Maureen Delaney says, "Lumen Landscapes is a series of photograms of the landscape made by the landscape.

Using smaller plant materials found in nature I construct large abstract landscape vistas. This dramatic shift in perspective and scale challenges the viewer’s preconceived notion of what defines landscape photography.

At the root of this series is a childlike sense of curiosity and creation. I have a young son who is absorbing all that life has to offer and his unbridled curiosity is something I truly admire and try to emulate.

Curiosity and exploration are carried through at every stage of creating these images, from gathering source materials found in nature while exploring with my son, to assembling them into abstract landscape scenes, to exposing in the sun for hours, and finally to fixing them as the colors continually shift.

While I have a previsualized idea of what I want the scene to look like, I never really know what the final print will reveal. This childlike excitement of experiencing something for the first time drives my curiosity to create more images. In the process of reimagining plant materials to create my own unique vision of an abstract landscape scene, I find myself acting as part sculptor, part painter, and part photographer.

Lumen printing is a form of photogram printing where a uniquely beautiful color print can be made from exposing materials in direct contact with black-and-white photographic paper under UV light such as the sun. “Lumen” is understood as the projection of light radiating from one ominous source (i.e., sunlight, or UV light).

These original prints are one-of-a-kind, printed-out, silver-gelatin prints. Printed-out simply means the development stage occurs during exposure, and the only subsequent step is fixing the image in a fixer solution, thus keeping materials and process steps to a minimum."

Maureen Delaney is an artist and educator living in Portland, Oregon. Her specialty within the field of photography is in alternative and experimental processes, as she loves to get her hands dirty during the creative process.

A current theme running throughout Maureen’s work is her interest in nature and the human connection to our landscape. The tactility of working with alternative techniques supports the deep connection she feels with nature.

Maureen received her BA in Psychology from Brown University and later attended the Academy of Art University earning an MFA in Photography, summa cum laude. After teaching coursework onsite in San Francisco at two local colleges Maureen moved with her family to Portland, Oregon. She currently teaches online alternative process classes in the undergraduate and graduate programs at The Academy of Art University. Her patient and nurturing approach to teaching fosters a safe and creative learning environment for students of all age levels and abilities.

OPUS XIV by Mark Roberts

Mark D. Roberts says of his series, 'Vanished: The Holocaust Portfolio', "In 1942, my mother, Lavern Dubois – against better advice – went on to perform the Mendelssohn E minor violin concerto in occupied Paris.

She fled to Switzerland that night, just minutes before the Gestapo arrived pounding on her door.

The stories that she would tell my brothers and me about the Nazi occupation were very chilling. Even though I was not witness to this horror, the stories my mom would tell me left me with some secondary wounds.

This portfolio is dedicated to the memory of those musicians and artists who disappeared during this horrific period. It is a very personal body of work that I have worked on for 30+ years, on and off; because of the heart-wrenching subject matter, I would take frequent and sometimes long-term sabbaticals from the work.

Spending hours in the dark room for this project made me focus on this very painful and tragic period. I think of all the musical treasures, works of art, and literature that were lost or destroyed, of the lives, disrupted or worse -- it is beyond my comprehension.

How many potential Mozarts, Picassos, and Mendelssohns have we lost? How many possible cures for heart disease and cancer? This is my way of keeping the remembrance of that tragic era with us, praying that it will never be repeated.  This body of work to me is somewhat like a series of Bach variations on a central theme, where I explore the subject matter through a series of variations. If my art has in any way the effect on the viewer that it has had on me, then I think it has some worth.

Chemigrams: the Process

Chemigrams are an alternative photographic process created by utilizing conventional photographic paper and chemistry. It breaks all the rules of traditional photography in that it is a process created in full room light, and with chemical contamination being an integral component.

The results that can be quite stunning – or heartbreaking – due to the unpredictability of the process. The process was invented in 1963 by the Swiss photographer Pierre Cordier. After studying with Pierre in the eighties, I have advanced the medium by introducing photographic images into the work. Examples of this process can be seen in my portfolios The Lost Manuscript Series, Stravinsky Suite, and Vanished."

Mark was born in Carmel, California. He gave up a performing music career when Ansel Adams introduced him to photography in the mid 1950s.

He was a participant in the first California gifted kids program at Stanford University. Mark published his Adam Without Eve portfolio in 1978 with encouragement from Robert Mapplethorpe.

He continued to work in large format photography until he studied with Pierre Cordier, who originated the chemigram process.

At this point Mark's work underwent a dramatic change and he started working almost entirely with chemigrams, producing a body of work that centered on topics such as the Holocaust, lost musical manuscripts, and Igor Stravinsky. He also experimented with Poloroid materials, producing hand-manipulated images as large as 4x4 feet in dimension.

Working today almost exclusively with alternative processes, Mark is recognized as one of the foremost artists working with Kirlian photography, notably in his portfolio The Secret Life of Plants.  In 2006, his work was featured in the book Alternative Photography: Art and Artists, Edition I, by Malin Fabbri.
