Amina AmXn says, "I am. . . .
I am a photographer, quilter, painter, mosaic-artist, writer, and baker. As an artist, my goal is to make political and thought-provoking social justice art, informed by the context of being a Black WomXn in America and through the context of nature. Thus, it is my responsibility to accurately depict nature, culture, authenticity, and representations of Blackness in the African Diaspora. My goal is to highlight the richness, vibrancy, beauty, joy, resiliency, and power of People of African Descent and nature.

HOMOMETABOLOUS OBJECTS ISOLATION by Anne Eder
(Click on image for larger view)

Anne Eder says, "Holometabolous insects go through a process of complete metamorphosis consisting of transformation from egg through larva, pupa, and finally, adult.

This process can be complicated and may involve the dissolving of all skeletal structure and the emergence of an adult that is very different in form. I often work with semiotically charged content in my work such as teeth, bones, or monsters, and utilize a scaffolding of mythology, folklore, or fairy tales.

In the creation of Holometabolous Objects I draw on the many fantastical shapes that insects manufacture in their cocoon and chrysalis phases. These become symbols of change, transformation, and growth. I found myself particularly drawn to this during the isolation of the pandemic. When the time comes to emerge, what will we have become?

Many of my photographs are made using large sculptural work that functions as public art; afterward, I use these components in my images. These are generally handmade prints using historic or alternative processes such as gum bichromate or platinum/ palladium. The sculptures used in this series were exhibited in downtown Boston’s Riverway Park and traveled to several locations in New England. All these photographs were printed in palladium on 100% cotton Hahnemühle Platinum Rag."

Anne Eder is an interdisciplinary artist working in photography, sculpture, and installation. She teaches Interdisciplinary and experimental art at Harvard University and a variety of historic and alternative photographic processes at Penumbra Foundation in NYC. She also teaches Color Methods at Princeton University with Deana Lawson.  She has been internationally exhibited, awarded, and published, and currently lives in Boston writing fairy tales and catering to her fabulous chihuahua, The Brain.

Career Highlights/ most recent: Eder says, "During these pandemic years I have been happiest when teaching, attempting to provide community and a framework for creativity for my students of all ages during this difficult time. It has also been a time of great personal growth as I dove deep into research and explored new ideas, materials, and workflows.

Some highlights of the past two years were the wonderful publications I was featured in including The Journal of Grievances: Fool’s Paradise, Viewpoint Colour with a lovely solo spread, Analog Forever Magazine, chosen in their Top 50 analog artists for 2020, The Hand Magazine, and Analog Explorations, which featured my documentary series on Plum Island printed using the historic salted paper process and seawater from the site. I was also grateful to have received another Julia Margaret Cameron Award, for my inclusion in currently running shows In Conversation with The Land at The Center for Fine Art Photography, Pivot at Harvard Ceramics Program, and Light Sensitive 2021, opening soon at Art Intersection."

SERIOUS CONTEMPLATIONS by Barbara Hayden
(Click on image for larger view)

Barbara Hayden says, "I first learned photography from my Dad. Who first learned photography in the US Army Signal Corp, WWII.

Dad's studios and darkrooms were my classrooms and playground for infinite photo magic.

The School of Visual Arts (NYC 1968-1971) provided my formal education.
I am a Street-Shooting-Purist, no posing, natural light only. I aim to catch the quick moments barely noticed.

Having been widowed twice, at 25 and 34 years old, my passion and involvement with photography was set aside while my healing and regrouping led me to the Los Angeles Deaf Community, followed by a 30-year career in primary education.

When technology made photography possible without a darkroom, I was ready to dive back in.

I ultimately became computer teacher, technology coordinator and arts supervisor at the inner-city elementary during my three decades.

(I especially enjoy the Rose Bowl Swap Meet, Grand Central Market/DTLA, and anywhere NYC.

Carol Horigan says, "As a lifelong traveler, I have journeyed from Tibet to the Persian Gulf, from Argentina to Alaska, joyfully immersing myself in many cultures.

This past year however, my excursions have been close to home and primarily inner journeys. More than ever, I value meditative stillness and genuinely take the time to see the intricate beauties of nature surrounding me.  What lies ahead for me now that I have stepped back from the frenetic pace of our modern world?  I embrace the quiet splendor of connecting with nature here at home and am happy to be here."

Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it.  – Confucius

Carol Horigan is a photographer based in Santa Fe, NM.  Before turning to photography, she had a successful college career teaching both studio art and art history.

In bringing personality into her images, post production is as vital a part of the creative process as the camera work, combining both historic approaches and contemporary tools. With her MFA in printmaking and influence of art history, her photographs are a reflection on the poetic side of visible reality, often infusing the unusual or unexpected into the ordinary.

Her work has been shown worldwide, including Beijing, Barcelona and Berlin.  She was awarded 2nd place at a previous LA Photo Curator, Serenity, juried by Wendi Schneider, for her image THE SHAPE OF FLIGHT: STRUCTURE OF GRACE, https://www.laphotocurator.com/serenity-curator-wendi-schneider/second-place-carol-horigan-structure-of-grace----/1

OTHER FORESTS RAIN by Charlotte Schmid-Maybach

Charlotte Schmid-Maybach says, "With this new body of work, I engage with landscape using an interdisciplinary approach combining photography, textile and assemblage. I use from one to multiple photographs and add thread, maps, buttons and iridescent paint. I sew over and into my photographs until the sewn threads integrate fully with the photographic images to create  a new object: phototapestries.

I draw my inspiration from nature, especially the forest and water. Some of my earliest memories are of hiking in the forest and feeling in awe of the giant trees above me. My background as a photojournalist and archaeological photographer also inform my artwork.

I begin by making archival pigment prints on kozo paper which I paint with a thin layer of acrylic medium to protect it from UV light and the sewing process. Then I begin to sew with various types of thread, mostly metallic thread.

Thread changes the photographs into something more dimensional and textural. They feel like fabric. The threads blur the line between what’s real in the photograph and what’s beyond the picture or imagined. The metallic threads in the forest pieces evoke fairy tales and the history of the forest with no humans present.

When a piece is almost finished I sew layers of thin tengu paper around the edges as a border. The sewing process for me is about making something interesting out of the ordinary, and in doing so elevating the idea of sewing as women’s work to that of a higher art form. I like to think of my work as creating artifacts of tomorrow."

Charlotte Schmid-Maybach is a photographer and mixed media artist based in Los Angeles. Originally from San Francisco, she earned her BA from UC Berkeley in South Asian civilization and MA in photojournalism from the University of Missouri in Columbia. Her background as an archaeological photographer in Pakistan and fifteen years as a newspaper photojournalist have informed her artwork. Charlotte started studying with artist Tom Wudl in Los Angeles in 2016 and had a solo exhibition of her phototapestries at the Lois Lambert Gallery in 2020. She was a recipient of the Photolucida Critical Mass Top 50 award in 2021. Her work has been shown at the Center for Photographic Art, the Colburn School of Music, the Brand Gallery and A. Smith Gallery, the Neutra Institute Museum and other galleries, and her work is held in private collections in the U.S.

WATER MEDALLION UNKNOWING by Chel Delaney
(Click on image for larger view)

Chel Delaney says, “The "Water Medallions" series, created from images taken when looking into a well of water, with its disruptive surfaces and unclear depths, reflect "What Lies Ahead" –  a time of uncertainty.

Usually, the well with its life-giving and life-sustaining waters is a clear sign of good fortune. And, medallions are most often commemorative mementos, marking celebratory occasions.

However, living in the Anthropocene Epoch and with news headlines blaring that the Covid-19 Delta variant is causing increasing illnesses and deaths, the future looks uncertain when gazing into the prophetic waters of today's world.

My ongoing water medallions series commemorates and reflects our time of unknowing, when the road to the future is rocky and clouded and the waters are muddied. Questions about vaccine efficacy, masking vs. no masks, availability of hospital beds, our children's future and our own viability and longevity may go unspoken during this era, but they surely weigh heavily on our psyches.”

Chel Delaney is a multidisciplinary artist and writer, based in San Antonio, Texas. She is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and has studied photography at the International Center for Photography, The Southwest School of Arts. Her photography art practice has grown out of her work as a print reporter and editor for newspapers and magazines.

Career Highlights-

Chel Delaney's images are in the show, "Colors 21," at the Southeast Center for Photography in Greenville, S.C., and a collaborative video work with Philadelphia sculptor Darla Jackson is in "The Earth is Blue" exhibit, the first online exhibition at The Alternative Art School.

Christos Palios says of his series, (Project Sarakiniko), "Unrelenting winds and formidable waves contour this volcanic silvery-white landscape into brilliant lunar-like surfaces. Sharp cliffs, caves and valleys, occupants on amorphous alien terrain—I find myself enraptured and mesmerized. Sarakiniko feels like a notable nexus, a collective liminal ground of enchantment on the island of Milos. Among a diversity of visitors immersed in mutual awe, I momentarily disentangle from life’s bustle. Each explorer summarily comprises the endless dream-like dynamism experienced here. This majestic place rekindled fond moments of wonder and discovery.

I was raised as a first-generation Greek-American, a son of immigrants. These two distinct and fascinating cultures forged my personal perspectives. Socioeconomics, cultural diversity, history, and architecture fuel my intellectual and emotional intrigue. As strong symbolic sparks, these arenas inform my creative process and evolution. My long-term photographic work is rooted in research and probes themes of identity, connection, nostalgia, and isolation. My springboard originates in the visual arts with a track in design and animation, consummated by a BFA (suma cum laude) from the University of Maryland. For as long as I can recall, photography’s remarkable capacity to communicate ideas and narratives inspire me to embody insight and intent within the frame. I have pursued my fine art full-time since 2006."

QUEEN OF THE WORLD by Christos Palios
(Click on image for larger view)

Cindy Konits says, "Project “This Room Will Survive Me”, "Since the inception of the Covid 19 pandemic I have been photographing myself in direct light and long exposures with an obsolete instant camera and expired film.

I have been waiting for long yellow and red rays of seasonal sun in areas by windows and open doorways. I have sought light and shadows in passages between rooms of my house and outdoors, in nature and abandoned dwellings. In my imposed isolation I embarked on the journey to recreate internal self-reflective space.

The architecture of home, integral to the sense of self through time, resonates deeply with the relationships, emotions and words spoken in it over time. As a child I embodied the known architecture of home for my first venture out into the world. In the creation of these photographs, I prepare myself to emerge again. I posture in a meditative state along room contours where light floods my body and I count, often 60 seconds of an estimated exposure, finding comfort in this process unifying mind and body in space and light.

In this series I move through new spaces of rooms and the natural environment in the visual context and texture of introspection. I recognize, anticipate, and utilize a light beam before it vanishes, imagining the rhythmic flow of life between home and away sustaining itself into the unknown. The photographic medium, so uniquely in touch with the experience of loss, allows me to see myself continually evolving, a ghost of previous selves."

Cindy Konits’ lens-based projects explore complexities of family history and memory in the face of evolving technologies. With a BA in Psychology and Education and Urban Planning masters degree, her first experiments with photography generated solo documentary photography shows with National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for Humanities grants to mount and travel the exhibitions “The Best Woman For the Job”, and “Now I See Kiev in My Dreams”, respectively.

She was awarded a full merit scholarship to the Maryland Institute College of Art Photography and Digital Media MFA program, after which she became adjunct Associate Professor at Stevenson University, Maryland, teaching Photography and Video Art. In 2011 Konits began a full-time studio practice.

Cindy lives and works in Baltimore and New York City and is represented by The Commotion Virtual Salon, Vancouver BC.

Career Highlights 2020/2021

In 2021 Konits won a solo exhibition for “This Room Will Survive Me” at the PH21 Gallery in Budapest Hungary. Work from this project won first prize in The Photo Review Competition and also two Julia Cameron Award categories and a Pollux Award category (2021/ 2020).

Dan Kaufman says, "Silence is so accurate," Mark Rothko said, fearing that words would paralyze the viewer's mind and imagination.

The difficulty is that words carry a prejudice: the viewer's judgement.
Silence is unambiguous, so accurate in its clarity:
SILENCE IS EMPHATIC!"

Dan was born the son of an artist, and like many passionate artists (and photographers) began his love affair at an early age: working a paper route so he could buy a camera…his first exposure to a darkroom in a converted guest bath…and growing up just 5 miles from Disneyland—Walt taught him the magic of the story. …Then there was Frank Lloyd Wright, Kandinsky, Rothko and Jackson Pollock—muses all.

Dan’s photography is in collection at LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), and the Chinese-American Museum (Los Angeles).
