BEAR BUTT BUDDIES by Ave Pildas

Ave Pildas says, "Henri Cartier Bresson and Elliot Erwitt are photographers that I greatly admire. Both Bresson and Erwitt emphasized the importance of the MOMENT: finding a compelling location and waiting for the ideal confluence of elements to shoot a good picture.

I love stationing myself in a neighborhood on both days of celebration and days of average simplicity, capturing folks going about their days. The Human Spirit manifests itself in the streets every day, in both overt and ordinary ways."

Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Ave Pildas worked early in his career as a photo stringer for Downbeat Magazine in the Ohio Valley and Pennsylvania in the 1960's, and has been a successful photographer and educator for the past 40 years.

In 1971 Pildas began working as the Art Director at Capitol Records in Hollywood and designed and photographed album covers for the label's recording artists. He launched a career as a freelance photographer and designer soon after, specializing in architectural and corporate photography.

His photographs have been exhibited in one man shows at the: Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, Photographers Gallery, London, Janus Gallery, Los Angeles, Gallerie Diaframma, Milan, Cannon Gallery, Amsterdam, Gallerie 38, Zurich and numerous group shows. They have been featured in: The New York Times Magazine, 'ZOOM', 'PHOTO', 'CAMERA', 'photographic' and many publications both in the United States and abroad .

Photographs by Ave Pildas are included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Bibliotheca National, Paris; the University of Arizona as well as numerous other public and private collections. He is a Professor Emeritus at Otis College of Design.

Pildas created intimate portraits of Jazz greats in live performance, at small clubs and Jazz Festivals in the Midwest, many have never been seen before. Ave currently lives in Santa Monica, CA.

Aviram Bar-Akiva says, "I am 47 years old, a native-born Israeli, living and working in Tel-Aviv. The passion for photography was always within me, but it was only when I turned 42 that I grabbed a camera and went down to the streets of Tel-Aviv.
Everything I learned about photography is from the streets. It was the asphalt roads, the concrete pavements and the glossy windows that showed me around and it was the people of the city who were my teachers. In my daily life I am an Energy Engineer, designing and analyzing power plants and renewable energy sources."

GO ARIZONA by Cher Davis
(Click on image for larger view)

Cher Davis says, "Capturing nature’s beauty, the way I found it is my foundation. The groundwork starts with both feet in the earth. I let the picture and the vibe from that journey morph the moment into a representation of opportunities that didn’t exist without technology. My style mixes two core pillars: something I love (photography) with skills I have honed (technology).

My vision is to create something out of nothing – to share that moment in time with other humans - enhancing our lives through art.

Discovering the beauty of photography captured me at a young age. Growing up in a family farm that loved natural art, we had hundreds of magazines pictures displaying the art of photography. At 13 years old, my mother gave me my first camera. I started taking pictures of everything. I remember once taking a picture a television “hero” on screen, hoping it might look like I saw him in person!

Along my journey, I photographed President Bill Clinton and author Wally Lamb. And got to work in corporate America alongside some amazing creatives on product cartons. More recent endeavors have challenged me outside of my comfort zone -- food photography. This allows me an opportunity to, not only learn by doing, but also the ability give back to my community.

Donating photographs to women-owned businesses in need of pictures for their on-line stores gives me a great deal of fulfillment. I have artists to thank for pushing me to this level of comfort to display my art.

ANGEL WINGS, FAVIGNANA, SICILY 04 by Deb Achak

Deb Achak says of 'The Aquatic Street', "The Aquatic Street explores my fascination with beach culture and water imagery, a subject matter that is deeply rooted in childhood memories shared with my mother and siblings. Lacking resources to travel, we spent our summer weekends at bustling public beaches near our home in New Hampshire, swimming, playing in the sand, people-watching, and fishing. Those memories create a defining snapshot of my childhood and adolescence.

The Aquatic Street seeks to capture the magic of those playful memories, with a nod to the traditions of street photography. Traveling the world and swimming with my camera allows me to photograph beach culture from the unique vantage point of the water.

The concept of seeing below the surface is a key element of The Aquatic Street. There is a hidden world under the surface of the water but also within each of us that is mysterious and rare. I am curious about the way ordinary bodies suspended in water -- both poetic and painterly -- reveal something about our true nature. We are all exceptional in our own way, but who are we without the artifice of possessions or careers, stripped down to our swimsuits and bare skin, floating weightless and in our joy? The water brings that forth like no other environment."

Deb Achak (b.1968) is a Seattle-based visual artist and storyteller whose work considers the metaphysical, emotional, and physical link between the human and natural world.

She creates large-scale color photographs that explore what is under the surface in each of us. Achak received a BA in Literature from the University of New Hampshire and holds a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Washington.

Achak’s work has been exhibited widely including over 40 exhibitions in institutions such as The National Museum of Anthropology in Tabasco, Mexico; The Lishui Museum of Art in Lishui, China; and The Sofia Photography Festival in Sophia, Bulgaria.

Within the United States, Achak has exhibited at Winston Wachter Fine Art, Seattle; Artspace Gallery, New York, NY; The Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts, Providence, RI; Southeast Center for Photography, Greenville SC; and the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, Santa Fe, NM, among many others.

In addition, her work has been featured in publications including Fraction Magazine, All About Photo Magazine, Lenscratch, Destig, Luxe Interiors, Dodho, and Domino. She was a 2021 Critical Mass Top 200 Finalist.

Achak’s work is represented by Winston Wachter Fine Art, Seattle and New York.

Deb Achak lives and works in Seattle, WA with her husband and two sons in a grand old home that was once a bed and breakfast.

MOM by Ellen Friedlander

Curator Michael Rababy says, "I love the feeling the subject exudes. she loves her daughter and loves life!"

Ellen Friedlander says, "In the often chaotic and overwhelming pace of life, I use my camera to create a visual diary of the places and experiences that I see before me. My process is one of simultaneous observation and reflection, and also integrated with elements of disruption. Ultimately, my style is fueled by curiosity and a commitment to a multiple point of view: I am drawn to the street, landscape, documentary photography and portraiture."

Ellen Friedlander is a Los Angeles-based fine art and documentary artist who uses a variety of in-camera and post processing techniques to reveal the unpredictable, idiosyncratic, inscrutable nature of the human condition. Friedlander is currently an advisor for Pasadena Photography Arts, which promotes diverse photography projects by established and emerging photographers worldwide through Open Show and FORUM events.

She has been featured in Lenscratch, The Hand Magazine, and as guest artist on The Candid Frame podcast, Episode #499. During March-April, 2021, three of Friedlander’s photographs from her "Betrayal” series were in a group show at Austin Desmond Fine Art in London. During that same time, she had her first solo show at The Photographer's Eye Gallery in Escondido, CA in which she exhibited her "Extended Frame™" body of work.
