SHED by Gary Beeber

Gary Beeber says of his work, "Growing up, I loved the paintings of Edward Hopper and the photographs of Diane Arbus, Walker Evans and Eugene Atget.
I started out as a painter. I painted little photo-realistic watercolors based on my photographs, but eventually stopped painting altogether and concentrated on photography. For many years I photographed architectural details and landscapes. Later on, after producing and directing three documentary films and an off-Broadway burlesque show, I became interested in taking pictures of people. I am fascinated with people who live unconventional lives.
As a photographer, I love immediacy and the thrill of exploration. I am currently working on several projects."
Gary Beeber is an award-winning American photographer/filmmaker who has exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and Europe.
Solo exhibitions include two at Generous Miracles Gallery NYC and an upcoming show (PERSONALITIES, July 6-September 1st, 2017) at The Griffin Museum of Photography, Winchester MA.
Beeber’s work has been included in juried exhibitions throughout the country. Among Fortune 500 companies who collect his work are Pfizer Pharmaceutical, Goldman Sachs and Chase Bank.

Gioia Kuss says of her work, "We are all part of an immense system, which we do not yet fully understand.
We have spent centuries studying, writing, and depicting the simple and complex way, the sun shines on a leaf, humans interact, destroy and create infrastructure; or the way the landscape sustains, renews, and supports life, while adapting to changes.
Our children and our grandchildren will still seek answers to questions we have perhaps not yet asked.
My photography communicates, through art and science—depicting light and dark and the splendor of color—our relationship to the greater world and to ourselves. I want to reflect a moment of life in photographs, to those who want to see as I do, with an awe of nature, humility in great societies, and love of the world. This essence of life is simply us all living and coexisting in a balance of complexity.
I seek to expose simplicities and complexities. I arrest time and capture the beauty of this planet and the diversity of human culture in an image. I want to believe the majority of people want to live in harmony with nature and support each other. Community matters.
We are, as human society, one more natural process at work in the world. If our goal is not to overwhelm nature but live as a part of it, then we can celebrate both the common place and the fantastic. We have within our capabilities the prospect of understanding why we should care about our life choices, climate change, biodiversity, and our ability to affect positive change in the way we live."
Gioia Kuss has degrees from Middlebury College and Conway School of Landscape Design. She first studied photography at Colorado Mountain College and continues learning from workshops, residencies, and travel.
Her recent exhibition and anticipated book: Landviews—Alchemy of Soil, Water, and Community explores the way humans have changed the landscape and defined cultures.
Her work is held in private collections and has been exhibited in several group shows. She enjoys working with non-profits and agencies to provide images that support environmental justice efforts. Gioia Kuss lives in Weybridge Vermont, USA.

MAN'S BEST FRIENDS SICILY by Harry Longstreet
(Click on image for larger view)
(Click on image for larger view)
Harry Longstreet says of his work, "No one just takes up space. The human condition is an entire canvas of thoughts, emotions and reactions to circumstances.
In my photography I try to capture the truth about diverse people and how they live and reflect their respective spaces.
My subjects never know they’ve been photographed. I don’t set-up or pose any shot and never employ anything but available light.
I retired after twenty-five years as a writer, producer and director of filmed entertainment, primarily for television.
When I’m not busy with my wife, children and grandchildren, I keep the creative juices flowing with still photography.
I’m always looking for images that speak to the human condition and the world around me. I favor ambient light and unposed, unaware subjects."

WHAT IS INTERDEPENDENCY OR TWO INVISIBLE 2017 by Jean-Francois Lanthier
(Click on image for larger view)
(Click on image for larger view)
Jean-Francois Lanthier says of his work, "What I seek to do in this photographic series is a simple conceptual art, and I would venture to qualify it as naive.
This is in contrast to the "traditional" conceptual art that often requires the public to be introduced to the world of art to understand.
I want to create a feeling of freshness with the audience. It is also possible to see my work from the point of view of body performance.
The understanding of the work is done only by considering the photo or by reading the title, not more. The main theme is inner life and self-knowledge, all on a white background to really put the concept in the foreground.
The premise of this series is quite simple, to make staging where people interact with an object, an object that is used for its primary function, but which is diverted from its context. This is what I call the metaphorical function of the object, and the use of this diverted object creates new subtleties in the feeling.
As if the emotions were the colors out of a tube of paint and spread out on a palette of colors and that one could make infinite variations from these basic colors. I am inspired by Nelson Goodman's theories on cognitivism, that is, I try to bring to life new emotions or new sensitivity variants that will enlarge the emotional palette and thereby enrich the viewer.
I began a bachelor in Visual and Media Arts at the University of Quebec in Montreal in 1997 and I finished in 2007, also I studied in contemporary art history during these years.
I also studied electroacoustic composition at University of Montreal. My specialty was video art, photography and aesthetic. Between 2006 and 2009, my video works was seen in several festivals in Europe and USA. After that I take a couple of years for thinking about my practice and the result was to change my primary practice, and it's become photography."

HOT COFFEE by JoAnn Wanamaker

(Click on image for larger view)
Joann Wanamaker says of her work, "My camera is like having a miniature suitcase waiting to be unpacked and rearranged when my eye meets the viewfinder.
I hope to create engaging juxtapositions in that blank rectangle by isolating a moment in time where the elements in each frame seem to have an intimate dialogue with each other while allowing the viewer to continue the conversation.
I'm inspired by memories of the halcyon days of my childhood; backyard sprinklers, fireflies and ice cream trucks.
There is no visual human interference within my frame, however the landscapes are just as much about the people who are not there. Who lives around the corner? Who rode that bike? I'm hoping to preserve the past while posing questions about the present."
Jo Ann Wanamaker studied Fine Art and Art Education at SUNY Buffalo and received an M.F.A. from New York University.
She became a painter and a commercial illustrator, followed by a career in product and textile design. Photography allows all the layers of her creative past to merge together and transform into more personal statements that can resonate with the viewer.

BROWN SKY GODDESS by Karen Hochman
(Click on image for larger view)
(Click on image for larger view)
Karen Hochman Brown says of her work, "I’m a child in my mother’s garden.
Flashes of color and light dance as I hold my first kaleidoscope up to one eye, close the other, find a source of light, and the rest of the world disappears while I endlessly turn, turn, turn.
The light transforms broken bits of colored glass into perfect rays of symmetry. Identical triangles recede into the mirrors, creating vibrant patterns, effortlessly changing as I spin the tube while my heart beats in wild delight at the endless play of animations.
I slow the spin, watch for an exceptional shape and stop. The momentary pattern is fragile, can collapse in an instant, so I hold very, very still. Even then, precision is required.
Who would imagine that I was igniting a life-long passion for the swirling patterns of light and color born on a summer’s day so long ago?
Today my kaleidoscope is more complex. Computer software and hardware replace the simple tube of cardboard, glass, and mirror. I sit with a stylus and keyboard, watching the show unfold as I turn, layer, and spin the reflection from one of my photographs, brightly illuminated in my monitor.
No longer restricted to a three-way reflection or a flat mirror, I romp through polar space, fiddle with fractals, and play in the realm of infinite images.
From one of my photographs, I pull out the metaphorical “broken bits of glass” and turn these into my own kaleidoscopic imagery—spinning, nudging, and shifting these flecks of light until, like that child on the lawn, my heart beats wildly and I become lost in the endless dance of color, light, and shape."
Karen Hochman Brown found her passion for art in her early primary school years. In high school she discovered geometry and did not hesitate to fuse mathematics with her artwork, exploring intersecting circles and patterns. She found a distinct and immediate marriage of mathematical precision and aesthetic beauty.
After later earning a BA in Art from Pitzer College in Claremont, CA, she continued to study math and did post-graduate work at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA, creating a course titled Construction Geometry Via Art. She taught this curriculum at the Arts Magnet High School in Oakland and at the Waldorf School in Altadena, CA.
After buying her first Macintosh computer in 1984, she tightened the interconnection of art and math via the medium of technology by taking classes in computer-based graphic design at the University of California, Los Angeles and Art Center College of Design. Using her years of education and experience, Hochman Brown currently creates digital art that explores “hidden worlds” within manipulated reflections of imagery by using fractal geometry-based software.

HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)
Kathryn Reichert says of her work, "Our lives unfold as a series of events in which the decisions we make simultaneously shape our understanding and definition of ourselves.
Our personal narratives are crafted from circumstances we find ourselves in. We are constantly confronted with decisions.
Sometimes we make the right ones and sometimes we (arguably) don’t. Often, particularly poignant events leave impressions that weigh heavily on our minds. But one of the most fascinating things about the human mind is its ability to reconcile our actions based on the situation. We learn our lesson, alter our perspective to account for this new information and redesign ourselves. After enough time has passed, memories are tucked away and- like shedding a skin- we leave that iteration of our past self behind, striving to look only forward, to the new and improved version of ourselves. We applaud our growth as a more stable, mature human being.
Of course, this serenity only lasts until a catalyst presents itself and all of those memories come flooding back. We are forced to once again confront the magnitude and consequences of all of these events. One can’t help but wonder if this was the place where your friendship fell apart or your love was born. This association rekindles the fragments of our past selves we grew from, forcing us to recognize and re-examine the person we once were and the person we have thus become.
My series “Places We Have Been” focuses on the evolution of identity materializing from ghosts of our former selves.
This is a very personal project; I began it as I was questioning how I had come to be the person I am. Why do I lie so much? Why do I avoid others? Where does all of this worry and guilt come from? I began to look at the landscapes that have played a significant role in my life and found that at first glance, images of these places were startlingly unfamiliar.
I remembered them in a way that was painted in emotion and memory; the landscape had evolved into more a psychological one.
To more accurately capture the significance of these places, I digitally painted objects into the landscape reifying the emotions that I attribute to each particular place. The wear-and-tear evident on these objects are meant to portray the passing of time.
Like the objects in each photo, each memory was once blindingly new and raw. The passing of time has taken some of their luster, leaving a whisper of their presence. A ghost, but certainly still present, much like the feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you return to a place you have not been for years."
Kathryn Reichert was born and raised in New Jersey. Her restlessness and love of adventure kept her traveling along the eastern seaboard whenever possible and she found she enjoyed photographing all of the moments along the way. She was stationed in Alaska as a soldier in the US Army and has remained since.
She returned to school in 2015 to pursue bachelor’s degrees in both business and the arts at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Her current projects utilize forced perspective and manipulation as a means of exploring imaginary places and "what-if" scenarios. She mainly shoots digital imagery but enjoys incorporating film and alternative processes into her workflow.

BLUE STRING BEANS by Linda Kessler

(Click on image for larger view)
Linda Kessler says of her work, "The early age of 5 began my intrigue with color, shapes, and design.
I was eight when I picked up my first camera, a Kodak Brownie, even if some of my photos had heads cut off. I have been working in painting and photography ever since. For this project, these photographs are reminiscent of my childhood, when lying on the ground and looking up at the sky was magical, a place of discovery and curiosity.
My work is both playful and mysterious. In my travels to other countries I notice the dream-like qualities of the sky and it’s objects, seen through water, which creates a surreal quality. I am always surprised of the ubiquitous nature of memory in places."
Born in Brooklyn, NY, Kessler received her B.A. from Brooklyn College in 1975, and her M.Ed. from Northeastern University in 1978.
She attended the Art Students League from 1981-1988 and received her M.F.A. from Pratt Institute 1997.

YESTERDAY, FOREVER by Marthanna Yater
(Click on image for larger view)
(Click on image for larger view)
Marthanna Yater says of her work," 'Capturing Life as Art', Women and children have been the focus of my photographic career from the beginning.
When I work with any beautiful form, I travel full circle, from behind my camera to in front of my camera. I often become the subject, so that I can communicate exactly what I expect to achieve in the photograph. I revolve so that I can evolve.
When I work with children, I feel every bit of the innocence, freedom, and reckless abandon, in which they sail through life. I delight in preserving the art of life in unexpected moments.
It is with this passion and intensity that I approach each shoot. It is what makes me an award-winning photographer. My unerring instincts and the ability to see the photograph from the inside out is what sets me apart and consistently allows me to unveil the art of the moment."
Durham, North Carolina based photographer, Marthanna Yater, whose work has been honored with the highest achievements in black and white photography, specializes in capturing the elements of the earth and story-telling images in organic settings.
Yater’s evocative photographs awaken a longing to return to a simpler, more grounded life. She delights in seeing, and photographing, children in the elements during moments of discovery. She likes dirt, because, as Yater states, “Dirt is real”.
Yater describes her journey of self-discovery: “While studying Education, I exchanged the confines of graduate school for the classroom of the world. During my travels, I experienced an epiphany in the Australian Outback at Uluru / Ayers Rock.
After a brief rain, the evening light burst through the gray clouds striking the rock. The sacred monolith was set ablaze into a fiery red display. As a double rainbow poured over Uluru, it was revealed - there was an artist within."
Upon her return to the States, Yater pursued photographic study at Penland School of Crafts in the mountains of North Carolina. Once again, Yater was surrounded by what she loves - nature, creativity and those close to the earth.
Professional Experience:

LANDED 5187 by Martin Cox

Martin Cox says of his work, "The great English landscape painter Constable said we see nothing truly until we understand it.
I photograph landscapes and places that pose questions. The element of time is often drawn in to my landscape series and I am interested in land use, agriculture, geology, weather, industry, climate change and plate tectonics as they all unfold as visual clues. Landscape operates as the chief organ of sentiment in our lives, existing out of the corner of the eye, yet occupying the base note to human existence."
Martin Cox (born UK, active US). The port of Southampton, provided early inspiration, Cox studied Fine Art at Winchester School of Art, and Exeter School of Art and Design in Devon, England before moving to California.
His solo exhibition “Far Away Right Here” is currently showing at the Husavik Museum in Iceland. Large monochromatic prints investigating minimalist landscape under heavy snow, along with other works stemming from a winter Icelandic art residency.
Based in Los Angeles, Martin’s landscape projects, often included extended time spans, for example, an 8 year investigation of distressed resort towns adjacent to a shrinking lake was shown in London and Los Angeles.
He spent 6 years photographing fading disused ocean liners from Asia to the Atlantic coast, was shown in Los Angeles and published. His subjects include a 13th century manor house steeped in entropy, and currently a landscape project combining San Andreas fault areas with Icelandic locations of geological stress is ongoing.
Local commissions and permanent collections include projects at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum, LA City Council 13th District and the Safnahúsið Á Húsavík, Iceland.
Trained at a traditional black & white fine art printer, and with experience co-directing a gallery Cox now works with digital media and is also developing a conceptual museum combining 2D and 3D works and online works for his museum of ennui.
SELECTED SOLO EXHIBITIONS:

Martin’s 2017 project: www.MuseumOfEnnui.org

SUTTER CHAIRS by Meghan Brabant

Meghan Brabant says of her work, "It started when I was young, too young to honestly remember. My mom sat me down at the kitchen table and said the words, “I’m going to die.” I’ll never forget when my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer, it changed my life in more ways than I expected.
I spent most of my childhood going to see her at one hospital in particular, Sutter hospital. Those memories play over and over like a video on a loop, a fuzzy image of myself ruining down the hallways, excited to see if my mother was feeling any better that day. I remember all of the bustling nurses and doctors that would roam the halls, the loud beeping of machines as I passed by. What always lingered after all these years is the smell of the hospital, it was some type of mix between baby powder, cleaning products, and human waste.
After my mom passed away, I left my hometown and never really thought a place could resonate with me as much as Sutter did. I heard news they had shut down the hospital and moved to a newer facility on the outskirts of town and immediately knew that I needed to see it one last time. As I walked down the empty halls, I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed. I always knew people die, places change, and life moves forward, but there was something about this hospital that made me feel at home."
Meghan Brabant is a Bay Area native and works primarily in the medium of photography, both film and digital.
Within her work, the focus is aimed to expand her knowledge about places that people often ignore and overlook. Though many people find mental hospitals, abandoned buildings, and cemeteries to be unsettling locations, Meghan chooses to bring light in their darkness and to discover the story behind these places.
She recently graduated with honors from San Francisco State University with a bachelor's degree in Studio Art and an emphasis in photography.
