Ave Pildas says, "I’ve always been attracted to exploring shape, symmetry and asymmetry in my over fifty-year career. Instead of the traditional bowl of fruit, veggies, and a dead rabbit or pheasant, these still lifes focus on basic shapes and primary colors, creating multi-dimensional abstraction.
I arrange industrial items shaped like circles, squares, andtriangles, on patterns to create shadows, reflection, depth and dimensionwithin the image. There is a definite nod to Dada, De Stijl, Surrealism, The Bauhaus, and other influences from my design education. I have created 30 of thesecompositions to date. I continue to work on this project and add to this seriesbecause there is so much more to discover in the world of geometrics."
Whether photographing jazz greats in smoke-filled clubs, the gritty theatrics on infamous Hollywood Boulevard or the spontaneousinteractions between people and animals at locations world wide – Ave Pildas offers a rich and diverse survey of contemporary life.
Pildas has been taking pictures that combine his keen observationalability with his exceptional prowess as a designer for over fifty years. His photographs have appeared in national and international publications. Many of his images of Hollywood Boulevard from the 1970s are represented in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the New YorkPublic Library. Three books of his photographs have been published: Art DecoLA, Movie Palaces, and recently Bijou, released in October 2016 by NazraeliPress. He is also Professor Emeritus at Otis College of Art and Design.

Swen Bernitz says, "The untitled images are part of the series "Point and Line to Plane". In 1926, Wassily Kandinsky published his theoretical thoughts on painting in the Bauhaus book "Point and Line to Plane", a key text for understanding abstraction. During this time, he taught as a master at the Bauhaus, including in the preliminary course "Analytical Drawing". His analytical drawing lessons, in which students abstracted self-arranged still lifes based on the basic forms of circle, square, triangle and rhombus, were intended to teach students the ability to use abstraction as the basis for independent, synthetic design as well as an understanding of abstract art as an evolutionary step in the history of art and humanity. During the Dessau Bauhaus period, he lived with his wife Nina in one of the Masters' Houses in Burgkuehner Allee 59/61 (today Friedrich-Ebert-Alle). "Kandinsky had a tremendously creative phase in Dessau, perhaps even the most productive phase of his entire life," writes Nina Kandinsky in her memoirs. The photo series shows the architecture of the Bauhaus buildings in Dessau in the abstract, geometric art style of Kandinsky 100 years after the founding of the Bauhaus, referring to the illustrations in his Bauhaus book and teaching materials."

Eric M. Renard says, "For this series of black & white images I have been exploring geometric shapes in architecture. The key elements of these images consist of circles, squares and triangles, which interact with each other in both two and 3 dimensional spaces."
Eric M.Renard, is a Los Angeles based Photographer. Born in New York, he attended school in Riverdale, NY. Eric spent his summers in Maine, where he was first exposed to photography and learned his way around a dark room. Eric’s passion for photography was once again ignited at Tufts University in Boston, where he studied under Sigfried Halus.
After graduating, Eric moved to San Francisco, as an architectural photographer before moving to Los Angeles. Eric’s unique exposure to both urban and rural living can be seen throughout his work, as he is equally at home in both settings.
Whether working in black and white or vibrant colors, his urban cityscapes and rural landscapes often reflect an eerie sense of peace and quiet, rarely portraying more than a few people.
Eric’s photography has been exhibited in galleries in Los Angeles and Minnesota and viewed digitally around the world, receiving numerous awards.

John Kosmer says, "My photography embraces formal elements as powerful tools to reveal the allure of my images.
Formal elements go beyond shapes to include an image that is totally accounted for within the frame. Everything in the frame contributes to the image composition. I take responsibility for the entire image so the viewer is not distracted by extraneous material."

(Very Large Array, New Mexico):
HONORABLE MENTION

Rich Vogel says, "When people ask me what I photograph, I answer, half seriously, "Things that don't move."
My approach to photography is deliberate, which is one reason I concentrate on landscapes.
When I photograph landscapes, I usually focus on lines: the horizontal of the horizon, the verticals of trees, the diagonals of hills and mountains.
When I thought of the the theme of primary shapes, it surprised me to notice that some of my favorite images are composed around circles and ovals. I’m not sure what this means, but one aspect of these figures suggests the unbroken cycle of life.
What brings these three very different images together perhaps, is that all three in different ways hint that things go on, that even that magnificent tree that is now gone will be replaced by another, that even our small planet is just one of countless others that we listen for and that others will be out there long after we’re gone. This makes us feel small, but I find this promise of continuity reassuring.
I use mostly black and white film in medium and large format to take my time and capture detail and to concentrate on variations and balance of tone, contrast and composition. I develop and print the negatives using traditional darkroom processes, partly to concentrate more on the images and tones, but mostly because I’m tired of sitting in front of a computer and enjoy the process, working with my hands.
Bio
Travel for work and the iPhone revived my interest in photography. After a brief fling with digital photography, I fell in love with film and darkroom processes. After retiring from a career in software, I TAed at the New England School of Photography, I still struggle in the darkroom, wander the woods north of Boston and travel under the big skies out West every summer.
Career Highlights:
I started showing my work in 2014 at Theia Studios in North Andover, Massachusetts. Since then, I have shown work at Camera Commons, The Darkroom Gallery, the Griffin Museum of Photography, a photo of the day at Don't Take Pictures and an honorable mention on L.A. Photo Curator."
