SUMMER ON THE SKOKOMISH by Steve Davis
(Click on image for larger view)

Steve Davis says of his series, 'The Western Lands', "Beauty can lurk in strange places, and I find myself drawn to landscapes which suggest ambiguity, emptiness, and the spiritually untidy.   To me, they resonate as backdrops to stories and dreams—vague suggestions of the earth as a temporary gesture.  They are as close to nowhere as I can get."

Steve Davis is a documentary portrait, landscape photographer and educator based in the Pacific Northwest. His work has appeared in Harper's, the New York Times Magazine, Russian Esquire, and is in many collections, including the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Seattle Art Museum, the Tacoma Art Museum, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and the George Eastman House. He is a former 1st place recipient of the Santa Fe CENTER Project Competition, and two-time winner of Washington Arts Commission/Artist Trust Fellowships.

Davis is the coordinator of photography, media curator and adjunct faculty member of The Evergreen State College. He is represented by the James Harris Gallery, Seattle.

TREE EARLY MORNING by Stephanie Marc aka Marc'S
In the « Reunion Island », an early morning walk, full of humidity, beauty, and mystery.
(Click on image for larger view)

Stéphanie Marc says, "My artist name is Marc'S. I’m a french photographer, from La Rochelle, France.

It’s my second job actually, I’m a nurse with an artistic side. I started the photography just few years ago, I wanted to express the second part of myself.

It was to strong, not to do anything. At the moment I had problems with my hand, so no painting, no carving, the only issue to explain something was the photography.
And I love it! You can have an idea, a them, and make a scene. But it’s also what you see around you, that inspire the end.

Everything can inspire me. It could be a little thing, and I can jump from nowhere with my cam, and shoot…anything, nothing...that means for me.

Lot of my pictures are inspired by the nature, because of the light. The morning light is the best for me, everything wake up, it is so quiet, and so beautiful. But it could be a shadow, the sun or the storms, just a form.

My eyes look around, everywhere…and suddenly stop on something, it's like a painting, it could be the sky, the see, just a tree, even a dead tree, a stone. Because at one moment, this moment, it’s the perfect moment for me…the moment when the nature offer her beauty or the ugly.

I don’t have anything to tell about my career, because I don’t have any…I’m on Instagram…this is my gallery...

Don’t search a line, I’m prolific…

Sorry for my English..."

WINDLESS by Stefynie Rosenfeld
(Click on image for larger view)

Stefynie Rosenfeld says, "My photography explores the intricacies of the human condition, the blurred lines between the literal and surreal, the passage of time, and the spiritual beauty of the natural world.  Each image I create is a reflection of encounters I've had with people and/or places, whose stories express emotions often too deep for words.

These Landscape images are from my summer travels around the northeast Coast of Maine and the Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts.

Career Highlights:

For me, there is no better feeling than when an image of mine makes an emotional connection with someone viewing my work.  I could not ask for a greater highlight."

OUT-ON-A-LIMB by Shāna Einhorn
(Click on image for larger view)

Shāna Einhorn says, "(Out On A Limb):
Only occasionally do I accept commissioned work — mostly due to the enormous energy output required & since stamina is not my strong suit, it forces me to be rather selective.

This experience was such an inspired creative collaboration and fell right in line with my responsive and spontaneous approach that permeates my personal work. My art explores one’s connection to self, each other and the natural world and this was no exception.

I am a fine art photographer from Huntington, NY. My art is not about image, it's about essence and as such I think of my work as a spiritual photography. The images explore one’s connection to self, each other and the natural world, using mostly old manual cameras with black & white film and lately mobile photography. I came to photography two years after a cancer diagnosis back in 2003 when a friend loaned me a camera.

While struggling with questions regarding despair vs. life the camera became my lifeline. It soon became apparent that photography was to become my life’s endeavor as a connection to the medium quickly deepened. One can say that I used this new opportunity as a way to re-shape my world.

My intention was to connect and make good pictures; not to theorize about them – that came much later. The constraints and ramifications of living with chronic illness inform much of my art, as themes of connection and isolation permeate much of the work. Ultimately it is an inquiry about belonging and significance. My work has been in 29 group exhibitions both juried and otherwise, and currently is in 3 private collections.

These works were made as a visceral response to a recent personal traumatic event. Adrift and suspended in time I found myself led by an inexplicable impulse. In these places I found either an offering, a mirror to the frightful inner landscape and/or a momentary reprieve from a looming outcome. This culminated in a series, “The Year I Got Left Back”.

LANDSCAPE #7 by Saskia Boelsums
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Saskia Boelsums says, "“As a Dutch visual artist and photographer, I carry a rich cultural heritage. That is why I feel a strong connection to the Dutch tradition of landscape painters. That rich history helped to shape me. And at the same time it confronts me with the future. The beauty that I try to capture in my photographs, also hides uncertainty and an undefined threat. I see the skies become more dramatic, the weather is becoming more extreme, our climate is becoming more violent. It looks like the classic historical Dutch landscapes and skies are being pushed out by landscapes and skies that are the result of climate change. I am very aware of that tension.”

Visual artist Saskia Boelsums was born in the Netherlands and grew up in Iran and Curaçao. In Groningen she attended the art academy Minerva and graduated in spatial and graphic design. Since 2013 she has fully focused on photography and achieved great success. Soon she was asked to participate in photographic exhibitions, and she was had many nominations and won a large number of prizes. Saskia has exhibited her work in Amsterdam, London, Berlin and New York.

STOVEPIPE WELLS DUNES SUNSET by SameSource
(Click on image for larger view)

SameSource is a photographic artist with over two decades of professional experience recording images.

SameSource fine art photography spans both landscape and bodyscape, often exploring human sexuality and its relationship with art.

With recent showings from the Musée du Louvre, Paris, France, to Art Basel, Miami Beach, SameSource was recognized in the international Lumiere Award for 2017.  Coagula Gallery in Los Angeles included SameSource in its Ten Top Artists exhibition for 2016 in a show curated by Tulsa Kinney of Artillery Magazine.

SameSource work has been featured in The Huffington Post and American Photo magazine, and SameSource has twice been profiled by Silvershotz International Magazine of Contemporary Photography for the Apples and Apples Reinterpreted series, and is one of 25 international artists featured in the magazine’s 2017 Folio of Fine Art Photography (ISBN: 9781642049985).

SameSource was one of thirty international photographers in the Los Angeles Festival of Photography’s 2017 exhibition on street photography at Fathom Gallery.  In addition to being featured in numerous photography books, SameSource is the author of four fine art photography books, Objects of Ruin (ISBN: 9781320134194), Apples (ISBN: 9781366155986), Apples Reinterpreted (ISBN: 9781366155856), and The Green Dress (ISBN: 9781388795016).

SameSource has origins in the rural Midwest. After studying music and philosophy in a liberal arts education, the artist went to Italy and became immersed in the works of the Renaissance. A return to the US brought the pursuit of graduate work in music and cinema, with an eventual arrival on the west coast via the USC film school. In addition to the full-time pursuit of photographic fine art, SameSource output has included notable works as a recording artist, writer, and filmmaker.

SameSource is represented by Fabrik Projects.

Stovepipe Wells Dunes Sunset

SameSource says, "I’m using a nice filter here to capture the sun starting to set over the Mesquite Flat Dunes near Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley.  This dune field includes three types of dunes: crescent, linear, and star shaped—all visible in this wide angle shot.  Polygon-cracked clay of an ancient lakebed forms the floor.  Mesquite trees have created large hummocks that provide stable habitats for wildlife."

RAINS OVER UBEHEBE CRATER by SameSource
(Click on image for larger view)

Image:Rains Over Ubehebe Crater
SameSource says, "A rare rainstorm approaches Death Valley’s volcano crater, Ubehebe.  Recent studies debate the age of the volcano (anywhere from 800 years to several thousand) and whether it is still active!  The colors in the minerals are miocene-aged conglomerate of limestone, mudstone, quartzite, and volcanic cobbles up to eight inches in diameter.  A fault separates the yellow deposits from the orange ones.  The crater is about half a mile wide and steep.  If you happen to be there on a rare day when there is a rainstorm, the winds and flooding can kick your ass.  Be careful."

SameSource says, "This features the highly endangered Death Valley pupfish (Cyprinodon salinus) from Salt Creek in Death Valley, a tiny aquifer-fed salt water source, about 160 feet below sea level in the hottest place on earth.  The water is four times more salty than the ocean and can be as hot as 116 ºF.  The fish are around one to two inches long.  I took this during mating season.  Three colorful males are chasing a couple of harder-to-see females in the photo."

SPIRIT FALLS by Rich Vogel
(Royalston, Massachusetts):
(Click on image for larger view)

Rich Vogel says, "When people ask me what I photograph, I answer, half seriously, "Things that don't move."  My approach to photography is deliberate, which is one reason I concentrate on landscapes.  More importantly, I enjoy looking for and studying the small, slow dramas that unfold in the natural world around us, whether it's an impressive array of clouds moving across the sky, the contrast of bright, falling water against the dark shadows of moss covered rocks, or the subtle play of light on rolling hills.  Often, the drama for me is a sense of the immensity of the world around us.  Some of my favorite landscapes are those where I get a sense of timelessness, where it seems that the scene before me has not changed for a period that dwarfs my lifespan.

Despite this sense of timelessness, the the variations of light and seasons create a sense of urgency, seldom allowing much time for capturing the moment at hand.

I use mostly black and white film in medium and large format to take my time and capture detail and to concentrate on variations and balance of tone, contrast and composition.  I develop and print the negatives using traditional darkroom processes, partly to concentrate more on the images and tones, but mostly because I’m tired of sitting in front of a computer and enjoy the process, working with my hands.

Travel for work and the iPhone revived my interest in photography.  After a brief fling with digital photography, I fell in love with film and darkroom processes.  After retiring from a career in software, I TA at the New England School of Photography, struggle in the darkroom, wander the woods north of Boston and travel under the big skies out West every summer.

Career Highlights:

I started showing my work in 2014 at Theia Studios in North Andover, Massachusetts.  Since then, I have shown work at Camera Commons, The Darkroom Gallery, the Griffin Museum of Photography, a photo of the day at Don't Take Pictures and an honorable mention on L.A. Photo Curator."

RED SKY by Phillipa Bloom
(Click on image for larger view)

Phillipa Bloom says, "Once asked to sum up my photographic style, I offered 'You see how I feel', which goes some way to describing the emotional response I need - and hope to convey - to make my pictures.

I don't know where it comes from, only that I recognise it when it's there. Primarily concerned with people and place, it is the quiet moments in-between which have started to dominate the work so that whilst made in the spirit of the documentary tradition, it also expresses both ambiguity and other-worldliness. Landscape - and the people within it - has been a long-standing fascination since a nomadic childhood across Africa and Asia; the use or absence of colour an extension of my measured emotional response to a scene."

A Hong Kong based photographer and Asiaphile, Phillipa is a contemporary image-maker who continues to grow her personal practice and exhibits internationally. Her images can be found in homes all over the world. Phillipa's career highlight to date came this July when her photographic work, Where Did You Go, was exhibited at the Summer Exhibition 2018 at The Royal Academy of Arts, London, the largest open call exhibition in the world.

Phillipa also works commercially styling and shooting lifestyle, interiors, and marketing projects for gallery and hotel clients in Asia; and uses her photography to support a number of local Hong Kong charities.

ARCADIA-1 by Nadide Goksun
(Click on image for larger view)

Nadide Goksun says, "When I was a little girl, the viewfinder of my father's Voigtlander camera showed me an upside down image. The thought of this completely different world excited me and made me extremely curious.

With the push of my father's finger, the world became upside down and then it righted itself in a photograph. This transformation allowed our memories to stay with us forever.

Photographing the ominous tranquility of nature or the vegetation has been forced into a state of hibernation by the snow and temperatures of winter riding through the rumble of a moving train, to me, is like finding the upside down world in my dad's viewfinder and righting it.

My series "Arcadian Spaces" captures the fleeting moments of a train ride and transforms it into the dramatic landscapes.

I am a ceramic artist and photographer.

I studied computer programming at Bogazici University in Istanbul and Korean ceramics at Sungshin Women’s University in Seoul. My interest in photography turned into a passion as I started to study at the International Center of Photography in NYC.

I was born in Ankara, Turkey in 1967 and have lived in Istanbul, TelAviv and Seoul.I currently live in Scarsdale, New York.

Marna Bell says, "As a painter and photographer I have been drawn to the sacred aspects of the natural environment. My current project, "Luminous Journey", began as a road trip from Santa Cruz California to Yosemite National Park. The inspiration for this photographic series stems from the romantic play of light on the landscape and monochrome colors of the Hudson River School and the Luminist Movement. This work focuses on historical traditions of landscape painting and my personal journey through an unknown environment.

SEWN 2- A MODERN DIARY

I keep a daily photo diary to document my family and my life. As with many diaries, the process provides memory, understanding, and quiet expression in a complex and fast moving world.

With this imagery, I cut, rip, reorder, and deconstruct prints. I then, reassemble deconstructed image parts using thread.

This process allows me to reimagine memories, challenge what I see and feel, and pull together experiences into one representation.

I am not tied to precise chronology or a linear train of thought. I find life’s experiences to be a combination of independent, non-linear moments that we construct into memories.

I question what part of memory is the image we take and what is in our mind.
I consider memory a fluid construct, ever changing and growing.

I composite my imagery in a manner that reflects this notion.

Red thread binds the content.
Red for the blood, anger, and love found in the everyday.

A varnish congeals the images together in one sculptural entity.

What is memory and what is photograph?
For me they collide and act as one.

ART PRACTICE STATEMENT

It is through art that I make sense the world. I use my life and family as material for my work. By doing this, I am able to explore the complexity that exists in the everyday and the richness found in the mundane.      Through the use of montage, collage, and purposeful juxtaposition of photographs, it is my intention to examine the “truth” in life. I do not feel tied to chronology, linear expression, or one media exclusively. My belief is that life experiences are a combination of independent, non-linear moments that we construct into memory. These memories can shift and change over time. They have specific colors and levels of visual clarity. I create works in a manner that reflects these notions. I take photographs daily to remember and to sketch ideas in my mind. I then use these photographs as a jumping off point for mixed media explorations.

I use photography, collage, sculpture, textiles, and books to explore these notions. After the primary construction, I often move on to deconstruct then reconstruct again. This back and forth is non-linear and allows for an ongoing discovery of layers of meaning in the work. At the heart of my work is the notion that it is the ordinary in life that is truly extraordinary, that memories are fluid and ever-changing. My work is an investigation of memory, family, and the role photography plays in these ideas."

Liz lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and two children where she maintains her own art practice.  For over a decade, Liz was a member of the photo faculty at the San Francisco Art Institute where she specialized in digital imaging, compositing, mixed media, and the handmade books. In 2005, Liz completed her MFA at SFAI where she received the prestigious John Collier Award of Excellence for her thesis project. The project was based on the turbulent circumstances surrounding the birth of Liz’s first child, Emma. After completing her graduate studies, Liz dedicated her work fully to art practice and teaching. In 2017, Liz moved into a full time studio practice. Liz’s personal work focuses the notions of photography and its role in family life, memory, and our sense of self. Her most recent work explores mixed media; particularly the combination of textiles, book arts, sculpture, and photography.

TREE AT NIGHT by Leslie J Yerman

Leslie J. Yerman says, "I find myself drawn to settings where natural and man-made worlds meet. I am especially moved by trees and the sky, by how nature can make even the most frenetic environment peaceful and healing, by how something ordinary can be beautiful. I have chosen cream tones to create a sense of gentleness, as well as to see things more clearly. I think I seek out this type of scene, because in making these images, I am trying to heal myself."

Leslie J. Yerman has been making photos most of her adult life. From New York City and based in Tucson, AZ, she has photographed urban scenes, nature, people and places. A communications consultant for more than 20 years, she focused more on her photography over the past decade.

MAUNAKEA- HOW IT SHOULD BE by Leah Schretenthaler
(Click on image for larger view)

Leah Schretenthaler says of the series,
'The Invasive Species of the Built
Environment: Old and New Techniques',
The land of Hawaii is vast, luxurious, and idyllic but past the wanderlust images the land is very controversial. The growing population and tourism continues to threaten the space and its ability to accommodate all the occupants. From the research telescopes on the mountain of Maunakea on the Big Island, to the crumbling rail project on Oahu believed to fix the traffic problem, these infrastructures have augmented the land.

The industrial growth happening in Hawaii goes beyond simply manipulating the landscape; it destroys the historical records and spiritual places that have existed there for millions of years.

Through these photographs the attention focuses on the spaces that these infrastructures impede on the natural environment, instead of colors of the idyllic Hawaii. Using silver gelatin prints which consist of selected, man made spaces that have attempted to be removed create a burnt and sometimes empty area.

The use of a laser cutter to cut the structure from the landscape leaves scar upon the image. The removed spaces aid in seeing what Hawaii would be like without these impositions. These areas that have been removed from the images are not being replaced with anything, therefore communicates the natural impingement this structure has on the environment
even if it were to be removed.

However, in the process of trying to remove these objects has weakened the paper and metaphorically weakened the landscape it is trying to depict. The areas that have not been completely removed leaves a faint and thin layer of paper residue. The structures still exist and can never be completely erased. However, it draws attention to what is becoming the built environment in Hawaii.

These invasive infrastructures have impinged on the natural environment. Although these images discuss visually the reality of Hawaii, it brings to light that this is not a one state problem.

Much like the invasive species that we eradicate from our gardens and fields, so to should we approach these human invasions onto the landscape. No longer should humanity build for the sake of building; but should instead question the social and political concerns that exist in the natural world."

Leah Schretenthaler was born and raised in Hawaii. She completed her BFA degree from the University of South Dakota and holds a Masters degree in art education from Boston University. She is currently aan MFA candidate at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Her work uses traditional photography, video, and metal casting to create images. Through her art practice, her research presents a connection between land, material, and performance. Her work has been displayed nationally and internationally including Hawaii,
