the fracturing of an individual's psyche, are equally considered and taking the form of modernist standards. A quest for an aesthetic truth in a world where truth is selective and redacted.

AT HOME by Ellen Mahaffy
(Click on image for larger view)

Ellen Mahaffy says of her work, 'Walk Among the Spirits', Once I encountered Tahoe’s diverse environment, I found that the images around me expressed their own ideas, that all I had to do was be attentive and receptive to them. When I looked carefully, I found that often the iconic shapes of the natural landscape transformed themselves into something before my eyes, and this surreality found in nature began to appear in my photographs.

Many of my images play with the relative sizes of the components through the angle and composition of the frame, while others explore changes in a scene over time. Rather than reiterating the classic “big picture” view of the west, I focused on the smaller details of the landscape, the details that revealed themselves to be more than what a viewer might see at first glance."

Ellen Mahaffy originated in a small town south of Rochester, New York, known as Lima. A high school art elective led to her lifelong commitment to photography.

After her high school photography teacher convinced her that going to college for art would suit her more than computer science, she made her way to Baltimore, Maryland, where she earned a BFA in photography from the Maryland Institute College of Art.

After returning to Rochester, she attained a MFA from the College at Brockport and Visual Studies Workshop. Her multimedia project, Nothing Was Ever Said, unearthed familial secrets. Her study of queer theory inspired her to produce portraits that explore sexuality.

Currently, she is an associate professor in the department of communication and journalism at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire,  where she teaches courses in visual communication. She is also the co-founder and an executive director of the Eau Queer Film Festival (2010–present).
