GREY STORM by Isabela Nobell

Isabela Nobell says, "Photography is fairly new in my life. Landscape photography even newer. When I first started taking pictures I only had eyes for people. Portraits. I could easily see beauty in people’s faces, expressions and their different personalities.

And I used to think that landscape was boring.

Now I know I was wrong. Well, not wrong. I just didn’t have the right tools to appreciate and fully understand how powerful landscape photography can be.

When I am surrounded by an environment with a 360o view from any direction, I try to be present, to immerse myself in it, to really feel, and look for signs.

When I shoot landscape I want to make a portrait of that environment. With one single frame I want to communicate what that place is telling me. What I see is definitely there but it is also my interpretation of reality. My landscape photography is not staged. It is not my production. It is just me being blessed for being able to capture God’s work."

THE HIGH LAKE DUSY BASIN by Karen Klinedinst
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Karen Klinedinst says, "I draw my inspiration from the nineteenth century landscape painting of Thomas Cole, George Innes and The Hudson River School. Similar to these painters, I interpret the landscape and how it affects me emotionally and spiritually. My approach to photographing the landscape is not about capturing reality, but creating a neo-Romantic world reflective of my memory and imagination."

Karen Klinedinst is an artist using photography to explore themes of place, nature and the environment. She is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Her landscapes have been exhibited at Massoni Art Gallery, Soho Photo Gallery, The Center for Fine Art Photography, Griffin Museum of Photography and the Biggs Museum of American Art. Her work is in the collection of the National Park Service.

She was a 2004 Platte Clove artist-in-residence at the Catskills Center for Conservation and Development, and a 2006 National Park Service artist-in-residence at Acadia National Park in Maine. Her solo exhibit, The Emotional Landscape, is currently on view at the Griffin Museum of Photography at the Greater Boston Stage Company Gallery until October 9, 2018.

LANDSCAPE #07 by Saskia Boelsums
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Saskia Boelsums says, "“As a Dutch visual artist and photographer, I carry a rich cultural heritage. That is why I feel a strong connection to the Dutch tradition of landscape painters. That rich history helped to shape me. And at the same time it confronts me with the future. The beauty that I try to capture in my photographs, also hides uncertainty and an undefined threat. I see the skies become more dramatic, the weather is becoming more extreme, our climate is becoming more violent. It looks like the classic historical Dutch landscapes and skies are being pushed out by landscapes and skies that are the result of climate change. I am very aware of that tension.”

Visual artist Saskia Boelsums was born in the Netherlands and grew up in Iran and Curaçao. In Groningen she attended the art academy Minerva and graduated in spatial and graphic design. Since 2013 she has fully focused on photography and achieved great success. Soon she was asked to participate in photographic exhibitions, and she was had many nominations and won a large number of prizes. Saskia has exhibited her work in Amsterdam, London, Berlin and New York.

OTHER WORLDS by Dawn Watson
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Dawn Watson says, "These images speak to my attention and connection to the natural landscape, whether as you suggestion, it is in my own backyard, (Winter Lorax), far flung places (Climb to the Sky, a kapok tree in Equadorian Rainforest) or the frosted skylight in my bathroom window on a cold winter's night (Other Worlds).

Capturing or creating moments of tension, connection or contemplation, my work is a visual tone poem engaging image, texture, words, form and/or movement to explore our shared psychological and sensory topography, how we inhabit both our interior and exterior worlds. Concerns about the effect of ecological degradation on our health and way of life influence my work in tangible but subtle ways as I endeavor to make sense of the "both/and" that is contemporary life, the beauty and chaos inherent in each moment."

Dawn Watson is an artist and activist, her work examines the fragility of both the natural environment as well as our relationship to it and to each other.

After twenty-five years as a dancer and choreographer,  Watson transitioned to photography, finding affinity in the visual storytelling offered by both live performance and the captured image. She has exhibited her photographs and artist books throughout the United States including The Griffin Museum of Photography, Albrecht-Kemper Museum, Tilt Gallery, Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, and a solo exhibition at the Los Angeles Center for Photography and Griffin Museum of Photography.
