Kate Pollard Hoffman says of her series, 'Skin', "As an artist, I am interested in change, growth, perception, and imagination.
I am fascinated with decontextualization and reconstruction, and the process of art moving fluidly between known and unknown realities.
This series examines backlit skin of fruits and vegetables - common and exotic, fresh and rotting, colorful and muted. I carefully remove the skins to unveil intricate textures, blemishes, colors, and patterns that take on new identities once removed from their original shape.
Skin that turns into a mysterious cavern. Skin that resembles beautiful satin sheets on an elegant bed. Skin that reveals a luminous lightning storm in a dark night sky. Skin that transforms into an underworld pool of solid, liquid, gas and plasma. These organic abstractions invite the viewer into the realm of fantasy - an imagined landscape, a dynamic world that transcends literal boundaries and proposes new narratives."

PLAYGROUND ART by Kathy Curtis Cahill
(Click on image for larger view)
(Click on image for larger view)
Kathy Curtis Cahill says of her work, "As a photographer, I view the world through an imaginary lens, always looking for a picture. I am particularly interested in the early years of childhood. Many of my past bodies of work has dealt directly with kids themselves, playing and reacting to the world around them, but using dolls as stand-ins for real children.
Now I find myself drawn to the objects that indicate play, but the children are not shown. It is a study of artifacts when I can find them, or scenes that suggest the nearby presence of children. So much of who we are as adults is formed by our experiences in theses formative years, and it is a subject that I will continue to find ways to photograph.
I grew up in a working class family in upstate New York, and like most photographers, have always been interested in the magic of the medium. I majored in art in high school as well as college. Although earning a degree in art education, I became involved in the entertainment industry after moving to Los Angeles. I settled into the Art Department as a Set Decorator, and worked for over 30 years in this capacity, in commercials, music videos, independent films, and television series.
I was nominated for an Emmy in 2001 for my work on the CBS series “Judging Amy”, and finished my career by retiring from ABC’s “Criminal Minds”. I began using my own photographs as set dressing, and after building a large collection of stock of photographs, started a business to license these images to other television and film productions.
Since retiring in 2011, I have pursued Fine Art Photography full time. I have had four solo shows in Los Angeles as well as participating in many juried shows around the country. I work out of two studios, one in Los Angeles and one in Morro Bay Ca.
Although I am interested in photographing many subjects, I have spent the last 3 years exploring individual identity. This has resulted in two bodies of work featuring dolls as avatars for children recreating moments from childhood, based on my own life. I also have a continued interest in decorating, but in other peoples work found in store widow displays.
Mannequins as avatars for who we are or who we should be, combined with novel settings remind me of my many years of recreating realistic environments for fake people to tell stories. I have two bodies of work based on this subject of cultural identity reflected in the world of commerce."

BORDER LINE by Magdeleine Ferru

(Click on image for larger view)
Magdéleine Ferru loves meeting people, exploring historic site, cities, national park, etc..., where she can learn about past & present, life style, and citizens’ habits, who they were, and who they became, how custom can be so different from then to now and how the society is influencing one’s own choices. Insatiable learner & traveler, curious about the big picture as much as of all those smaller things that get people going, she is in a constant « soif d’aventures et de connaissances.
She never ceases feeding her curiosity by traveling the world, discovering amazing places.
She likes mixing different styles : her Kennecott project mixes urban photo and documentary, diving into one of the biggest wood building of the world.
She is also working on a few years long project called "Identity", a reflection on each other's identity and the human body.
Here she presents a part of her work on ice and water : Glacier Art. Blue, white, cold, come closer, listen to the glacier whispering its song, merge yourself into its deepness, bubbling, melting, freezing. Natural art shaped with time and weather, discover those close up of a glacier and let your imagination wander; do you see a dancer, or may be a ghost ? it doesn't matter as long as what you see is lead by your dream…
The cycle of the water inspires me, for its movement, and continual changes, its always the same but in different shape, texture, form, i wanted to explore ice and see through it.
Magdéleine -JustMagd- is a french photographer, who, after studying photography in Montréal in 2002, has been traveling and trying to discover as much of the world as she could for the past 10 years. It is her exhibition "Tokyo dans mon Keitai" in Tokyo in 2009 (under the patronage of the French Ambassy) that makes her want to show more of her work. She, then gained self-confidence and obtained awards in different photo contests.
She attends a workshop "Traveling Photos" with Jacques Sierpinski in Toulouse, using each meeting, course, shops, etc...as a great opportunity to learn from experienced photographers.
In 2010, she decided to go back to school to learn graphic design, and got into a 5 month program in Montauban. Learning website building basics was part of the course, but what really caught her interest was studying layout, designing books or magazines. She did a 2 weeks internship at a design agency in Ibiza, and contributed as photographer/graphic designer to expat magazines in Seoul.
She keeps traveling feeling her urge to see the world and understand its inhabitant, working on personal projects.

Michael Wood says of his work, "I have been involved in photography for over 45 years, having first exhibited and published my work when I was 16. Most of my life’s work has been in media production with many years spent traveling around the world documenting events in video and stills for Prem Rawat.
After many years of shooting artistically for my own pleasure I decided in 2010 to start showing my work. Since then I have shown in many galleries in Southern California, and on-line as well.
I consider my photography to be a spectator sport in that the images are found, stumbled upon in an open ended visual walk-about. For me it’s less about creating pre-visualized imagery than it is about discovery and refinement. I shoot almost obsessively and practice my technique to the point where it becomes second nature. I shoot randomly, relying on my instincts, and find themes that are then developed into series.
I use traditional techniques for the most part, with little done to my pictures that couldn’t be done in a darkroom. My shooting tends to be minimalist as well, a single camera with a few manual focus prime lenses. I find that shooting this way creates an envelope where I focus more on the frame than the gear.
I find inspiration in many photographers and artists. The work of Minor White stands out to me as a sensibility that I connect with artistically and spiritually.
I have have several series that I add to and work on occasionally as the inspiration arises."

Michał Amerek says of his work, "I'm amateur photographer from Poland and I'm interested in the various aspects of the landscape, so that those that show the presence of man, objects removed from the context of time and space and abstract nature. I pay attention to the details, being imperceptible at first glance and the gaps that appear to be filled with object relationships or contact with the viewer. Often these are spontaneous and accidental encounters like these three submitted photos."

Nicole Harrington says of her work, " 'Tiny Thoughts of Grandeur' gives importance to forgotten minutia.
It cuts away the chaos of the world. By creating a quiet yet vast landscape out of diminutive objects it calms the mind. The world falls away and you enjoy a moment of peace in a tiny reality, creating a compassion for the neglected items.
Frozen glimpses to an unseen world I wish to enter. A window to a calm, quiet world without judgment, fears, or worries. A place where people and things can just be."
Nicole Harrington, who was born and raised in Nebraska, has enjoyed photography since childhood. Running around her grandmother's home with a 110 film camera taking pictures of the cats.
She, however, didn't fall in love with photography until her high school darkroom class. There, her wonderfully supportive teacher allowed Nicole to follow her own path.
After a few years away from photography, she felt something was missing and returned to shooting again while teaching English in South Korea; and the spark was reborn.
She found it was a way for her to explore the new culture she found herself becoming a part of. Upon returning to the states she began the study of photography at the New England School of Photography. She graduated in June of 2015. She specializes in black and white fine art and architectural photography.

HILLS BROTHERS COFFEE CAN 1936 by Paul Ivanushka

(Click on image for larger view)
Paul Ivanushka says if his work, "My work looks at the environment from often overlooked perspectives.
I focus on the beauty of the natural designs, patterns, textures and tonal ranges found in natural objects. Many people move through nature too fast and miss so many wonderful images and moments.
My goal is to find these overlooked images and moments in nature and share them with as many people as I can. It’s a challenge as Nature does not give herself up easily.
I anchor my landscapes with a human artifact or evidence of mankind's presence on this planet. But it always amazes me how great we humans are...and at the same time how insignificant our achievements become when put next to nature. Nature will always dominate…it will always endure."
Paul was born an Army brat at the West Point Military Academy and was raised in various cities across the United States where he was exposed to the diversities of both people and nature.
As a result of a trip to the Grand Canyon and inspired by the canyon photographs of the Kolb Brothers, Paul developed his first roll of film when he was ten years old. Since then exploring the outdoors has been a major portion of his growth and life.
After studying at Brooks Institute of Photography Paul spent most of his career in the printing industry learning and managing tone reproduction on high speed web offset presses.
Recently, Paul picked up a camera creating action portraits of horses and riders in various equine competitions. Paul now spends most of his free time shooting fine art landscapes with a large format camera.
Paul is a Software Business Analyst and currently resides in Inglewood, California.

Perry Mathews says of his work, "Restaurant settings in-between service comprise this series of monochrome photographs.
In this age of chasing after the newest and hottest chefs across the nation searching for that elusive transformative morsel it’s easy to overlook the setting and the detail that creates a special place.
These images hail from St. Augustine, FL; Savannah, GA; and Richmond, VA. All evoke a “calm before the storm” vibe. This in-between space allows an examination of what it takes to compose a memorable space that is so often ignored by adoring fans."
Perry Matthews is a self-taught photographer who takes joy in documenting the everyday aspect of her surroundings and creating an emotion or feeling from still images. Her work has been displayed in galleries in Virginia and is part of the permanent collection of Capital One.

THE OLD LOGGING ROAD by Robert Curl
HONORABLE MENTION

HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)
Robert Curl says of his work, "My work is always driven by concept, individual bodies of work being a visual narrative that portrays a poetic or philosophical concept derived from my musings over literary sources and personal contemplation.
When certain idea’s, notions and thoughts crystallize into a coherent narrative, I begin assembling and creating relevant imagery by way of a photographs, intaglio printing, screen printing or, as in many cases, a collaboration of the three.
I either create deliberate compositions, or I carefully search for those moments when a phenomenological connection between time, space, and observer (myself) produce a piece of imagery for the greater narrative. When the desired imagery is collected I consciously organize and edit it into a visual “poem,” constructed of multiple images or stanzas, which, when arranged in a specific way, make a cohesive and coherent narrative."
Robert Curl is a recent Masters of Fine Arts degree recipient from California State University-Chico, and a recent addition to the art and design faculty at Southern Utah University. Curl works mainly in photography and printmaking, though will use whatever medium he finds necessary for a given project. Curl’s work tends to focus predominantly on existential themes such as death, meaning of life, memory, afterlife, etc.

DIEBENKORN REFLECTION 1 by Robin Repp

HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)
Robin Repp says of her work, "My work explores the concept of anticipation of the future or the unknown.
With influences as diverse as Thomas Struth, Dorthea Lange, Elmer Bischoff, and Minor White. For most of my career, I have been using infrared photography, the figure in the landscape and social commentary topics to tell my story.
These images which I am submitting here are reflections of Richard Diebenkorn’s Ocean Park paintings on the floor of the Orange County Museum of Art. I noticed that the reflections were more abstract and beautiful under my feet. No one seemed to look down into this other world of Diebenkorn imagery."
Robin Repp's work has been included in exhibitions in the Laguna Art Museum, the Oakland Art Museum, the Berkeley Art Museum, Museum of Art & History, Lancaster, The Shapero Modern, London, The Victoria & Albert Museum, London and various galleries such as the Huntington Beach Art Center, Rochester Contemporary Art Gallery, N.Y.C, The Studios Inc.

HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)
Sheri Neva says of her work, "In 2005, my life changed forever.
Setting foot in Delta College Microscopy facility, I had no idea what was about to happen. At that moment, I went from being a teacher to a student.
I started learning about a new world. The microscopic world is a fascinating mix of science and art, revealing the hidden beauty of life.
Whether it is related to my job in the aerospace industry or just something that I manage to encounter in my adventures in Playa Del Rey, CA, I relish every moment. Another way to explore and find something new, something incredible, something beautiful, something to share.
My scanning electron microscope makes this all possible. I never know what I will find when I put a sample in the microscope. Seeing the microstructure of a mosquito wing or the grooves and pits in one single grain of sand from the beach I live on still amazes me after seven years. At 200 to 100,000 times magnification, these micrographs still draw me in every time I look at them. They show me how beautiful life is and how much more there is to discover.
This is my life’s passion, exploring life, by combining technology and art to show you what our world really looks like. I feel privileged to share this with you. I hope you find the art in science as I do."

ASCETIC PILLAR by Summar Alsemeiry

Summar Alsemeiry says of her work, "In a modernist photography museum, the line between art and not-art is delineated sharply by the edge of a black frame against a white wall. But photography's inner nature challenges such delineation. Photography champions the overlooked and rewards incessant glancing.
As a gallery monitor, I have seen visitors, inspired by the artwork, photograph the shadow cast by the velvet rope barrier, temperature controls stacked like seashells on a shelf, and their own face swimming in a pane of plexiglass."
Summar Alsemeiry graduated with a BA in art history from the University of Arizona in 2016.
Her work has been published in Musée and Float Magazine. Her website showcases her recent body of photographs, which continues her interest in environment and technology by turning her lens on driving a car as a state of mind.

CLARENDON AVENUE by Victoria Heilweil

Victoria Heilweil says of her work, "'In Plain Sight' is a collection of found still-lifes; a discovery of a moment, a spontaneous formation, a gesture happened upon while wandering urban streets.
Employing formal compositions to celebrate the aesthetic qualities of my explorations, I seek the tension between the grotesque and the beautiful, between the subject and the treatment. These simultaneously alluring and abject items serve as an intriguing archive of our daily routines.
Inspired by Wabi Sabi, a philosophy and aesthetic that stems from Japanese Buddhism, I utilize marks as individual narratives that are intimate yet revealing, unique and historical. Striving to capture the seductive nature of the imperfect in things modest and humble, I transform the mundane into the sublime, making visible that which we take for granted.
Appreciation of accidental art is paramount to reconnecting with our humanity, and I aim to honor the ordinary aspects of our existence."
Victoria Mara Heilweil is a nationally exhibited photographic artist, curator and educator.
