BETWEEN STEPS by Robert Richardson

Robert Richardson says, "The earlier work I exhibited was influenced by pop art, but in recent years, most of my work has more complex compositions and relates to the humanism of street photography, with sometimes a flavour of surrealism. As with many photographers, I suspect, when I observe the graphic strength of primary shapes, it becomes an element I want to incorporate in a composition.

I began as a poet, concrete poet and small press publisher. An interest in typography led to a degree in Communication Design at a London polytechnic. Following a teacher training course, I worked as a lecturer in the further education sector. During this time I completed a Master’s degree in Education, and subsequently became a Principal Lecturer in Communication at De Montfort University in Leicester, England. Since retiring from teaching, I have been a full time visual artist and writer."

Rusty Weston says, "Pandemic-induced shelter-in-place requirements have altered our lives, and our communities, in ways that not only reveal immediate disruptions but also hint at more permanent transformations too.

These "primary shapes" provide a visual clue to structural changes impacting San Francisco’s Mission district—a microcosm of larger issues across America.

Highlights -
In June, a photo called Cocktail Hour from my series Cerrado was a finalist in FOCUS Photo LA’s Summer 2020 event. A group show slated for the Elizabeth Houston Gallery in NYC has been put on hold pending the shutdown.  In January, a photo called Hesitation from his series Unrealized earned first place in an L.A. Photo Curator competition called “No Happy Accidents.”  A triptych from Game Faces, a documentary-style look at social video gamers, appeared in the Bay Area Photographers Collective 20th Anniversary show at the Harvey Milk Photo Center in October 2019. In 2019, work from his series Unrealized appeared in a juried show at the Black Box Gallery in Portland, Oregon. In April 2019, four images from the series were featured in a group show at KG+, in Kyoto, Japan."

Rusty Weston is a fine arts photographer and content creator in San Francisco, Ca. He began studying photography as a teen and had a photo published in a San Francisco newspaper before he graduated from journalism school. Weston is a member of the Bay Area Photographers Collective.

APEX by Samantha Schwann
(Click on image for larger view)

Samantha Schwann says, "Located around the ocean are special areas of such significance that their protection has a measurable effect on global ocean health and are sometimes referred to as Hope Spots.

These areas may be large or small, but contain an important feature such as: migration highways, areas of spectacular diversity, high concentrations of at-risk or endangered species, reproduction zones, or an unusual ecological feature.

Current science indicates 30% of the world’s oceans to be protected in order to absorb the demands placed upon it by 7.5 billion people, yet today less than 3% receives full sanctuary.  A healthy ocean provides over 50% of our fresh oxygen, contributes to our fresh water supply, is a renewable food source, and is paramount to global economy.

We are an ocean planet, and overfishing, climate change, plastic, and noise pollution are taking a visible and measurable toll.

Images are selections from a three-year, ongoing photographic project documenting areas of significant oceanic importance, with conservation statuses ranging from the largest marine preserve in North America, to heavily targeted areas with no current protection."

Samantha Schwann is an underwater photographic artist whose work concentrates on ecologically unique areas of the ocean, in a contemplative approach to an increasingly important global conversation.

She began diving at the age of fifteen in the emerald green waters surrounding Vancouver Island, Canada, igniting a curiosity and passion for the ocean.

Her artistic background was in sculpture prior to an introduction to photography in 2010.

Schwann’s images shed the constraints of the underwater environment, inviting the viewer to share in the curiosity of the ocean and the range of events and subjects which present themselves. Interested in images with a minimal aesthetic, her work frequently incorporates elements of transience and impermanence.

DANGEROUS ORB by Sonya Tanae Fort
(Click on image for larger view)

Sonya Tanae Fort says, "I have always had an appreciation for photography especially black and white images. However, I probably would never have picked up a camera if it were not for my nephew Jo’Rai.

I ventured into photography in 2013 when he refused to do his high school senior yearbook portraits unless I photographed him. My background is in graphic and web design. I had no previous photography experience yet, he was convinced that I could do it. He said: “You can do it! I have faith in you. I’m telling you, you’ve got this auntie.” I did not want to disappoint my nephew so I did some research on portrait shooting, borrowed a co-worker’s camera, took him to a local park and captured his portraits. I was pleasantly surprised by the results but Jo’Rai was not. He said: “See, I knew you had it in you.” The rest as they say is history...

Shortly thereafter, I purchased my own camera and began practicing on family and friends. I spent the next few years absorbing everything I could about photography from various sources including other photographers who were gracious enough to share their decades of knowledge and experience with me.

In July of 2017, I opened S.Tanae Designs & Photography, my own graphic design and photography studio located in Stoughton, Massachusetts. In addition to commercial photography I enjoy capturing fine art images. In 2018 I became a member of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). PPA has provided me with countless opportunities, tools, and resources to continue my journey of growing as a photographer and becoming the best photographer I can possibly be.

As a photographer I am blessed with the ability to suspend and memorialize moments in time. Those moments then become part of history so I strive to capture the very essence of each sentient being, inanimate object or landscape that I photograph. I tell their stories in the form of images.

My portraits are a glimpse into the subject’s personality and the raw emotion that they are feeling in a particular moment. With my still life photos, I try to convey how the mundane and ordinary can become something unique and extraordinary from my perspective.

Landscape and wildlife photography allows me to express my love and appreciation for the beauty and wonderment of creation. In all genres of photography, my mission is to create timeless, thought-provoking photographs that I hope will leave an indelible legacy around the world."

Sudeshna Banks says, "A camera can be just as powerful as an artists paintbrush. When we look at a painting, we have already accepted the fact that the artist is an interpreter of what we know as reality.

With photographs, it is different. The camera mirrors the reality. It is the photographer’s intention or vision which transforms that reality for the viewer as  he or she looks at that image. The captured scene escapes the boundary of reality into artistic expression.

I strive to create images that are able to achieve that.

UNTITLED 3 by Swen Bernitz
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Swen Bernitz says, "The untitled images are part of the series "Point and Line to Plane".

In 1926, Wassily Kandinsky published his theoretical thoughts on painting in the Bauhaus book "Point and Line to Plane", a key text for understanding abstraction. During this time, he taught as a master at the Bauhaus, including in the preliminary course "Analytical Drawing".

His analytical drawing lessons, in which students abstracted self-arranged still lifes based on the basic forms of circle, square, triangle and rhombus, were intended to teach students the ability to use abstraction as the basis for independent, synthetic design as well as an understanding of abstract art as an evolutionary step in the history of art and humanity.

During the Dessau Bauhaus period, he lived with his wife Nina in one of the Masters' Houses in Burgkuehner Allee 59/61 (today Friedrich-Ebert-Alle). "Kandinsky had a tremendously creative phase in Dessau, perhaps even the most productive phase of his entire life," writes Nina Kandinsky in her memoirs.

The photo series shows the architecture of the Bauhaus buildings in Dessau in the abstract, geometric art style of Kandinsky 100 years after the founding of the Bauhaus, referring to the illustrations in his Bauhaus book and teaching materials."
