EDGE by Christina Storm

Christina Storm says, "My day job taxes the left side of my brain and the other side keeps nagging me for attention. I devote a significant amount of my time outside of work to creative side projects. Photography is a recurring theme that takes a dominant role as a medium. I shoot digital only and at times I turn a photograph into a digital illustration.

My approach is strongly influenced by my heavily design-focused day job. As a user experience professional, I make user interfaces for products for technical audiences. In photography, I allow my eyes to wander and my mind to process inputs in less linear ways. I love creating worlds that tell a story or evoke a feeling. The feeling of a dream or a particular mood. Every piece follows design principles and is representative of my sense for aesthetics. I am drawn to positive and negative space, form, color, contrast, size and scale.

In this project, my desire is to evoke the feeling of calm and wonder in you. When you view my work, you take a deep breath and admire the colors and the form and listen in on the effect that these have on your mood. You don’t immediately know what you are looking at but the form and the color draws you in. You mood is uplifted. Your brain intrigued. Your heart open. You stand and gaze and let your mind drift. For a short moment, you forget everything else around you."

Christina Storm is a German native from the North Sea cost, about a car hour away from the beautiful city of Hamburg. She has been living in Seattle since 1993, where it's just as beautiful and rainy. With her professional career dedicated to the peculiar place where design meets technology (she is a User Experience Manager at Google), she constantly works on side projects to execute her creative side in different contexts. Photography has been a major focus point, along with graphic design and motion graphics. She uses Instagram (@gruselfilm) as a venue to share her work, meet other photographers and get inspired.

Deborah  Sfez says, "My work mainly focuses on the ups and downs of human existence.

I talk about the experience of existence, partnership, overcoming a sickness, fear of life, beauty of being a woman and the impossibility of being perfect.

Photography, for me, means a creative research. What would a troubled soul wish for, after a after a time of torment, if not tranquility and harmony of Nature?"

LET THE OTHERS FOLLOW by Ellen Jantzen
FIRST PLACE
(Click on image for larger view)

Review by curator Jody Miller, "This beautiful image embodies the idea of a place of solace and beckons the viewer inside the image, with its central "tunnel" of light and soft deep color. It's exquisitely crafted and satisfies the seeker in so many ways. Thanks to Ellen for her lovely work.

Miller asks, "How did you begin making these transformed landscapes?"

Ellen Jantzen says, "I began making my transformed landscapes after moving from Southern California to St. Louis Mo. There is a verdant richness to the landscapes in the Midwest that drew me in. Also the seasonal changes inspired me to document areas over and over throughout the year.

I began this type of transformation (blurring a portion of the image) in order to convey my "feelings" about the state of nature, the nature of trees, and how to express their connection to past, present and future. By obscuring a portion of the image through a veil, I hoped to heighten the remaining reality through discovery and reflection.

Also, specifically addressing ‘Let the Others Follow”, I was metaphorically addressing solace. Where do the stepslead? Who are the followers?"

Miller asks, "What was your initial inspiration for them?"

Jantzen says, "I have always loved trees. Trees teach us about belonging; they remind us that life doesn't need permission to prevail. Trees are sanctuaries. They are seen as powerful symbols of growth, decay and resurrection.

Trees have played a prominent role in many folktales and legends and have been given deep and sacred meanings.

But, a tree's longevity can lull usinto a false sense of immortality.
It is this very impermanence that I long to understand through my photographic explorations. There is an ineffable natural beauty.... too great to be expressed or described in words."

Additional review by curator Susan Spiritus: "I am in complete agreement with Jody Miller regarding her comments and review of Ellen Jantzen’s photograph, “Let the Others Follow”.  At the outset, I must state that my gallery represents Ellen Jantzen’s photographs, which I have long been attracted to and affiliated with., so it is only natural that would respond with positive comments.
Ellen’s work, like that of the old master, Jerry Uelsmann, is flawless and inviting and leaves you wondering. It draws you in and walks you through the photograph. In “Let the Others Follow” one clearly steps into and on to the path, carefully noting the uneven steps along the way. The pathway is clear - we can see the definition of all of the grasses and weeds, but as we progress along the path, our vision becomes cloudy - and the image itself becomes blurry and as we approach the end of the pathway - that which we can see, it continues but we know not where or for how much longer.
This photograph has always been one of my personal favorites."
http://susanspiritusgallery.com/

Additional review by curator Peter Bennett:
"Exquisite was the word that instantly popped into my head when I first saw
'Let the Others Follow' by Ellen Jantzen. It is a joy indeed when a photographer can both evoke a feeling, in this case Solace, and invite. I will spend the rest of the day wishing I could wander off into this lush
forest to enjoy its quiet and beautiful greenness."
www.citizenoftheplanet.com

Additional review by Wendi Schneider:
"Ellen’s beautifully finessed photograph invites you into a mystical, verdant universe of serenity. A luminous light lures the viewer to explore another world, beyond the trees that seem to reach to the heavens."
www.wendischneider.com

Additional review by Steve Zmak:
"I’m thrilled to see the cliche vertical motion blur applied in a new and interesting way by combining it with an f/64-sharp landscape, rather than just have it stand alone as a 1-note technique. The combination of focused image with blurred image creates an original composition that is more illustrated fantasy than literal nature. Very clever."
www.SteveZmak.com

Additional review by Fran Forman:
"Over the years, Ellen has developed a beautiful style of landscape photography, encouraging the viewer to stop, look and take a deep breath. Her images portray the serenity in the natural world, so often ignored and overlooked by the commotion and fragmentation of our lives."

Ellen Jantzen says, "Trees teach us about belonging; they remind us that life doesn't need permission to prevail. Trees are sanctuaries; they provide solace. If we listen closely, we can learn the ancient law of life. They are seen as powerful symbols of growth, decay and resurrection.
They have played a prominent role in many folktales and legends and have been given deep and sacred meanings.

But, a tree's longevity can lull us into a false sense of immortality.
It is this very impermanence that I long to understand through my photographic explorations. There is an ineffable natural beauty.... too great to be expressed or described in words

In this series I am using imagery to convey my "feelings" about the state of nature, the nature of trees, and how to express their connection to past, present and future. By obscuring a portion of the image through a veil, I strive to heighten the remaining reality through discovery and reflection.

I don’t consider myself a "photographer" but an image-maker, as I create work that bridges the world of photography, prints and collage. As digital cameras began producing excellent resolution, I found my perfect medium. It was a true confluence of technical advancements and creative desire that culminated in my current explorations in photo-inspired art using both a camera to capture imagery and a computer to alter, combine and manipulate the pieces.

My work is shown and published internationally:

DAY DREAM by Jane Gottlieb
(Click on image for larger view)

Jane Gottlieb says, "I have been expressing my joy of art with paint, shapes and colors since I was very young.
I started as a painter, evolved into a photographer, and eventually began hand-painting on my Cibachrome prints over 35 years ago.  Before Photoshop I found this way to express a new magical reality with the vivid, saturated and unrealistic colors that I painted into each photographic print..

For the past 25 years I have been scanning my one-of-a-kind hand-painted prints and my library of 35mm Kodachrome color transparencies taken over the last 45 years.

I love to paint, collage and enhance them with Photoshop, creating my own idyllic world!

I produce archival museum quality chromogenic prints, archival glossy canvas artworks, and my favorite
new archival digital medium: dye sublimation printing on aluminum.

My art has been shown worldwide in many solo exhibitions including:Butler Institute of American Art, Ohio;
Carnegie Art Museum, Oxnard, CA; Laguna Art Museum, CA; Petersen Automotive Museum, LA, CA;
LA County Natural History Museum, CA; Monterey Museum of Art, CA; Nancy Hoffman Gallery, NYC, NY;
L’Image Gallery, Rome, Italy; Louis Stern Gallery, West Hollywood, CA; Wall Space, Santa Barbara, CA.

I have also been included in countless group exhibits and Art Fairs around the world over the last 30 years,
and collected by museums, foundations, corporations and individuals worldwide. Numerous magazine articles,
magazine and book covers, two museum exhibition catalogues and two books have been published of my art,
Garden Tales and Car Tales.

Recently I have had the honor of being asked to install my art in many wonderful public spaces on exhibit for 10 years:

In 2013 I installed more than 70 large art works at the UCLA Law Library and UCLA Anderson School of Management, including a commissioned 5'x10' piece.
I also installed an show of my “Joy Rides” series printed on aluminum at the Car Museum in Oxnard CA.

In 2014 I installed 20 new very large artworks printed on aluminum at the UCSB Gervirtz Graduate
School of Education.

In 2015 I created the First Vertical Art Gallery at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health: I got a drab eight story stairway freshly painted bright white, fortunately it had good lighting & I filled it with my large artworks. This is about encouraging people to make a healthy choice and use the stairs instead of the
elevators, and of course being drawn into the stairwell by my exciting art exhibit!

In 2016 I installed 15 more large artworks at the UCLA Young Graduate Library, in a huge first floor study hall!

In 2017 I installed another 15 artworks in the UCSB English Dept building & I had the inaugural exhibit at a new special art gallery at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden entitled  “Jane Gottlieb Fantasy Gardens”.

In 2018 I had a 4 month exhibition entitles “Jane Gottlieb Photographs France” at the Art, Design & Architecture Museum at UCSB!!"

AMEN 80x64, 2018 by Karen Amy Finkel Fishof
When we gather together to pray for peace, it is appropriate to say, “Amen.”
(Click on image for larger view)

Karen Amy Finkel Fishof says, "By pushing the boundaries of conventional black and white photography, I produce large scale, life size, one-of-a-kind photograms, using a variety of techniques, creating imagery as no one has done before.

Photograms provide the medium I need to tell my stories. Through them, I can express ideas about society and mass media. I love the creative process of these works, from the exposure to the development. The magic of seeing the image appear when the photo paper is placed in the chemistry, knowing it was a moment captured with no negative. I relish the anticipation in the darkroom of seeing how various objects live in the light and how light wraps around them and capturing that living dance on 2D, still, photo paper.

I am influenced by all artistic mediums including interior design, film, music, fashion and social media. I've worked in all these areas professionally, and draw from their current trends. The photogram process, the way I'm doing it, allows me to collage these areas together into one cohesive image statement.

Photograms are a kind of camera-less photography. I consider it drawing with light. It gives me the strong imagery and narrative, with hidden subtleties. Unlike conventional photography, each piece is a one-of-a-kind, like a painting.

All persons and objects serve a double role. Not only are they instruments in imagery, but also declare a statement about the medium itself. We are forced to recognize a new aspect of the person or object touching the surface, the form itself.

There is a presence that remains of the people and objects, sort of like when you see the hand prints on the Hollywood "Walk of Fame". You know that the person had physical contact with the paper, unlike conventional photography or portraiture.

The work also makes one cognizant of the relationship we have with objects. We almost always have an object in our hands, whether it be a phone, pen, fork, cup, remote control, gun, bible or flowers. We are dependent on them and they define us.

Recent Photograms depict my journey into adulthood exploring themes of religion, parenting and life in a Los Angeles community."

Born in the Bronx, NY, Karen was heavily influenced by the NY art scene, hanging out in clubs with Andy Warhol and Keith Haring in the 80’s. She apprenticed under artist, Marylyn Dintenfass and was greatly influenced by her thematic color schemes and work practice. Karen attended Syracuse University as a painting major, where she received a BFA in painting including a year abroad at St. Martins School of Art, London, UK, where she first started creating photograms under the same professors that worked with Gilbert and George and showing her paintings in New York.

Karen has been working as a painter, photographer, window dresser and graphic designer creating window designs for Macy’s, Lord & Taylor, Dress Barn Stores and major music labels as well as design for licensed products for Kraft Foods, Simon Malls, Crayola, Nickelodeon, Imax, Cartoon Network and Gameboy after receiving a second degree in Graphic Design.

“I am influenced by all artistic mediums including interior design, film, music, fashion and social media. I've worked in all these areas professionally, and draw from their current trends. My artistic process, allows me to collage these areas together into one cohesive statement and image.”

Currently, Karen has been active in the Los Angeles Arts District, exhibiting frequently and pushing the boundaries of conventional black and white photography, producing large scale, life size, on-of-a-kind photograms using a variety of techniques, creating imagery as no one has done before. She has also bent the norms on the traditional “rectangle on the wall” by creating unique, 3D modular art.

Some of her most brilliant and exclusive works remain in private and corporate collections.

“Seeing your work installed at this exhibition meant more to me than the digital submission; I liked it even more.”

What was going through the minds of the women at the Women's March? Why were they there? Did they have a common purpose or did they come for different reasons? This work explores those questions.

BLISS by Katherine Richmond
(Click on image for larger view)

Katherine Richmond says, "I took up photography when I was a teen, borrowing my fathers 35mm camera. Since the early beginnings, I am attracted to nature, portraits, nautical, still life, documentary and in recent years abstract photography. As a child growing up, our family visited the North shore of Massachusetts every summer, and since 1984 I’ve made it my home. Living near the ocean has had a large influence on my life growing up and as an adult.

Exploring and experimenting are my nature. During these moments I think about what the physics of the situation at play could be while I’m shooting. It is this way of thinking, and pushing the boundaries of our own limitations that I discover what might be possible and then capture it with the technology available today.

With my photographs, I strive to bring viewers the world of light and expression —those fleeting moments, which are physically impossible to be seen with the human eye. These moments are powerful, and peaceful. They are ageless emotional expressions, from a four year old to a grown adult, it is a similar experience.

This series "Splash" looks like a feeling of peace, a joyful transcendence to a space in time where the mindset is suspended of all intellectual thought and afterwards a renewed sense of fulfillment occurs.

I have been shooting the ocean in many ways for years. This time I set out to capture people in the ocean surf. I have been in and around the surf and waves my entire life. So, I began searching for people who were open to being in that freeing space captured in those brief moments. They were unaware of my presence, which enabled me to photograph them candidly.

My photographs represent blissful moments. You could call it a spiritual moment in time. For the individuals in the surf it’s their love of the feeling of water, how it collides, surrounds them, and lifts them from their weight emotionally and physically. Water has been and always will be a source for comfort in one form or another.

Through my photographs people may gain awareness and feel what’s possible for themselves when they are in any kind of experience with water. Most of all I hope they gain enjoyment from seeing my subjects enjoying their experiences with water.

Since 1993 I have participated in juried competitions and exhibitions. Up to now I have won eighteen awards, thirteen are placements from international photographic competitions.(IPA Awards, NDAwards, International Color Awards) My photos have appeared in three separate publications and are in many private collections across the country."

Kayla O'Neal says, "My grandmother has taught me that even through the difficulties of life there are always things that can bring you peace.  She found that tranquility and comfort through her love of animals, and she passed that onto me.  This series of photos show the solace of animals in how the interact with humans, each other, and how they can be at ease just existing."

Kayla O’Neal is a Masters of Fine Arts candidate in drawing and illustration at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana. She earned her BFA from Southern Arkansas University in Game, Animation, and Simulation Design in Magnolia, Arkansas where she also served as an art instructor in the summer of 2017 for the annual Game Development Camp.

AS SUMMER FADES by Kayla Story
(Click on image for larger view)

Kayla Story says, "I see the work I make as a response to distance. I grew up in a single parent military household with no father in sight, moving every two years to a new city and a new community. This near constant rearranging of surroundings often left me isolated and ultimately I began to look at, and preserve images of, the people around me as a way to connect. Somehow this process became a tool for understanding the psychological experiences we all commonly struggle with as individuals.

As I have grown as an artist the practice of photography, printmaking, and paper, has continued to enable me to explore a collective narrative of human struggle, nostalgia, and depth of the emotional landscape.

Everything we are is a construction, but I think it would be naive to think it is a random construction. There is an essential nature to the kind of mythology created through the elaborate work the mind does to build meaning, belief, and self from the constant onslaught of experience and social or cultural standards. I am fascinated by the way a person’s memory is influenced and augmented and how these inevitably unfixed versions of history become the basis for projecting who we are. For me, it is crucial to explore how every individual is shaped by the external world around us, some of which we choose and much of which we don’t."

Milan Kundra, writes in The Unbearable Lightness of Being,  “The heaviest of burdens crushes us, we sink beneath it, it pins us to the ground. But…The heavier the burden, the closer our lives come to the earth, the more real and truthful they become. Conversely, the absolute absence of burden causes man to be lighter than air, to soar into heights, take leave of the earth and his earthly being, and become only half real, his movements as free as they are insignificant. What then shall we choose? Weight or lightness?” My work embraces this same dissonance created by the interpretation of experiences either present or absent in a life. I aim to explore the makeup of our separate realities and how those realities play into the building of the communities we are currently bound by as well as the ones we dream to create.

Growing up on more than a few military bases, Kayla Story’s work focuses on the complexity and inconsistency of individual perception in the process of constructing who we are based on our experiences of people, places, and culture. She is an MFA candidate at the University of Wisconsin - Madison working in photography, printmaking, and installation, and received a BFA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago in 2011. She currently teaches Intro to Digital Technologies in the Foundations Program of the Art Department at UW Madison. Recently, she has also been awarded multiple scholarships to summer workshops on the photographic portrait and storytelling at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado. Her current stream of research and resulting body of work on the topic of fatherlessness has been supported by the Madison Arts Commission as well as by the Overture Center for the Arts. Kayla’s work has also been reviewed and exhibited by The Arts and Literature Laboratory (Madison, WI), Aint-Bad, Wally Douma Student Art Gallery (Minneapolis, MN), Indestructible Energy Zine (London, UK), Slideluck (Austin, TX), and Rum Magazine (Graz, Austria).

COOL MOMENT ON A HOT BERMUDIAN DAY by Kristen Powell
(Click on image for larger view)

Kristen Powell says, "I am interested in our ability to gain intuitive knowledge from the visual world around us. Influence of this stems from hyperawareness- the act of absorbing information through a perspective that enhances ordinary observation.

My photographs act as notes to recall the ambivalent surface of this experience while re-contextualizing visual languages to easily manipulate metaphoric information. This process outlines a way to instinctively collect and share these symbols alluding to self-reflection and personal growth. I believe what sets me apart from others would be my interest in collecting moments that others easily overlook… whether this is curating a series of random images to compose a quick narrative on the spot, or capturing a new perspective of a mundane object.

Originally from Coventry, CT I am currently residing in Boston, MA. I attended the Lesley University College of Art and Design (formerly the Art Institute of Boston) and graduated with a BFA in photography with a minor in art history in 2016. Among the class of 2018, I finished graduate school and earned a Master of Fine Arts at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston at Tufts University.

For the Summers of 2017 and 2018, I began teaching drawing and digital photography at Boston College High School. In the present, I am close to completing a Post Graduate Teaching Fellowship at the SMFA Boston in digital photography."

CACTUS by Lorraine Meyers
(Click on image for larger view)

Lorraine Meyers says, "I am a Southern California based photographer. I struggle with Bipolar Disorder. It is unsurprisingly, a particularly violent mode of existence.

Naturally, I often contemplate, even lust for solace. I take it any place that it is offered freely. In my experience where I find it most often is through the process of creating art. It has become the single still point in a life otherwise defined by constant shifts. It is for me as spiritual an experience as it one of refuge.

I think my images invoke a more central theme of solace by placing an emphasis on the natural world. As a personal interpretation; the natural world symbolizes the juxtaposition of chaos and complete order. I find comfort in this duality. More broadly, I think nature can invoke a group consciousness, as well as a smallness. In the eyes of the natural world there is no discrimination between the social constructs we create, or the practical matters we invent. There only is, or there is not.

I am a twenty three year old student with a passion for visual art in all its mediums, and an unfortunate mental illness. I have no formal training or experience, and yet here I am."
