Larry Chait says, "I work largely intuitively; my ideas for images come to me when I least expect them, determined by where I happen to find myself, what my mood is, and what thoughts happen to be floating in and out of my head. Most of them I forget straight away. It usually takes me a long time to appreciate my own work and its meaning. But I'm beginning to believe that it all has something to do with imposing order onto a chaotic world.

I am a Chicago photo-based artist who has been actively working since 2002. I studied at the MCA and Columbia College. My work has been in the MoCP’s Midwest Photographers Project, The Chicago Project at Edelman Gallery and the Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis. I have exhibited widely throughout the country and internationally in 12 solo and more than 80 group exhibitions."

CAUTION by Lee Musgrave
(Click on image for larger view)

Lee Musgrave says, "Composition is fundamental to art photography. It communicates the primary intention of the artist. Most artists address it within a rectangular format & noticeable depth of field. Often I prefer engaging it within a square & shallow picture plane for doing so bonds more directly with the abstract qualities of the image revealing the vitality of each line, shape, color and texture so the whole appears greater than the sum of its parts. Further, the square format lessens the significance of the subject’s identity and brings the viewer more directly into the conceptual dynamism of the captured visual image.

Originally from Perth, Australia I studied in Los Angeles with artists Hans Burkhardt (Swiss) and Fritz Faiss (German). Hans was studio partner of Arshile Gorky. Fritz studied at the Bauhaus with Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky. I earned a Master of Art degree from California State University, Los Angeles and my artwork has been exhibited in numerous solo & group exhibitions.

I am the recipient of an American National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and specialize in abstract still-life photography which were most recently exhibited in the 2018 Barcelona Foto Biennale; at L.A. Artcore Gallery, Los Angeles; Galerie Sehnsucht, Rotterdam, NL; at Praxis Gallery, Minneapolis, MN; in a special curated exhibit for The Photo Review Magazine online edition; in the 2016 Berlin Foto Biennale; and from February 2019 through March 31, 2020 at Blue Sky Gallery, Portland, Oregon.

I share my photographs via Facebook, Instagram, Lensculture.com & my website www.leemusgrave.com.

My studio is in White Salmon, Washington, USA. Lee Musgrave, March 2020.

GRAYSCAPE I by Liyu Xue
(Click on image for larger view)

In this group of work, Liyu  Xue explores the murky realm of the black and white, where the intensity of the consciousness fluctuates, the bodily presence starting to merge with the surroundings, movement becomes fluid, our self-oriented mind expands and a different self-object-space identity merges.

His works offer a radical and somewhat alternative way of image-making and create new spaces for speculation. The works then became a semiautonomous aspect of lived experience for the artist himself as much as the viewer.

Liyu Xue is an emerging interdisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles. Using an array of media including video, performance, and photography, he explores the performative nature of image-making. Liyu also invests in consciousness research and neuroscience, where he finds new perspectives and evidence to think about the bodily presence and the embodiment. He received his March from School of Architecture at Pratt Institute, where he also studied photography and performance at the School of Art.

Career highlights:

Liyu recently won the Best in Category (Photography) award in the 2020 Bank of the Arts National Juried Exhibition by Craven Art Council.

ONE GOT AWAY by Malcolm Easton
(Click on image for larger view)

Malcolm Easton says, "I collect well-used domestic objects—things discarded or set aside by their original owners.

Though I have no direct personal connection with each piece, there is always something in my own experience that leads me to choose one and pass over another. In my current project I draw on this store of artifacts to make temporary arrangements that exist only for the purpose of being photographed. I’m drawn to the shapes, colors and textures of each piece—along with the associations it may evoke. I place familiar objects in unfamiliar juxtapositions, sometimes defying gravity and sometimes defying logic.  The objects within a single image may suggest overlaid memories of childhood and adulthood.

My approach to lighting plays a central role. I use only natural light, and I aim to emphasize the tactile qualities of each element. Working in a windowed studio, I use a handheld mirror to reflect a beam of sunlight onto my arrangement. While the shutter is open I move the mirror, adding a gestural component to the illumination.

I invite viewers to examine their own store of objects, some still in use, others set aside, still others that reside only in memory."

Malcolm Easton has been a collector and tinkerer all his life. Born in New York, he's a longtime resident of Berkeley, California. His still life photographs reflect our consumer culture and the life cycle of objects that pass through it. He draws on many historical influences, including Robert Rauschenberg’s Combines, Joseph Cornell’s assemblages, the Unmonumental Sculptures exhibit at The New Museum, as well as classic Dutch and Flemish still lifes. His work is represented by Walker Fine Art in Denver.

FLAME KISSED by Malicious Sheep
Each time a fire is lit, the colours and patterns on the grate shift as the metal reacts and oxidizes.
(Click on image for larger view)

Malicious Sheep says, "I like to explore. I capture moments in nature that are often overlooked.

I take portraiture photographs of inanimate objects, flora, fauna, and fungi. I want to capture moments that are emotional. I enjoy finding repeating geometric patterns and matching palettes. I look for a musical quality in my subject matter. Something that vibrates and breathes. I want my photographs to give the feeling of stumbling upon a moment with much larger and complex story. Finding the beauty and balance in both growth and decay, I want to tell the stories of life forgotten. Spiders, insects, birds, plants, mushrooms, lichens and rust are the main focus of my photographic work.

I will wait. If there is a photo opportunity but a leaf is in the way of the shape I am trying to capture, I wait for it to be blown away rather than move it myself. I will wait for the right kind of light for the mood I am trying to capture. I work in all types of weather and take my time exploring the textural changes that occur after dew, rain saturation, snow and drought.

As a self taught multidisciplinary artist, I like to find connections and common threads between many fields of study within my artistic expression.

Maintaining the integrity of the spaces I intrude upon is crucial to me. My photographs are captured in situ, have not been photoshopped, staged or captured with artificial lighting. Raw all the way."

Malicious Sheep is a differently-able, queer multidisciplinary artist and photographer from rural Simcoe County, ON. The artist is self-taught in many mediums including, but not limited to drawing, painting, sculpture, fibre, mixed media, performance, assemblage of found objects, digital and time-based art.

Malicious Sheep has developed motor and mobility issues in recent years and had transitioned primarily to photography as it is the most accessible medium the artist can use at this time.

The artist's mobility issues necessitates the repeated examination and photographic documentation of wildlife within a half-acre property over time. Themes of study include; growth and decay, isolation, worth, as well as patterns and cycles in nature relevant to biomimetics.

Being descendant from craftspersons, clockmakers, ship builders, soldiers and scientists, Malicious Sheep draws from the skills and lessons of these professions and reflects them into artistic expression.

CONJUNCTIVE POINTS by Maureen Haldeman
(Click on image for larger view)

Maureen Haldeman says, "This new work is a color extension of my black and white Defining shadow series, in which I used the dance of light and shifting shadows to define the images; my focus has now shifted more to unexpected intersections of geometric form, shapes and lines.

In both cases I am searching for  new methods to ‘read the city’, without reference to recognizable places. The abstractions inherent in architecture are my subjects.  The images are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretations become multifaceted, as the structures themselves."

Maureen Haldeman was born in Holland, raised in Montreal and now resides in Malibu, California.

After settling in Los Angeles, she established MJH Photography in Malibu, specializing in portraiture and then expanding her photographic horizons to include architectural and street photography.

After art history and fine art photography studies at UCLA she began shooting nature – primarily the ocean and its surrounding landscape and abstractions found in the urban landscape. Maureen has taught photography and darkroom skills at the College level, done freelance work for publications including The Los Angeles Times, and has been commissioned to do private photographic projects for the entertainment industry.

Her work is frequently used in set design for film, television and commercials and her photographs are exhibited in galleries nationally and abroad. She has been featured in many publications, online galleries and blogs, including Lenscratch, L'oeil de la Photographie, Silvershotz, Featureshoot, Fusion Art, and Fabrik Magazine, as well as on Duncan Miller Gallery's 'Your Daily Photograph.'
In addition to being part of private collections her photographs are also part of the City of Malibu’s public collection and The Bieneke Library at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut. She is represented by Fabrik Project in Los Angeles.

Haldeman was appointed to serve as a member of the Malibu Arts Task Force, to identify public art opportunities and implement a public arts policy for the city; she continues to be active in Los Angeles art-related events.

Career Highlights:

Recent career highlights include "Defining Shadows" solo exhibition (2019) at Fabrik Projects Gallery, Los Angeles.
Participation in group exhibitions in Paris, Italy, Japan, Hungary (awarded Juror's Prize) and Spain.

Group shows throughout the US, including recent award for 3rd place in Luminosity at the New York Center for Photographic Art.
New work since quarantine on view in Here Comes the Sun, a virtual 3D Gallery viewing experience.

Patrick Zélis says, "In this photos, I find my interest in composition, the play of color and light. Focusing on details, I compose graphic images with a minimalist aesthetic, where abstraction often takes on the representation of the landscape. An approach that reflects my way of seeing the world and that allows to rediscover spaces under a different eye."

Patrick Zélis is an amateur photographer who lives in Belgium and likes the street photography and the graphic compositions.
He exhibited in several cities  : Brussels (Art Truc Troc 2016, 2020), Paris (festival Regards Croisés 2019), New York (FOCUS LA finalists exhibition summer 2019), Budapest (BIFA winners exhibition 2019), …

CUBES & MARBLE by Peter Miller
(Click on image for larger view)

Peter Miller says of his series, "Small Worlds", "Damn virus. The virus hit in the SF Bay Area in early March 2020 putting a temporary stop to two of my ongoing series, Scenes, San Francisco, and Street Performers. I'm dependent on public transportation and clearly it was too great a risk, I had to stop shooting in the city.
With my projects shut down by the virus, I was creatively and physically stuck. There was no travel and little close human contact. I'm fortunate to have my studio and workshop space to work in, though it's very small.

Necessity, the mother of invention. So, I
began experimenting. First I worked on photo montages using existing images.
Then I pulled out an old macro lens that I had almost sold on EBay. I shot small objects with very fine detail to blend into scenes that mixed a wide range of scale. I'm still woking on these montages but they are very time consuming.

On a whim, I shot some small objects within a composition using the macro lens and it actually worked as a piece of art on its own.

I refined my macro process over time, gathering information on YouTube. Then
an old project suggested taking my macro compositions further.

An old theme resurrected.
Several years ago I was a marketing communications consultant to Polaroid's digital imaging group. I produced several projects to "prove" the imaging quality of Polaroid technology. One of the projects was the production of a collection of images that re-created 17th century Dutch flower paintings. All of the images were highly detailed, painstakingly constructed and sourced, each set costing thousands of dollars.

To be true to the original paintings required an understanding of their intent, symbolism, and meaning. Religion played a major role in all aspects of life. It was assumed that a representation of a vase of flowers had meaning transmitted not just between the artist and the the viewer, but also by God. Underlying themes in 17th century still life paintings explored the fragile nature of life and beauty, the prospect of decay and death, and the afterlife.

Back to the present.
It all began to come together. I liked the whimsical nature of the props that I could gather from my studio, workshop, odds and ends in the house and the gardens outside. Each of the scenes are very small in real life, the largest being 8 x 8 x 8 inches. I can build the sets for my "Small Worlds" quickly and make small incremental variants to make a final composition.

The collection you see here are all very recent images from this summer. Now that I've seen the results of the early experiments I will continue on and build some sets and backgrounds in my workshop. I'll buy a few props on eBay, maybe add some additional lighting but I'm keeping this project low budget with as many found objects as possible.
The virus lockdown is still in force here in California. Will we ever get back to a normal life? But the pandemic did force me to see things in a new way and create my own "Small Worlds"."

DEPTH OF FIELD by Rich Vogel
HONORABLE MENTION

Rich Vogel says, "When people ask me what I photograph, I answer, half seriously, "Things that don't move."

My approach to photography is deliberate, which is one reason I concentrate on landscapes.

When I photograph landscapes, I usually focus on lines: the horizontal of the horizon, the verticals of trees, the diagonals of hills and mountains.

When I thought of the the theme of primary shapes, it surprised me to notice that some of my favorite images are composed around circles and ovals. I’m not sure what this means, but one aspect of these figures suggests the unbroken cycle of life.

What brings these three very different images together perhaps, is that all three in different ways hint that things go on, that even that magnificent tree that is now gone will be replaced by another, that even our small planet is just one of countless others that we listen for and that others will be out there long after we’re gone. This makes us feel small, but I find this promise of continuity reassuring.

I use mostly black and white film in medium and large format to take my time and capture detail and to concentrate on variations and balance of tone, contrast and composition.  I develop and print the negatives using traditional darkroom processes, partly to concentrate more on the images and tones, but mostly because I’m tired of sitting in front of a computer and enjoy the process, working with my hands.

Bio

Travel for work and the iPhone revived my interest in photography.  After a brief fling with digital photography, I fell in love with film and darkroom processes.  After retiring from a career in software, I TAed at the New England School of Photography, I still struggle in the darkroom, wander the woods north of Boston and travel under the big skies out West every summer.

Career Highlights:

I started showing my work in 2014 at Theia Studios in North Andover, Massachusetts. Since then, I have shown work at Camera Commons, The Darkroom Gallery, the Griffin Museum of Photography, a photo of the day at Don't Take Pictures and an honorable mention on L.A. Photo Curator."
