NECKING by Margaret Hyde
(Click on image for larger view)

Margaret Hyde says, "I collect and photograph things that most people would step on or walk right by: tiny seashells, dandelions and other weeds and scraps of old metal and broken glass. All of them bear the marks of their journeys: flaws, cracks, bumps and bruises that are a testament to the tide of life. I create miniature sculptures and let the play of natural light, water and gravity transform them into ephemeral talismans. Water, which is essential to all life and to my work, inhabits and flows through the sculptures reflecting its infinite memory of the people, places and things that it has encountered along the way. It is a meditation on what it means to be transformed by life and all the elements of nature. The camera enables me to see rightly “what is essential and (usually) invisible to the eye.” (Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince)"

Central to photographer Margaret Hyde’s work is the potential for transformation. Using the lens as an extension of her eye, Hyde hones in on the small details of our natural world and everyday habitat to honor the hidden value of the overlooked and undervalued. Using natural lighting, close-up angles and macro lenses, Hyde monumentalizes and meditates upon the mundane.

Born and raised in Memphis, TN, Hyde’s mother was an avid amateur photographer with her own dark room and an assortment of cameras. Hyde began her own mostly self-taught photographic training at the age of 10, learning to maneuver the dark room and handling manual cameras at summer camp. Growing up amidst the Memphis art community, Hyde became acquainted with photographer William Eggleston and was inspired by his work—particularly the manner in which he was able to transform ordinary, everyday subjects into remarkable images.

The concept of transformation through photography extends to every facet of Hyde’s daily life, as she remains active in service, justice and equality. A native of Memphis, TN, Hyde, along with her family, helped to found Hyde Family Foundations (HFF), a charitable body that supports the National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis and other worthy organizations. In 2008, Hyde produced the Academy and Emmy-nominated documentary short The Witness: From the Balcony of Room 306, which details the last days of Martin Luther King, Jr. In addition to art and filmmaking, Hyde is also a children’s book author and publisher, with titles including Dreadilocks and the Three Slugs, the “Great Art for Kids” series and the “Mo’s Nose” series.

In 2007, Hyde accompanied a documentary film crew to capture the unique beauty of Bhutan. This was followed up in 2008 with an invitation from President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to photograph orphanages and rebuilding efforts in Liberia.

Hyde’s most recent series of photos feature lustrous spaces and objects, inspired by the many years of her living and vacationing by the water. In particular, the abalone shell speaks deeply to Hyde as a metaphor for people and the lives they inhabit. When looked at mindfully in the light, a seemingly worthless broken abalone shell represents emotional traumas and irrevocable experiences. Hyde believes that her photographic subjects contain powerful emotional resonance and a striking visual aesthetic that requires meaningful study. They ask us to evaluate ourselves, and our natural world in a meaningful and transformative way.

Hyde has participated in dozens of group exhibitions, as well as being featured in solo shows in Los Angeles in 2011 and New York in 2015. Two of her pieces were chosen to greet attendees at the Spectrum Art Fair as part of events surrounding Art Basel Miami 2014 and recently participated in CONTEXT Art Miami and SCOPE Miami Beach 2018. Her work is held in private collections including the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston, MA and the Laddie John Dill Private Collection. Hyde lives in Santa Monica, California with her four children.

UNTITLED #1 by Matt LaPierre
(Click on image for larger view)

Matt LaPierre says, "I am a photographer living in Southern Maine.  I am self-taught and began my education about ten years ago. I had quit drinking (I'm grateful to say I'm still sober) and really needed something that would get me moving and be productive.

My mother gave me a digital camera and I started photographing cemeteries.  It took me a couple years to be comfortable with photographing people but before I knew it I was making images of female nudes.

I do not have a large list of professional accomplishments since I've been relatively low-key about my photography.

However, I've had a solo show and I have been in juried into the Maine Photography Show, the Harlow Gallery, the Photo Go-Go Show and have won a couple modest prizes."

A CLOSER LOOK by Michael S. Cohen
(Click on image for larger view)

Michael S Cohen says "I have always been drawn to the peace that I feel when I am around horses. I don’t know that I can quite understand why. Just being around these magnificent animals fills me with a warmth that I don’t ever feel anywhere else. It sounds so silly but, well, there it is. I recently went to the offshore islands of North Carolina to be amongst the Shackleford horses and photograph them. Somehow they seemed to understand how they made me feel as we connected gazes. I made these images just for me but thought that they epitomized this month’s theme."

Michael was born and raised in the Boston area and still lives there…some of the time. His camera has taken him to some of the most photogenic spots on the globe and he is as likely to be found in an airport lounge as his living room. Michael’s first real photographic experience was through the lens of a Minolta SRT-101 where he learned photography as a journalist and a darkroom rat. That early work of capturing a moment influences his style today. His images have won numerous awards, are shown in galleries and hang in homes across the country.

In the advertising world for 35 years, his work is now making images and doting on grandchildren. Michael enjoys imparting what he’s learned to others. He conducts workshops and seminars in photographic technique and has been told he can make the exposure triangle actually
understandable. He enjoys photographing with others as the creative energies are strengthened through shared experiences.

He says, “The bottom line is, I love to shoot. Whether it’s around the corner or around the world there are photographs to be made everywhere. The camera is a great introduction to the people I meet and it breaks down any language barrier almost instantly. Beautiful scenes of nature can be captured; precious moments frozen in time. We all move through our space in the world so fast that we miss some of the most miraculous moment around us. The camera slows me down. It encourages observation. And when I’m lucky, I get to be in the right place at the right time to capture that sliver of a moment through the lens. For me, photography is the never ending search for those slivers.”

THE ESTUARY by Sam Blair
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Sam Blair says, "My Polaris, the North Star that navigates me through this New Dark Age, is Awe. Enough, now, with tribalism, narcissism, and all those lies. Look!  Beauty and Awe surrounds us! The poet, W.B. Yeats said it best: “The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow larger”. I seek those “magic things” that create within me that sense of Beauty, Wonder, and Awe.

I photograph not what I see, but what I feel. Objective reality for me is just the raw material from which I try to express my emotional response. Combining the exterior world with my inner response creates a new reality, expressed in black and white with light and shadows.

I find Awe from those magic things in Nature-our oceans and mountains and forests-and in the animals and in people of all kinds.  All of us are on this journey together, alive at the same time, on the same planet, all star shards from an ancient blast, doing the best we can. I view artists and poets as Apostles of The Awe, whose mission is to remind each other and ourselves, that darkness, like the cold, shadow side of the moon, always gives way to the warm light of the sun."

A self taught, multiple award winning photographer, currently addicted to travel and adventure, having wandered so far through over 90 countries; a recovering trial lawyer, finally in right brain mode as a passionate lover of Nature, particularly drawn to Oceans, plus almost all Homo Sapiens, and our irrepressible impulses for both good and bad; dedicated to making a wobbly world a wee better. Favorite mantra to live by, acquired in hospice volunteer training,  “It’s not about you”.

THERE'S NO IMMUNITY FROM LIFE by Shāna Einhorn
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Shāna Einhorn says, "These works are from my new series, Compost, where I am exploring, as well as creating, the narrative within the mother and daughter relationship. Fundamental themes of identity, fear, birth, significance, belonging and connection are revealed. The following quote has been a guiding principle:
"... human beings are not born once and for all on the day their mothers give birth to them, ... life obliges them over and over again to give birth to themselves.”
Gabriel Garcia Marquez

I am a fine art photographer from Huntington, NY. My art is not about image, it's about essence and as such I think of my work as a spiritual photography. The images explore one's connection to self, each other and the natural world, using mostly old manual cameras with black & white film and lately mobile photography. I came to photography two years after a cancer diagnosis back in 2003 when a friend loaned me a camera.

While struggling with questions regarding despair vs. life the camera became my lifeline. It soon became apparent that photography was to become my life's endeavor as a connection to the medium quickly deepened. One can say that I used this new opportunity as a way to re-shape my world.

My intention was to connect and make good pictures; not to theorize about them – that came much later. The constraints and ramifications of living with chronic illness inform much of my art, as themes of connection and isolation permeate much of the work. Ultimately it is an inquiry about belonging and significance. My work has been in over 35 group exhibitions both juried and otherwise, and currently is in 3 private collections."

Shāna's fine art work has been exhibited across the U.S and Europe in galleries and print including The Center for Fine Art Photography, PhotoPlace Gallery, Lightbox Photographic Gallery, PH21 Gallery, Feature Shoot, The Griffin Museum, The Curated Fridge and photoludica.

LISTEN TO MY WHISPERS by Tori Gagne
(Click on image for larger view)

Tori Gagne says, "My personal relationship with a rescued racehorse has led me into the unique world of the horse. The horse lives in a highly intuitive world of the senses, a world we don't often access as humans. To enter the their world you must be calm, centered and free of tension. This is a place where I am fully present and free of the trappings of daily existence.Through imagery of wild horses and rescued horses, I strive to educate others about the plight of the US wild horse populations living on public lands. A living symbol of the American west, they deserve our respect and humanity.

I am grateful for the opportunity I have to honor this remarkable creature through my art.

I grew up with an artistic grandmother, mother and brother who all influenced my desire to  become an artist later in life after running a small business and raising a family. I have a background in garden design that very much influences my eye    my connection to nature and the outdoors. My brother built a darkroom in my home when I was a middle schooler where I spent hours as a teenager. Photography has been my life almost as long as I can remember. I also have a deep love of
animals inherited from a dog loving family and a mother who nursed injured wild animals and birds back health when I was a small child which informs my equine photography. Animals are often the place where  I find solace."

Una Hayes Ingram says, "I am in a California Zephyr sleeper cabin, traveling between San Francisco and Chicago. The train window curves at the edges and looking through it reminds me of those old leather bound photo albums, in my childhood home in Scotland, of grandparents on a cruise in the 1920’s.

Just as those photographs were not entirely clear, the view from this window is not entirely clear, the window pane marked where time, rain and snow have left a trace. I actually quite like that there is this patina over the window and sometimes I can see the face of my husband Whit emerge like a portrait in the corner that he’s nestled in.

The warm dark interior of the sleeper cabin is like being inside the center of a beautiful big camera moving effortlessly, randomly and surprisingly between close up and zoom as the six carriage train winds around rivers, climbs mountains and crosses the plains of seven states of America. It feels urgent and personal. It feels intimate, seeing the world through this locomotive lens.

The train is moving but so slowly it feels luxurious and though it vibrates it is so gentle that, as outside, nothing is disturbed. I draw in my sketchbook the shapes of snow on the tree tops, forms so generous and of such infinite variety I am in thrall. This is the only thing I draw on my whole journey. We move so quickly through space and life and don’t take time to witness. Here very still quiet scenes move slowly through me. Or rather I am moved.

The scenes outside have a black, white or sepia tone because of the snowy landscapes that cover most of the miles on this journey. We are, in one moment, 7,000 feet up at Donner Peak. The magnificent Ponderosas and Mountain Hemlocks are holding snow so deep that their branches droop - so laden it is astonishing, really. But the air so still that nothing moves and the telephone lines ( does someone talk on the line?) are wrapped a thousand kisses deep in white, entangled like the jewelry of a Prussian Princess. See where it takes me?

I take photographs of this timeless landscape, now and then so white you can only faintly see something emerging - a barn, a truck, a silo - into something recognizable, suggesting life narratives. Now and then a dot of primary color or a patch of uncovered Autumn land, a red or gold, delights as do a field of grazing brown horses or running black cattle.

I print with a feel for early photographic processes and make a little accordion book on shades of snow white paper."

Born in Scotland of Irish parents Una traveled the world in an advertising career spanning two decades before landing in Marin County California where she now lives and practices her art. Proximity to San Francisco allows her access to The San Francisco Art Institute where she attends their studio based Public Education Program. She has studied with a diversity of working artists of different disciplines over the last ten years and her work has shown locally and internationally.

SECOND PLACE

Curator Jody Miller says, "Second place is "Shiloh" by Victory Tischler-Blue. A sharp, striking and emotional portrait of this lovely animal, conveying the peace it gives the viewer."

Victory Tischler-Blue says, "For the last 10 years, I’ve photographed a herd of wild Spanish Mustangs in the Nevada desert - about an hour north of the Las Vegas Strip. Over the years, I became very familiar with the herd and eventually came to “know” the individual family bands within the herd.

On any typical shoot day, I would drive in from Palm Springs, park on the side of the road and just start walking into the desert. Before I knew it, I’d be joined by a handful of Mustangs who would wander with me all day in absolute silence while I’d photograph them. It was an amazing experience to be surrounded by these quiet, gentle giants who seemed to have an abundance of natural curiosity in me, as well as a heart/soul connect with each other.

These horses will probably never understand the depth of the gift they gave me, but I remain forever grateful to them for allowing me access into their realm."

Victory Tischler-Blue is a motion picture producer/director and fine art photographer whose dark, single-frame tableaux evokes a deep sense of melancholy, tension and cinematic drama.

"I'm always drawn to the outliers," Tischler-Blue says. "For me, photography is all about intimacy and the element of surprise. There's a magic that comes along with things not planned and staying open to that leaves a lot of space for the unscripted to manifest."

A former member of the iconic '70s all-girl rock band the Runaways, Tischler-Blue often casts outliers and those who, through their own sense of self or the judgments of others, find themselves straddling their own personal edge.

"There's always a minor chord running through my productions - whether it's a motion picture project or a still image," she says. "Everyone has a story - some are just darker than others..."

Born and raised in Newport Beach, California, Victory Tischler-Blue currently divides her time between homes in Los Angeles, Laguna Beach and Palm Springs, California.

FJORD VIEW by Will Nourse
(Click on image for larger view)

Will Nourse says, " In the world today, amidst increasing nationalism, income inequality, climate change risk, solace can be hard to find.  For me, getting away from it all, whether it be on a lonely road under the stars in the Pisgah Mountains, overlooking an empty fjord in the Westfjords of Iceland or watching sunrise illuminate a mountain peak in the Alps, provides both escape and comfort.  Thinking about Deep and Cosmic Time in those environments help put human time into a bit of perspective and allow me to recharge and face the world again.

Part of the challenge and reward of photography is capturing that ephemeral moment and sharing the experience with the viewer.  In landscape and nature photography, that might be first light on a mountainside, the patterns of foam on water or the layering of clouds over a landscape, but the intent is the same as that of a portrait or even a travel snapshot: ‘this is what I saw and how I felt – experience it with me.’  Hopefully my images help provide that sense of 'solace' to the viewer."

Will Nourse is a landscape photographer known for his use of color and texture to bring his outdoor experiences to life.

He has been an avid photographer for almost twenty years, and his work reflects a lifetime of hiking, backpacking, climbing, skiing and sailing, all of which have given him a deep appreciation for the wonders of the natural world.

His work has been featured at the Paula Estey Gallery in Newburyport, MA and the Davis Orton Gallery in Hudson, NY and a series of images were featured in the first print edition of All About Photo Magazine in June, 2018.  He has also been selected as a Featured Artist on the websites Light Space & Time, Fusion Art and Artsy Shark.

He has exhibited in juried shows at the Cambridge Art Association, the Newburyport Art Association (NAA), the Rockport Art Association, and various galleries across the country.

He currently resides in Amesbury, MA with his wife, daughter, two Wheaten Terriers and two cats.
