GRASPING by Emily Watrous
(Click on image for larger view)

These photos are zoomed-in snapshots of Emily Watrous' childhood with multiple people who have been important in her life.

Hands are the one of the few things that are a constant in life, they're with you since birth, help you navigate the world around you while you explore and allow you to connect with the people in your life.

Bio:
Emily is a 22-year-old college student working towards a Liberal Arts degree from Turners Falls, Massachusetts.

She started photography in high school doing landscapes and nature photography and was immediately hooked on  expressing herself through a camera lens then found that portraiture and ethereal-styled photos sparked her creativity even more.

She hopes to continue with photography after graduating this spring.

Erica Martin says, 'In 'Home Fires', I photograph myself and my children in my childhood home.

The location at first glance would seem to be a dream house, but ghosts of violent memory share space with unexpected domestic scenes. With these portraits, I orchestrate the balance between the invisable, past and visible present.

CATCHING WIND by Eric Davidove
(Click on image for larger view)

Eric Davidove says, "I live in Northern California which has recently suffered unprecedented fierce fires, smoke filled skies and some of the world’s unhealthiest air.

The entire West Coast has simultaneously experienced record breaking heat waves alongside the deadly COVID pandemic. In those rare moments when the air is considered healthy, I enjoy going to less crowded outdoor locations where there is ample space for social distancing.

The kite park is one of my favorite destinations.  While there, I am able to watch people temporarily forget their daily fears, anxieties and isolation.  This experience lifts my spirits and hopes. It also creates unique opportunities for me to photograph their spontaneous joy.

I am a California native street photographer who currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area, and started taking photography seriously after finding myself unemployed in March 2015.  My time spent as a street mime came in handy, giving me the ability to anticipate street moments and be there with my camera as they happen, and to take photos without being noticed or upsetting people.  The most important thing is that I am having fun and learning something new. Let’s see where this new passion leads me.

Career Highlights:
During 2020, I was a finalist in 11 juried photography competitions, the recipient of 5 awards, and published in 8 books and/or magazines."

UP THE HILL by Katie Golobic
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Katie Golobic says, "The camera bears witness to the light and shadows that follow the 5 of us each day. It grants me permission to mourn the passage of time—raising children is so fleeting. I am loving and hating this very season. Loving and hating this very Saturday morning. Loving and hating this voyage of motherhood. This is the paradox: I wish the banal away, yet I am preserving it, storing it up to revisit later.

While I am detached in the present moment, I am still one with the camera. I pause, and observe who my children are and wonder what gifts they will carry with them into the world. Although I have carefully placed them into the frame, they have freedom to be who they are called to be.

These walls, covered in crayon, show written testimony of their existence. I order and record their eccentric gestures, frenetic energies, and perhaps, childhood wonderment. I am making a book of years in monochrome. This is my love letter to our children, the ones that are here and the ones who have been lost.

Bio
It seemed like a cool thing, to wear a camera around my neck through the halls of high school. Ever the introvert, the camera granted me access to social situations. Now, mothering four children in Iowa, it grants me an escape from the confines of motherhood. I document life in its equally conventional and remarkable forms. I am a photographer quietly observing the imperfect gift of our family life."

BACK TO SCHOOL by Katie Shaw
(Click on image for larger view)

Katie Shaw says, "This past year has been a troubling and scary time for our children as they try to understand how their world can suddenly shut down and everyday activities like school or playing at the park can be deadly. I've thought about how kids have dealt with these realities and wondered how it will affect them as they grow older.

My submissions represent different ways to view this childhood from the sadness of seeing our parks closed with barriers to an imagined ad for back to school fashion in what feels like an apocalyptic world. The pool image represents the innocence of childhood in the one place many children were able to play last summer - at the local pool with a Covid-friendly sign-up sheet for attendance.

I've always loved capturing the whimsical side of life and hope to make the viewer smile, think, and question the ordinary with these images.

Bio
I began working as a photojournalist for local newspapers in Memphis, Tenn. I eventually opened a portrait business focusing on lifestyle portraiture which I still have today, now based in Asheville, NC. But I've always loved creating fine art images and capturing documentary-style photos and continue to do so. I'm also signed with Arcangel Creative Images providing photos for book covers."

FISH by Katie Sprankle
(Click on image for larger view)

Katie Sprankle says, "“Meandering” follows a conceptual route, displayed as an investigation of childhood snapshots submerged in water. The water captures the fluidity and motion of the childhood-self, winding downstream. The hand reaches for what it cannot hold onto. In the end, childhood identity is fleeting."

Katie Sprankle is a student photographer, currently studying at Greenfield Community College (GCC), in western Massachusetts.

She attended Northfield Mount Hermon for high school, where she gravitated towards the visual arts, winning The Joseph Allen Art Prize in 2014 and creating the cover for the Mandala Art and Literary Magazine in 2015.

She found her passion for photography a few years later when she took an introductory course to photography with Nick Meyer at GCC. She has continued her photography studies with Joan O’Beirne and is interested in pursuing a graduate degree in photography in the future.

BEACH RUNNER by Lee Smith
(Click on image for larger view)

Lee Smith says, “I am one of those photographers who never shoots with a series in mind and, therefore, I am constantly amazed how often disassociated shots suddenly coalesce to create unexpected “ad hoc” series.”

As I reviewed images for this collection, I was taken back to my childhood when life was simple, free, and innocent.  When light, place and action worked in harmony to create moments that I so clearly (albeit slightly faded) remember to this day - long lazy afternoons, beach time, daydreaming, secret forts and imaginary high stakes adventures…

I hope that these images will tease you, as they have done with me, to think back, to remember, those times when we were all kids."

After years of shooting high profile television commercials, Lee Smith traded truckloads of movie making equipment for an iPhone.  These days he shoots quickly with unencumbered simplicity and instinctual framing. His subjects vary from architecture to landscape, portrait to minimal, still-life to abstract.

His approach has been influenced by the masters of advertising still photography, and shaped by the style of the classic film cinematographers, who he has had had the good fortune of working with.

At the moment Lee has been been experimenting with de-composing color and the dimensional meaning that it can add to virtually any subject.

Lee splits his time between Connecticut and Cape Cod.

ANYWHERE BUT HERE by Lisa L. Peters
(Click on image for larger view)

Lisa L Peter’s says "I see children with one foot in their worlds and the other in ours.

There’s a dissonance which transcends the reality to which we insist they adapt. For me, there is no delineation between timelines, no separation between real and make believe. My objective is to capture these moments before they are lost and forgotten. And my reward is to reconnect with that uninhibited state of being fully in the moment, timeless, guileless, and truly alive."

Lisa L Peters is a Los Angeles based photographer and writer. She seeks to find the unique beauty in everyday moments. Telling stories is her calling and her passion.

Lisa often blends elements of digital collage and manipulation into her photographic work. But her first love remains down & dirty street photography. Applying the rule of “less-is-more”, she constantly explores the juxtaposition between her street work and minimalism, resulting in highly evocative images.

BREAKAWAY by Liz Albert
(Click on image for larger view)

Liz Albert says, "Family photographs document reality…or do they? Revisiting these images years later, we often project what we want to remember, whether it really happened that way or not. In this project I have gathered anonymous photographs of family experiences, and by selecting and pairing images in a different context, give new meaning to both the images and the relationships within the frames.

I began this project by taking a closer look at my own family slides. In the neatly arranged metal boxes were scores of pictures from family vacations, birthday parties and playing “dress up”. I soon realized, however, that although I had a strong connection to these images, they were not “good” photographs – making them only interesting to my family and myself.

Putting these aside, I wanted to look deeper into the family archives of others. I turned to eBay where I’ve continued to peruse thousands of individual slides from the 1950’s-1970’s, acquiring those which I find to be emotionally and visually compelling. What I’ve found there is the prevalence of images of vacations, train travel, and women (often nudes), along with a relative lack of diversity.

Pairing these pictures together and making them large scale allows me to be the director of my own Hitchcock movie – selecting scenes which, combined with others, suggest a story line, which is evocative and cinematic.

These pairings often use humor to highlight the struggle and loneliness of managing society’s expectations while meeting one’s personal needs and desires; a feeling further emphasized by the juxtaposition of individuals in separate frames, or worlds.

Many of the characters are women, venturing off on their own, whether it be the desert or the mountains, leaving behind the responsibilities of what’s happening in the adjacent frame; both physically and emotionally. It’s uncertain, however, if they will ever get to where they are going – or even if they know where that place is.

There is a subversive pleasure in working with other people’s family memories and manipulating their meaning by changing the context in which they are viewed. Ironically, even though I decided not to use my own family slides for this project, in the end, the individuals in these photographs reflect feelings from my own childhood as well as present day family dynamics. Which just goes to show – we are always close to home even when we are far away."

Liz Albert is a photographic artist who has exhibited her work in group shows throughout the United States including, The Griffin Museum of Photography, The Photographic Resource Center, The Photographic Center Northwest and The Houston Center for Photography. Online and print features include: Fisheye Magazine, Fotoroom, Fraction Magazine, Lenscratch, Analog Forever and Ain’t Bad, as well as the French weekly magazine, Courrier International. In addition, her work was in the national exhibition of The Fence 2018, touring seven cities throughout the US and Canada. Her ”Family Fictions” series was recently featured in a solo exhibition at The Danforth Museum of Art, in Framingham, Massachusetts and at the Revela’t Contemporary Analog Photography Festival in Barcelona, Spain. She holds a BFA from the University of Michigan, an MFA in photography from Maryland Institute College of Art, and a post-baccalaureate in teaching from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She is originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan and lives with her family in Belmont, Massachusetts.

UNTITLED 1 by Lucy Reback
(Click on image for larger view)

Lucy Reback says, "I drive down the dirt road to my mother’s house. The potholes have gotten deeper and more aggressive in welcoming me home.

The house looks more or less the same, except the front door has been painted red. I leave my camera in the car, not to give away my reasons for being here.

Twitching legs while we slept, legs that didn’t take up space. Snores and mumbles. Maroon uniforms; crests and collars not quite white.

I stand in the front doorway, hesitant to pass the threshold. They amble about the kitchen, nonchalant and confident in faded swim team tee-shirts from middle school. They have refined their movement, limbs no longer a nuisance. Their faces have shifted; longer noses and thinner cheeks. Their expressions too, the perfected nuances of the glare. I am reminded of the changes that happen while we sleep.  We wake up with growing pains, our muscles are stretched tight and we walk out of our bedrooms taller.

Our mother fights with the pastor; I am horrified and humiliated. That will be the last time we attend bible study. Our youngest admits that she prays in secret. Unsure, whether to believe or whether she’s allowed to believe.

The sun shifts positions and through the window, light lands perfectly on the hairs of her arm; an image. I pull the lens board upward and click the shutter wide open. Moving underneath the dark cloth, the edges pulled tight around my chin. Camouflaged behind the camera, I am allowed to stare

She collects dead birds to paint. They lay around the house, blue feathers turn grey, and paintings of flower bouquets hang on the walls instead.

Focus falls on the hands; the fingers wear rings now and the nails that are no longer left bitten and bleeding. The focus moves upward; the nose has begun to sculpt an arch that is all too familiar. Darker eyebrows, and plucked too. I stare at the innermost corner of her eye, breath held, willing the focus to cooperate. If they’re good subjects, or if you’re a comforting photographer; they will allow you to look.

These days, the birds collected on the mantle frighten me less.  I understand the fascination with being allowed to stare. Without binoculars, without tiptoeing around the yard, without holding your breath as to not scare the bluebird off the branch; my mother immortalizes the bird on the mantle, and in doing so asks us to look."

Lucy Reback is an Upstate New York born photographer. Working primarily with the large format view camera, Lucy’s work revolves around family and the ways in which the camera complicates the mythology of family; an articulation of photographs as a performance of being on the ‘inside’. After graduating with her BA from Bard College, Annadale-On-Hudson in 2020, Lucy lives, works, and photographs in Athens, GA.

CHILDHOOD by Madison Casagranda
(Click on image for larger view)

Madison Casagranda says, "An observation of childhood gives us the opportunity to see the world through the lenses of simplicity, beauty, and being untouched by racial or other biases.

As an effort towards addressing the realities of racism and acknowledging that they are bigger than ourselves, I hope to open the conversation and learn from the children around us about how simple things really can be when we have more open minds, the willingness to confront uncomfortable truths, and a truer, more empathetic understanding of each other’s experiences.

These images are part of a larger ongoing series called The Black Stories Project, which can be viewed at https://www.theblackstoriesproject.com/.

Bio: My name is Madison Casagranda and I am a BYU photography and art education student. I was born in Logan, Utah and have lived in Okinawa, Japan, Hamden, CT, Seattle, WA, and Provo. I enjoy the outdoors, traveling, trying new foods, and making art. I’m currently in my last semester of classes before student teaching. My time here at BYU has given me many opportunities to explore a vast array of art forms, and especially to dive into alternative photographic processes. I love the hands-on nature of the darkroom and the history of photography. I’ve also enjoyed learning about other hands-on art forms like bookbinding, printmaking, and ceramics; I would love to continue to explore those as well as continue making photographs in my personal work and as a future art teacher."

FUN AND GAMES by Mara Zaslove
(Click on image for larger view)

Mara Zaslove says, "My photographs are entries to my soul, connecting the intangible to the tangible through light, time and memory.

Using natural light to capture what I feel in my heart and my eyes, taking photographs has become as essential to me as breathing air, and in some ways, has evolved into my sixth sense. I thrive on creating visual conversations that embrace childhood, life on the street and how “human beings” impact the natural world.

As my photography has progressed, I have been drawn to capture the human stories set in natural environments. Either candid or anticipated, I seek to convey a uniqueness particular to each individual that invites the viewer to explore their own life's path with that of the subject documented."

Mara Zaslove is a Los Angeles based photographer who thrives on creating visual conversations that highlight the diversity of the human spirit, the universality of aging and the beauty of the natural world. Growing up with a father who was a fine artist, Mara was surrounded by his work and sensibilities. She often finds herself mirroring his visual style.

She holds a BA from the University of California, Berkeley, a Teaching Credential from U.C.L.A. and a Masters in Counseling and Guidance.  She became a Licensed Marriage, Family and Child Therapist.  At the close of her practice, Mara began a new chapter and wholeheartedly, embraced her passion for photography.

DAKOTA WITH BUBBLES by Mariette Allen
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Mariette Allen says of her series, 'Anna and Texas', "As a New Yorker who has always lived on the East Coast, I wasn’t at ease when I visited my late husband’s family, in Seabrook, Texas, a suburb between Houston and Galveston.

Although part  of a large, close knit family, my husband was the only one to leave Texas  for a life on his own, first in the Foreign Service, then to an artistic and intellectual community in New York City.

It has taken me a long time to evolve from being bored on the visits to Ken’s family. The photographs I used to take were just snapshots of the family, often group photographs because they would all get together for certain events such as my mother-in-law’s birthday. About eight years ago, after many visits to Seabrook, I had an epiphany.  I realized that when I started to get more personally involved with individual family members,  I realized that when I started to get more personally involved with individual family members, I became inspired to photograph in a way that would bring the generations of resilience of this family to life.

In the process of spending more time with the Allens,  my late husband's family, I came to know Anna, one of my sister-in-law's granddaughters. Anna, who is the mother of the two children in these photographs, grew up in Palestine, Texas.

As a young child, she had the highest score in math and spelling of all the children in the county, but in spite of her gifts, her life has been extremely painful and traumatic from early childhood on.  An unwed mother, Anna has raised her daughters, Kylie and Dakota, alone. The children are bright, athletic, independant, curious, and resilient, especially considering the number of times they have moved from place to place in rural Texas.

Many of the children I have known live on the East Coast, and come from privileged backgrounds. They expect to get a lot of attention, to be free to disagree, to go to after school programs and summer camps. Some seem to lose their curiosity early, some become jaded, and anxious.

I wonder when or if this will happen to Kylie and Dakota, now 8 and 6 years old. Will their lack of privilege keep them energized, making them realize that it is up to them to succeed? Or, will they follow in their mother's footsteps, becoming overweight, pregnant, and evangelical? Anna is a loving mother. Perhaps that's all that's needed."

THE PORTRAIT by Marsha Guggenheim

Marsha Guggenheim says of the series, 'Without a Map', "My Mother’s death was too monumental for me to face or to understand at the age of ten.

In making this series, I have uncovered the pain and fear from those experiences and found some peace.  Combining old family pictures with images I have created from my memories, I tell my story.  Without a Map is about loss and healing."

Bio

A NEW YORK AROMA by Michael Cohen
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Michael S Cohen says, "I think it was Art Linkletter that said “kids say the darnedest things”, but it’s even more true that kids emote the most amazing things.  So honest, so unencumbered.  A gesture or a glance, filled with emotion that comes from deep down.  It can be funny, sad or just from the soul, but kids give us what we really seek: the truth."

Michael was born and raised in the Boston area and still lives there some of the time. His camera has taken him to some of the most photogenic spots on the globe and he is as likely to be found in an airport lounge as his living room, though not so much this past year!

Michael’s first real photographic experience was through the lens of a Minolta SRT-101 where he learned photography as a journalist and a darkroom rat.  That early work of capturing a moment influences his style today.  His images have won numerous awards, are shown in galleries and hang in homes across the country.
In the advertising world for 35 years, his work is now making images and doting on grandchildren.

Michael enjoys imparting what he’s learned to others.  He conducts workshops and seminars in photographic technique and has been told he can make the exposure triangle actually understandable.  He enjoys photographing with others as the creative energies are strengthened through shared experiences.

He says, “The bottom line is, I love to shoot.  Whether it’s around the corner or around the world there are photographs to be made everywhere.  The camera is a great introduction to the people I meet and it breaks down any language barrier almost instantly.  Beautiful scenes of nature can be captured; precious moments frozen in time.  We all move through our space in the world so fast that we miss some of the most miraculous moment around us.  The camera slows me down.  It encourages observation.  And when I’m lucky, I get to be in the right place at the right time to capture that sliver of a moment through the lens.  For me, photography is the never ending search for those slivers.”

A highlight of my career happens every time one of my images resonates with a viewer.  I seek nothing more than that connection.

LEAP by Nancy Kaye
(Click on image for larger view)

Nancy Kaye says, "To freeze a moment in time is the unique ability of a camera and of great interest to me in making photographs—to capture fleeting facial expressions or body language, a passing quality of light, or a transient juxtaposition.

Through photography I combine my interests in art and sociology.  In capturing my observations of commonplace, small moments—un-posed and unaltered—I strive to reveal universally shared emotions and human behaviors.

A photograph, in the short term, can capture a slice of life and, over time, offer a perspective on the past. Of particular importance to me is that my images express a distinct point of view that informs, illuminates, or evokes emotion—sometimes with humor.

Children, and their actions in public spaces of the adult world, is an ongoing theme in my photography. I strive to convey, through candid images, my fascination with their uninhibited abandon and unguarded joy. Given that childhood is an intensely impressionable time, I often wonder about their perceptions of the grown-up world and the inevitable impact of societal norms."

Nancy Kaye is a photographer, educator, and curator in Los Angeles, previously based in New York and London. The core of her professional background is in photojournalism, having worked regularly for The Washington Post, The New York Times, Associated Press, and a variety of other news outlets. Her photos have been published in numerous magazines and books, and exhibited in juried shows.

Her portrait of author Ralph Ellison is in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, and other portraits she’s taken have been included in other books and in HBO documentaries.

She has taught a range of photography classes for over 15 years. In 2020 she created Capture This Moment, a series of photo workshops to document life during the pandemic, and curated the culminating work into online group exhibitions for American Jewish University’s Whizin Center. She has served as a juror for photo competitions and is the treasurer on the board of the LA chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP).

PANACHE by Natalie Obermaier
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Natalie Obermaier says, "I find my muse behind the mystery of youth. I approach this muse cautiously, like an anthropologist lost, but hunting, in a suburban backyard with a snaking hose and retreating black dog.  I place my subject into the light and then direct by not directing.

My method is more of a witnessing-- my technique more of an intuition. If my Hasselblad is conspicuous, spontaneity is lost and the image becomes crafted. Instead I stand waiting for the genius in them that shows me that essence of innocence.  An innocence that is really not so simple.  I am collecting flashes of vulnerability, captured in a moment, that reveal in us an ironic relation to a child who, unknowingly, understands all that we seek to discover.

Living in Los Angeles has imbued in me the idea that every patch of sunlight can be a stage.  The characters, though, have to be chosen carefully, and while mine is an instinctual casting process, I connect to them via presence of place and faith that the story will come.  The overabundance of sun tortures one who wants clouds for depth and tone, subtlety and threat. But grass will grow up between the cracks in a sunblasted sidewalk. If I’m lucky, if I’m ready, if my intuition serves me – then I unveil its truths."

After graduating magna cum laude from Philadelphia’s Drexel University with a degree in Photography, L.A. based artist Natalie Obermaier moved to Seattle where she worked alongside acclaimed photographer, Jock Sturges. Working in the darkroom five days a week for three years under his guidance, she mastered the craft of black and white photographic printing, while also acting as his studio manager and model.

Following this intensive immersion into large format black and white photography, she traveled extensively, discovering her own voice as an artist. Her early bodies of work in black and white film are soulful and classic, showing a natural and deep connection with the people she photographs.

In addition to her black and white work, in 2012 the artist began taking a photograph every day for 365 days of the year, using multiple formats, from film to iPhone. The results were printed and exhibited at the end of each year for three consecutive years as immersive installations.

Currently Obermaier has turned her attention to hand-cut collage, sourcing her materials primarily from the glossy pages of women’s fashion magazines. When she isn’t lighting sets for Mark Seliger, David La Chapelle and other commercial photographers, she continues to explore her own visual vocabulary and exhibit her work around the country.

STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER by Pere Ibanez
(Click on image for larger view)

These portraits are part of Pere Ibañez's
new photo series titled after his late father, Pedro. The collection comprises different techniques applied over digital and analog photography, from collage to digital and acrylic painting.

After the unexpected loss of his father this body of work became a way to channel the grief and cope, with the aim to recover, deconstruct and reinterpret old moments that feel personal but that they can be applied to anybody since they represent universal experiences of family, childhood, parenthood, moments that the viewer can relate to, especially in a year where we have lost so many people around the world.

Barcelona native and Beijing resident for the last 14 years, Pere Ibañez has earned international recognition for his emotionally-charged artwork. Drawing inspiration from his background studies in cinema, his images seek to explore aspects of human nature that often go underplayed and trivialised.  Instead, through photography and poetry, Ibañez magnifies both the falls and ascensions of the human experience through his own lens.

Pere Ibañez’s works have been published around the globe and has received international awards and honour mentions while being featured in exhibitions and publications across the US, Asia and Europe.

Having explored themes of domestic violence, societal pressure on the individual, racism,  homophobia and most recently collaborating with Chinese NGO CandleX.cn in a Bipolar Disorder Awareness Campaign, his new works take a more personal approach deconstructing and celebrating the life of his late father.

FORGOTTEN SPACE A KID WITH GRANDMOTHER by Phanuphan Kitsawaeng
(Click on image for larger view)

Phanuphan Kitsawaeng says, "It has been known that billionaire people own most of the world’s wealth; however, in Thailand cast is simply higher. 91.7% of Thai people have wealth under $10000, and 7.5% in between the $10000-100000 band. Moreover, 1% of Thai(billionaire) people own more than 67% of the country’s wealth. In another word, there are no countries in the world where the richest control more than 50% of the country’s wealth. As a resource, it emphasizes that Thailand is one of the most unequal countries in the world.

In this series Forgotten Space, I want to highlight the inequality system in Thailand by documenting kids with their playground, emphasizing the problem that Thai government always disregards."

Phanuphan Kitsawaeng (Mark) is a photographer from Thailand, currently living in Los Angeles. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Film from RSU (Rangsit University in Thailand).

With a strong background in commercial photography working for Thailand's largest entertainment company, GMM (Grammy), his images are technically skillful and evocative. After honing his craft in the entertainment world, Mark turned the gaze of his camera awards underrepresented communities to bring forth greater good.
“My motivation in photography is to explore the isolated places around Asain (and the world) to use my photographs as a speaker for those people who are voiceless.”

He is presently an MFA student in Photography at The Photo Arts Conservatory of NYFA (The New York Film Academy). He hopes to work with UNESCO, or Unicef after he graduates, and continue to use his camera to bring forth global awareness and change for the better.

CLASS TRIP by Rita Nannini
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Rita Nannini says, "These images are from my  ongoing project “First Person Mother” which seeks to document what motherhood looks like through the eyes of the mother.

Artists have been focussed on depicting mother and child for centuries. When I became pregnant in late 1985, I began photographing the changes in my body.  I was determined to photograph the birth of both my sons and my first look at their faces.  From there, came moments of joy, sadness and fear both in my children and myself.

I have documented their ascent from babyhood to adulthood and what I consider moments of discovery of the world around them. I will continue this project until they no longer are willing subjects or I can no longer see the light."

Rita Nannini became a photographer the year she lived in Madrid without a camera. Originally drawn to the medium as a vehicle to capture otherness, her personal work focuses on the vernacular.

Her solo exhibitions have featured projects that include a small enclave of ethno-economically specialized farmers in NJ, motherhood in the first person, and the micro-landscape of her own backyard Princeton.

Rita studied photography at the Corcoran School of Art, the International Center of Photography and the New School/Parsons and is currently based in Brooklyn, NY.

LAST WEEK OF MY MOTHER'S LIFE 2 by Ruth Lauer Manenti
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Ruth Lauer Manenti says, "These pictures were taken of my mother the last week of her life. She grew up in Berlin in a wealthy family of artists and intellectuals, with sixteen servants and two nannies, one to braid the right side and the other to braid the left side of her hair.

My mother said my grandmother was the best dressed woman in all of Berlin. She often recounted how her mother would come to say goodnight whilst on the way to the opera or some such glamorous event wearing a long sequined dress with dangling diamond earrings.

Supposedly Max Beckman painted a portrait of my grandmother’s sister Cecelia. The painting was lost or stolen, and Cecelia did not survive the war. In 1939 my mother was put on a train by herself to Holland with two potatoes in her overcoat pocket.

Throughout most of my life my mother reminisced about the pre war days; the white asparagus, the hollandaise sauc. Yet starving for 6 years was an experience my mother never forgot. It was always right there in the forefront of her mind. On a number of occasions when I took my parents out for Indian food and went wild over the buffet, my mom looked at all the food I had brought to the table and said, “Ruth, we starved.”

At the end of my mother’s life she spoke more of her time in England as a refugee and less about her prior upbringing. From 1939-45, my mother, age 10-16 and separated from her parents lived in countless places. Sometimes she was shifted within a few days, while other stays were considerably longer. Some of her hosts were incredibly kind and others only housed the children in order to get the small amount of money that the government provided.

In some cases, my mom said she was like an unpaid employee there to clean, cook and look after the farm animals, quite an adjustment from her life in Berlin. She often said that what stabilized her during that chaotic time was that she would do her homework for Tuesday even when she knew that Monday would be her last day at that particular school.

Throughout the war years she said she met many different people and at the age of 89 she said she remembered all those people. She said that that experience taught her that anyone she would ever meet or be introduced to would be important.

I always wanted to photograph my mother. I would follow her around with my camera in hand, but she would always put up a fight and eventually I would back down. Therefore, it was amazing that in the last week of her life, she was so peaceful that my photographing didn’t bother her in the least. She smiled, nodded her head in approval, and let me take these pictures.

My mother was also an artist. She wrote, painted, drew and had a darkroom and an easel set up in the laundry room in our basement. She had extraordinary talent and worked steadily throughout her life, yet her number one role was to take care of her family. Sadly, she left behind a legacy of unwanted, unpublished, basically unknown yet remarkable work. I realize, now that she has passed away, that part of my determination as an artist is to reward her for her efforts and to create some kind of continuum.

Bio:
I live in a cabin in the woods in the Catskill Mountains of New York. My background is in painting and drawing. Fifteen years ago I inherited a K.B. Canham large format camera from someone I greatly admire. I taught myself how to use the camera and gradually accomplished what I was striving for in drawing and painting, through photography.

My mother was also an artist. She had a wealth of talent and worked steadily throughout her life, yet her number one role was to take care of her family. Sadly, she left behind a legacy of unwanted, unpublished, unknown work. I realize, now that she has passed, that part of my determination as an artist is to reward her for her efforts and to create a continuum.

Since breaking my neck in a car crash at the age of twenty, I have developed a strong spiritual life and practice out of which I have adapted a way of life simpler and more ritualistic than I had known before. I received an MFA in drawing and painting from the Yale School of Art in 1994, where I later taught."

MY FATHER'S SIGNATURE, MY MOTHER'S HANDS by Samantha Brinkley
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Samantha Brinkley says, "In 1997, when I was 2 years old, my father died of Hodgkin's disease.

Because of how young I was, I have no memories of him. Everything I know about him has been passed on to me; stories from my mother and sister, paintings of his on our walls, old photos and videos, and so on.

Most things I have heard about grief all involve having known the person before they died. I have struggled to find a way to process the grief of someone I never truly knew. Now that I have moved out of my childhood home and my mother packs it up to be sold, I find myself exploring the role my father has played in our family's history, both while he was and was not alive. I am investigating the relationship of myself to this house, to my mother and siblings, to my mother's partner, and with myself."

Samantha Brinkley is a digital-focused emerging photographer living and working in Rhinebeck, New York. She recently graduated from SUNY Purchase with a Bachelor of Science in Visual Arts and a minor in Art History. She was recently an intern at The Center for Photography at Woodstock.

MY BROTHERS KEEPER by Sonya Tanae Fort
(Click on image for larger view)

Sonya Tanae Fort says, "I have always had an appreciation for photography especially black and white images.

However, I probably would never have picked up a camera if it were not for my nephew Jo’Rai. I ventured into photography in 2013 when he refused to do his high school senior yearbook portraits unless I photographed him.

My background is in graphic and web design. I had no previous photography experience yet, he was convinced that I could do it. He said: “You can do it! I have faith in you. I’m telling you, you’ve got this auntie.” I did not want to disappoint my nephew so I did some research on portrait shooting, borrowed a co-worker’s camera, took him to a local park and captured his portraits. I was pleasantly surprised by the results but Jo’Rai was not. He said: “See, I knew you had it in you.” The rest as they say is history.

Shortly thereafter, I purchased my own camera and began practicing on family and friends. I spent the next few years absorbing everything I could about photography from various sources including other photographers who were gracious enough to share their decades of knowledge and experience with me. In 2017, I opened my own graphic design and photography studio, S. Tanae Designs & Photography, located in Stoughton, Massachusetts."

As a photographer I am blessed with the ability to suspend and memorialize moments in time. Those moments then become part of history so I strive to capture the very essence of each sentient being, inanimate object or landscape that I photograph. I tell their stories in the form of images. My portraits are a glimpse into the subject’s personality and the raw emotion that they are feeling in a particular moment.

With my still life photos, I try to convey how the mundane and ordinary can become something unique and extraordinary from my perspective. Landscape and wildlife photography allows me to express my love and appreciation for the beauty and wonderment of creation. In all genres of photography, my mission is to create timeless, thought-provoking photographs that I hope will leave an indelible legacy around the world

FIRST LOVE by Susan Kaufer Carey
(Click on image for larger view)

Susan Kaufer Carey is a Los Angeles based visual artist who uses photography and mixed media to tell stories of identity and reclamation. Whether analog or digital, nudes, conceptual, street or photo encaustics her work explores reclamation of authenticity, vulnerability, creativity and humanity. Despite our vast differences, her work reveals the common threads that unite us all.

Susan got her BA in theater at Bennington College, then worked in New York City for fashion photographer Joel Brodsky where she honed her darkroom skills printing for the book Brodsky shot of Jim Morrison and the Doors. While living and working in Rome, Italy refining her work as a street photographer she earned her Italian Press Pass, moved back to her hometown of Los Angeles and opened a portrait studio specializing in fine art nudes, album covers, pregnancy and newborn portraits.

Susan’s work has been exhibited at The dnj Gallery, The Neutra Museum, Los Angeles Center of Photography, Los Angeles Photographers Association, LA Artcore, Art Share LA, Sparrow Gallery, A Smith’s Gallery, Black Box Gallery and A Photo Place Gallery. Her work is featured in the book California Love released in November 2020 and is held in private collections in the US and Rome, Italy.

BOILING RIVER CONTINENTAL DIVIDE by Susan Lirakis
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Susan Lirakis says, "I have been expressing myself through photography since I was 7 years old.

My work has been exhibited nationally and, in 2000, was recognized for artistic excellence through the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship Program and National Endowment for the Arts.

Over the years, I have worked in a camera shop, and as a photographer covering events, with images provided as gelatin silver prints.

I’ve participated in many exhibition opportunities, and have been juried into arts organizations including the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen. I served as my community’s arts education and artist-in-the-schools coordinator for two decades.

My work has been included in publications such as The Elements of Photography: Understanding and Creating Sophisticated Images, 2nd edition, Angela Faris-Belt (2012); Photo1, Katie Miller, (2012); Tricycle: The Buddhist Review; Form & Magic, Contemporary Vision with the Plastic Camera; The Sun Magazine; Shots; Lightleaks; New Hampshire Life magazine; NH Profiles magazine.

I believe in looking and I play with seeing. I have been making photographs, and using them as a means of expression, for over sixty years."
