AUTO GLASS by Erica Martin
(Click on image for larger view)

Erica Martin says, "I grew up in the American West.  Mostly in Los Angeles, which sometimes puts a glossy veneer on the American Dream.  On family vacations, we would get in the car or the camper on my Grandpa’s truck, and drive to the wilder places.  Long highways leading to small towns, and vast vistas.  Places where churches and strip clubs exist on the same block, where one can buy homemade ice cream, assault weapons, knitting supplies or taxidermy all at the local drugstore.  Or where, looking the other direction, the untamed view takes ones breath away.  Many of the places I have photographed are changing rapidly, making way for high rises, strip malls, and box stores.

There is something quintessentially American about the big highways and lonesome winds, the strange glimpses of the selling of dreams, of momentary pleasures and necessities, the fortune tellers and coffee shops, the sacred next to the profane.  America is struggling at the moment, about which way to go, which side to choose, which road to follow.  The divides of race, gender, class, and tribe are ever more clearly drawn. With images of my hometown, and the roads leading out from it to the horizon, I am attempting to navigate the wilderness."

Erica photographs people in their surroundings, their rituals and the manifestations of their interior lives.  Her work concerns recurring themes of identity, transformation, and the paradox of human existence condensed in a moment.

Erica's work explores the inner lives of her subjects, and how they manifest who they are or would like to be.  She is interested in themes of identity, of growing up, of putting on or casting off masks.  She uses intimate portraits, along with prosaic places and things, to layer time, creating images that are mysterious yet immediate.

Honorable Mention
(Click on image for larger view)

Francis Sullivan lives in a tiny, round, rotating house atop a small mound of earth surrounded by large trees on the outskirts of Victoria, British Columbia. Having worked in commercial printing for over twenty years as a digital imaging specialist & pre-press technician, he now operates a small photographic business specializing in digital fine art printing and art reproduction services.

Francis is a self-taught photographer with over 40 years active involvement in photographic arts. He currently has a particular interest in the modern landscape: his explorations of rural and urban vistas reflect the influence of our contemporary culture, and he seeks out signage and graffiti, abandoned and discarded objects, cast-offs and cultural artifacts in an attempt at capturing the beauty, conceits and excesses of our present-day world.

His photographs hang in numerous private collections, and he has exhibited his work in various galleries in both group and solo shows in Canada and the U.S.A.

MILKING by Gary Beeber

Gary Beeber says, "Growing up, I loved the paintings of Edward Hopper and the photographs of Diane Arbus, Walker Evans and Eugene Atget.

I started out as a painter. I painted little photo-realistic watercolors based on my photographs, but eventually stopped painting altogether and concentrated on photography. For many years I photographed architectural details and landscapes. Later on, after producing and directing three documentary films and Gotham Burlesque, an off-Broadway burlesque/variety show, I became interested in taking pictures of people. I am fascinated with people who live unconventional lives.

These days I have again become interested in landscape."

Harry Longstreet says of his work, "No one just takes up space. The human condition is an entire canvas of thoughts, emotions and reactions to circumstances.

In my photography I try to capture the truth about diverse people and how they live and reflect their respective spaces.

My subjects never know they’ve been photographed. I don’t set-up or pose any shot and never employ anything but available light."

ABRAHAM by Heather Williamson
(Click on image for larger view)

Heather Williamson says, "Hello, my name is Heather. It's been some years to be able to say my name and feel good about it.

Many lives I've lived and had to rid (in just this lifetime) and I've realized, my name can be very important. It can be the name associated with the ones who are forgotten, and it can be the name I go to when I have forgotten about myself. I began shooting film when I was 7 only to pick it back up again when I was 14, the year after my grandmother (who raised me) died. You see, photography is very important for me, it's the air I breathe. It allows me to feel something other than me, but it also allows me to see something that is me in everything. When I don't want to feel a certain way or if I'm not feeling at all, the subjects of my work provide me with courage, strength, empathy, and humility.

They help me continue and move on, giving me. It can be easier to keep going or look away, but what others ignore, I gravitate towards. Sometimes I'm the only one who can see "it" and most times, it's suffering. (Occasionally it's happiness and that's when I can get a bit envious) Either way, feelings are very valuable to me. They are like names, they are currency.  The shots were taken right after I felt like I was about to snap, die, "lose it" and fly... Away. Far away from this world, these ways, these laws and this pain. But somehow, someone or something appears and I'm saved. When I'm behind the camera, no one is aware of the pain in my mind and if anything, the pain gives way to understanding.

I'm interested in the interesting, different, mad, beat up, worn out and weak. All this allows me to know what strength feels like and for that short amount of time behind the camera, I feel meaningful. But you know, just because someone looks or dresses a certain way, or even smiles, doesn't mean they aren't suffering. When I approach someone to shoot, some ask "What Do I Do?" My response to them is, "Whatever You Want." That moment or two, I see confused. Usually, people tell others what to do and many are more than willing to do as others say, but I want to see and show what you are...As is. I will wait, take one shot then walk (or drive) away.

It's important for me not to tell you how to feel or what to think, but my name is the one who shares stories, hopefully making you interested. Interested in what it may be like for another and even me.  I want you to be interested and I'd like to continue being interested and... Interesting."

Growing up Native American (with Gypsy roots) under the politically active and watchful eye of her adoptive grandmother, Heather collected and redeemed many qualities while absorbing endless ways and points of view. After her grandmother's death, she found herself catapulted into emancipation at the age of 14. This would also be the year she dove deeper into film photography.

In 2003, Heather moved to Los Angeles which became her home for the next decade. In LA, she embraced madness via photography, music, film, and writing, while also working along-side others for commercials, music videos, indie films and photo shoots.

Towards the end of 2012, she slowly found herself isolated, depleted and upon her return from Cuba, her passion for a creative life absorbed into a life barely alive.  "I found myself slowly isolated, not knowing where to go or who I was or was becoming. How does anyone know what to do when they see someone's face changing? So, I stopped everything. I stopped creating."

In 2014, after multiple moves, suicide attempts and hospitalizations, Heather found herself in the California Desert where she would be in treatment for over a year. She learned while being there, the most valuable piece of currency is her name. A long drawn out dusty and dirt filled road lay ahead, but she didn't mind. She also realized, your name is just as valuable as hers.

From 2015-Present she's back to her roots. She's shooting with the awareness, the subject of all her work is herself. No longer is anyone far from her, for she too is waiting in government lines, below poverty lines and trying to make sense of self and time. She has a blog for her writing, "The Recovering Life", a mixture of prose, lyric, epic, as well as opinion, magical realism and open letters about manipulation, gaslighting, race and disease. She is getting closer to solidifying a script that has been almost 10 years in the making and has written the first series of books for its prequel. She's also working on a series using American Flags for a voice as well as language depicted by using characters from other lives. She collaborates with a friend for music where she is the songwriter. She doesn't consider herself as singer, more of a Poetic Thug. One of her favorite things is to records sounds and make short films with a lot of help from creatures. She records herself and others too. She calls them, "Noisy Letters."    With these, she is embarking on installations showing (hearing) the effects one has when they reflect without being told.

Everything Heather uses to cope with "it all" seemingly helps until it doesn’t. When this happens, she remembers what it was like and what it's like now. It's not so much different, but instead of suppressing, she works on accepting and gets it on out.
A statement from the artist:

"It's not easy to open myself up and be vulnerable, but it's harder not to. I'm learning vulnerability is a gift. Sometimes I feel everything I live with is a curse, but in these moments where I am no longer "Me", I feel meaningful. I have a purpose. Some are no longer here to speak and some are not able nor willing to speak, but I'm here, so I will. We Must Speak About What's Killing Our Kind"
Heather currently resides in the California Desert. She practices Zazen, enjoys Paul Bloom and is interested in human behavior, psychology, theology, linguistics, religion, past lives and current ones.

EAGLE ROCK by Janice Tieken
(Click on image for larger view)

Janice Tieken says, "Photography is still a 'stepchild' to some in the art world. Everyone has a camera and everyone it seems takes pictures or makes photographs. Some artists use a camera to get source material for other mediums.

For me it has been for many years a 'pure' and valid art form in its own right. Otis didn't teach it in the early 70s and I'm glad since I was not swayed by the very rigid rules of the day back then. (except to feel out of the loop when I did not adhere, which I didn't)

I had my own rules and goals: composition, subject, emotional element, and for me especially the then-forbidden COLOR. I saw paintings through those lenses. Often it seemed, and still does seem, like dance. Split-second timing, balance, grace and a suggested story perhaps. I loved dance before I loved photography.

Always Looking is like breathing. Finding treasure in the street, on the road, on the rug, in the yard or a face.

I had no illusions of fame or fortune from Art so carried on doing what appealed to me and what struck me as saying something, with visual means. I taught myself things to know about cameras and film.

What I now know about Photoshop is pretty minimal and is all by experiment, trying things and looking for something that moves me. First with an image found and grounded in 'reality'. Creating paintings with dry means, on a screen. It is a candy store for the eye and mind. There is so much I still don't know. And alteration is now no longer illegitimate. An endless quest.

There is a camera always with me and the series I indulge in for my purposes change, with a few going quiet but not forgotten or lost, and a few that carry on due to life circumstances. The less mobile I am the more creative I must be to find something, wherever I am at any moment. Or try.

One series is Drive-By, shooting from the moving car, and another passion of late is surreptitiously capturing moments in restaurants, crowds, events, anywhere. My goals never really change: composition, color (mostly), content, concern for life, share an emotion, suggest a story; never to hurt or embarrass. That one is tricky when capturing moments that include unwitting strangers. They are always safe with me, though.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, I attended Brown University, received a BFA from Otis Art Institute 1974, an MA in psychology 1992 and maintain a California Marriage Family Therapist license, though on hiatus from that profession. I used art-making AS therapy with patients diagnosed with serious mental illness; creating art enhanced their self-esteem in those who very much need that support and respect. I published 2 recovery books via a HUD grant for earthquake survivors, “Homeward Bound”, and won a large FEMA grant to design and administer Project COPE, a unique program for disaster preparedness training.

I was able to return to art full time in 2001. In 2003 I received the international Silver Prize for Art and Science of Color in Kyoto for my Orchid Requiem series, by a jury of prominent figures in science and art, including Nobel laureates. The wonderful and talented Jerry Burchfield (RIP) invited me to have a solo show at Cypress College in 2006 and I won a Durfee Grant to facilitate its development.

In 2013 I had a solo show of the Orchid Requiem series within the Bloom show at MOAH (Lancaster Museum of Art and History) My work has been shown in museums, galleries and educational institutions. While engaging in other mediums – drawing, painting, writing poetry and parodies – photography has always offered what still intrigues me. It can suggest a story and/or provide a painting through the lens. As images are of something that was there, there is a presumption of reality, albeit edited or altered.

I collected images I called Anomalies and Conundrums for the surprise one finds in the seemingly mundane. I am attracted to the illusory, surprising, or stark, as well as generally a mood of quiet or calm.

Following Orchid Requiem I developed a group called Naked Lunch, derived from the contents and denizens of cobwebs, their portraits and tales told, digitally altered. Recent ongoing series are drawn from Nature: The TREES; The TIDES; ISLANDS. The elements of Time and its passing, life and its losses, are ever present. Drive-By’s, CONDOR DOLLY. More.

I recently self-published a book on Condor Dolly, ambassadress for the California Condor preservation efforts. It is in the archives of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.

An active participant in Micol Hebron's Gallery Tally project, shown at LACE in Los Angeles and internationally, I have produced 9 posters to date. As Finalist in the 7th Julia Margaret Cameron awards, two of my photographs were in the 2016 Berlin Foto Biennale and 5 are in the book. A fellow of the Black and White Spider Awards and International Color Awards my images are chosen yearly as nominees.

A new series of diptychs drawn primarily from Street Photography and Drive-by images align disparate elements that invite inquiry. I am never without a camera in hand, always looking, seeking that cluster of elements and compositions that catch my eye. My goal has been to produce images that are both aesthetically pleasing and emotionally affecting."

A LEAF AND A WRAPPER by Kate Carvellas
(Click on image for larger view)

Kate Carvellas says, "I photograph anything that I find to be uniquely beautiful.  Although often simply arranged, the balance of form and texture of my photographs has a very calming and quiet quality about them. There is something beautiful in the everydayness of them, highlighting minor details which most people wouldn't recognize and drawing ones attention to them.

In 2004, after almost a 20 year break from making art, I began creating two-dimensional thematic montages using imagery from various magazines and clip art sources. With further exploration I began to pursue a different direction, creating, original, three dimensional collages.  In 2007 I began exploring the creative world of mixed media and assemblage and fell in love with both of these media.

11 years ago my work was made entirely of borrowed images and objects.  Through the years, I slowly began leaving my own marks on the work.  Starting out with light pencil markings to more visible lines and shapes.  As my confidence grew, so did the strength of my marks and brush strokes.  While I am is still deeply enjoying creating assemblages out of found objects, I now create work made entirely from my own hand.  These painting, at first, sprang straight from my subconscious.  Lately, however, I have also been using my own photographs as the springboard for my abstract paintings.  Abstracting reality.
Most recently my ongoing journey of creative expression has led me to a new and unexpected place.  While I have loved photography since high school, and have been taking photographs almost every day for years, I have only just begun to exhibit and sell my photographs.  I love finding beauty in the world in unexpected places."

CHENA LAKES by Kathryn Reichert
(Click on image for larger view)

Kathryn Reichert says of her work, "Often when I watch my kids play I wonder what it is that they will remember as they grow older. For me, as I’m sure for many others, memories come back in snippets of small details (they must have seemed so big at the time!), washes of color, and the ghost of a feeling on my skin. The dog days of summer are what I recall most: beaded sweat around my hairline, dirt etched in the lines of my hands and on my knees, the sounds of crickets and cicadas and the sun glaring down through the trees. I don’t always remember where I was or what I was doing, but I always remember the blades of grass sticking into my bare feet and the silhouettes of my brother and sister running and shouting alongside me.

Now I live somewhere new: my husband and I chose to begin our family across the country. The winters are longer, the trees encased in ice and the aurora dancing across the sky nearly half of the year. At the height of summer, the sun hangs overhead nearly 24 hours a day. There are no crickets, but instead the incessant buzz of mosquitoes. But even in this new place and decades later, I see my son focused on the crunch of the snow and my daughter delighted at the dust she kicks up when stomping her feet in the dirt and a wave of nostalgia washes over me. Through time and place, these are the things we share."

Kathryn Reichert was born and raised in New Jersey. Her restlessness and love of adventure kept her traveling along the eastern seaboard whenever possible and she found she enjoyed photographing all of the moments along the way. She was stationed in Alaska as a soldier in the US Army and has remained since.

She returned to school in 2015 to pursue bachelor’s degrees in both business and the arts at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Her current projects utilize forced perspective and manipulation as a means of exploring imaginary places and "what-if" scenarios. She mainly shoots digital imagery but enjoys incorporating film and alternative processes into her workflow.

A GIRL AND HER FAMILY VIETNAM 2017 by Ken Weingart
(Click on image for larger view)

Ken Weingart says, "The fine art photography that I am currently creating is focused on the obstacles and situations that people find themselves in.  I capture the essence of the denizens of California and the world— the locals, the visitors and the struggles they encounter. My main interest is shooting people and connecting them to life stories through journalistic style fine art photography.  I want to continue creating people oriented stories — both the non-fiction genre with political and social purpose — as well as staged i.e. “controlled” storytelling. I hope to branch out further in art with a storytelling process utilizing mixed media, collage, and video art — blending them all together with photography."

Ken Weingart has worked and lived in New York City, Los Angeles, Italy, and Spain. He has won numerous awards including being selected for the Communication Arts Photo Annual, and his editorial and advertising work has been widely published all over the world.  His client list has included French Vogue, Entertainment Weekly, and he has been pursing fine art photography for six years.  Ken’s Art and Photography Blog  features original in depth interviews of many of the world’s most important artists including: Roger Ballen, Gregory Crewdson, Joel Peter Witkin, Holly Andres, Thomas Demand, Alejandro Cartagena, Arne Svenson, Mark Seliger, Erwin Olaf, Martin Schoeller and more. The Blog has been syndicated in prestigious journals and sites such and Lenscratch, PetaPixel, Digital PhotoPro, and American Photo.

DIVIDED HOUSE by Laurinda Bedingfield
(Click on image for larger view)

Laurinda Bedingfield says, "I am a lifelong resident of the art community of Somerville, Massachusetts, USA just outside of Boston.

The first  third of my life was about  drawing, painting and archaeology….the second third was about engineering/construction and now…my life has come full circle to the visual arts.  Since leaving the world of engineering 15 years ago, I have explored; printmaking, artists’ books, photography, encaustic, graphic design, mixed media, sculpture and in the past 3 years:  painting and collage.

However, photography has been the one constant over my lifetime.  I began “shooting’ with a Pentax 35mm SLR in the seventies.  I have worked as a news photographer and done my share of dark room time. Now I enjoy the digital process as well as toy or “Lo-Fi” cameras.  I do not do much editing of my photos unless they become source material for some other construction.  I enjoy taking photographs that can stand on their own.

Through both photography, painting and collage my work attempts to create compelling narratives. Each piece employs subtle humor and/or absurdity to some degree.  I had a playful attitude towards the work in this submission. When in a playful mood, I create a secure environment for myself to experiment.  I love to explore and push boundaries. “It’s just a game” opens a world of possibility. Crazy ideas do not seem so crazy anymore as I spot subject matter on my daily walks.  Lately I have been using my cell phone camera and a toy camera for my daily photo diary.    I like the surprises and mistakes that turn into magic in the images (if I am lucky).  That is the approach I have taken in creating these works that relate to the theme of “Vernacular”.  Excavating the ordinary elements of my environment brings them to light as extraordinary moments.  Those moments are all around us."

READING BOWERY by Lawrence Schwartzwald
(Click on image for larger view)

Lawrence Schwartzwald says, "Back in the early ‘70’s, probably 1971 or 1972, I picked up a copy of Andre Kertesz’s ON READING, which was recently published, and I was impressed by and a bit envious of his black and white photographs of people in different cities around the world in the act of reading."

Kertesz was a native of Hungary (b.1894) but he also lived in Paris and New York where he created many of his images and he also travelled to photographed his subjects in Venice, Manila, Buenos Aires, etc. ON READING was published in ‘71, coincidentally the same year Diane Arbus (b.1923) took her own life at the age of 48. In 2001, my candid image of a book vendor, with a scandalous bit of derriere exposed reading one of his own books for sale beside a cardboard sign that read “ROMANCE BOOKS 1.00” on Columbus Avenue, ran large in The New York Post, making a minor sensation.

Soon after, The New York Observer ran a hilarious column about the image (“Wisecracking On Columbus Avenue” July 23, 2001) and since then I have continued to seek out the readers and to discretely photograph my subjects—mostly solitary and often incongruous, desperate or vulnerable—engaged in what seems to be a vanishing art—The Art of Reading. (abridged)"

Lawrence Schwartzwald’s images have appeared in the New York Times, the Times Literary Supplement, The New York Review of Books, and elsewhere. Some of the images in The Art of Reading first appeared in The New York Post, New York Magazine, and on Narratively.com, Slate.com, Newswhistle.com, DIY Photography.com, Transtierros.blogspot.com, and ElizabethAvedon.blogspot.com.

Born in the Bronx, Lawrence Schwartzwald currently lives and works in Manhattan. He has recently published a Zine, READING NEW YORK and FAMOUS POETS, a photo essay, printed by Oddi Press.

AUSSIE PUB VERNACULAR by Lis Bailly
(Click on image for larger view)

Lis Bailly says, “I am an intuitive explorer of the natural world, exploring ways of seeing, finding something interesting in an everyday place.  My photography and fine art work share a strong sense of graphic space and abstraction, as well as visceral response to colour, light, texture. The rhythms and balance of the whole is what I look for – fully formed compositions, seen in passing, that have a presence that communicates that ‘everything is important’.”

Lis Bailly resides in Victoria, B.C., Canada where as an art director and graphic designer, her interests and experience cover a broad spectrum of design disciplines. Education includes a B.A. Fine Art from Guelph University and she is an Honorary Graduate of the Victoria College of Art.

She is now focussed on personal creative projects including photography, cyanotype and book design. Recent solo exhibitions include Beach Alchemy: New Cyanotypes at Art Atelier 54 (2015); Beyond Appearances & The Paper Series at Dales Gallery (2015); New Horizons at Luz Gallery (2011). Lis also curates ‘Artstrata’, an online art gallery featuring a creative community based on the West Coast of Canada.

MONEY MATTER by Magdeleine Ferru
(Click on image for larger view)

Magdeleine Ferru- JustMagd says, "Different style photographer, what i feel connects with what I have seen, what I have lived.... To live abroad, learning new languages, traditions, discovering other beliefs, religion, lifestyle....Witnessing other's life through the eye of my camera, bringing it into my travel photos.
I have observed and now i feel: getting it all out through collages and mises-en-scene. I explore those feelings as well as matter : the body, the identity and society, human nature, our environment, natural or urban...
Mix of portraits/nude and landscapes/travels (to the widest meaning), my photos are the result of my years of simply leaving with others, in a world constantly changing."

JustMagd- is a french photographer, who, after studying photography in Montréal in 2002, has been traveling and trying to discover as much of the world as she could for the past 10 years.
It is her exhibition "Tokyo dans mon Keitai" in Tokyo in 2009 (under the patronage of the French Ambassy) that makes her want to show more of her work. She, then gain self-confidence and obtain awards in different
photo contest.

In 2010, she decided to go back to school to learn graphic design, and got into a 5 months program in Montauban. Learning website building basics was part of the course, but what really caught her interest was studying lay out, designing books or magazines. She did a 2 weeks internship at a design agency in Ibiza, and contributed as photographer/graphic designer to expat magazines in Seoul.

She attends a workshop "Traveling Photos" with Jacques Sierpinski in Toulouse, and "Family album" avec Alain Laboile in Aix en Provence, using each meeting, course, shops, etc...as a great opportunity to learn from experienced photographers.

Some of her projects are brought to life through hand-made unique books; MagD upcycles, makes, creates, mixing matter to her visual work.

DESTROY by Marie Durquet
(Click on image for larger view)

Marie Durquet says, "The photographs from the series “Skate Style” celebrate the individuality and creative expression of skateboarders at the Potrero Del Sol skate park in San Francisco.

In 2008, when this skate park opened, people came from all over the Bay Area to enjoy it. I was drawn to the artistic aspects of the skateboarding culture- the clothes, the shoes, the art on the back of the boards, and I asked people if I could make portraits of them. Here is a glimpse of this little section of the Mission neighborhood in San Francisco- young and old, from all backgrounds, gathered together for fun."

Marie-Jose Durquet was born in the Basque region of France and received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her BA in Studio Art from the University of California, Davis.  She was a Peace Corps volunteer, teaching Art in Botswana and has been on the photography faculty at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, the San Francisco Art Institute, The University of California Berkeley, and California State University, Hayward.

She has participated in numerous exhibitions locally, nationally and internationally and has shown work at the Scott Nichols gallery and the Andrea Schwartz gallery, both in San Francisco.

Although photography is her primary medium, she has also completed multi-media and public art projects. Her photographs reflect various places where she has lived, and range in style from documentary to abstract and conceptual. One example is the project “Almost Gone,” color photographs based on sidewalk drawings by the artist, depicting endangered species in California. An interest in cultures and environments facing threats to their survival has led her to photograph in such places as Puerto Rico and Vieques. She has made several trips to the Carribean, in particular documenting Haitian art, artists, and architecture. In recent years, she has focused her lens on women in cities, and on architecture in Lisbon, Portugal.

HOLLYWOOD HITS by Mark Levinson
(Click on image for larger view)

Mark Levinson says, "I love to search out odd and curious aspects of commonplace scenes that normally go unnoticed.

Some of them are just odd or overlooked fragments of our surroundings.  Some are unexpected juxtapositions that appear to me, often fleetingly.  Others show eccentric artifacts of the real world--I have only to see them and aim my camera.
Taken together, these images may seem to depict a strange reality.  But they are really just reflections of the domains we inhabit every day."

Mark Levinson is a photographer living in Lincoln, MA.  During a long career in high-tech, he has remained passionate about his photography, pursuing a personal vision of the urban and natural world.

Levinson’s work has been exhibited in many local shows, including the juried Mass Art annual Spring auction and the Photography Atelier at the Griffin Museum of Photography, Winchester, MA.  He has photographed extensively for the Sudbury Valley Trustees, a Massachusetts land conservation organization.  Many of his landscape photographs of SVT properties have appeared on their web site and in their publications, and have been important aids to their conservation efforts.

He studied photography at M.I.T. in the 1970’s and more recently at the Griffin Museum of Photography.  He is a member of the Griffin Museum of Photography and on board of directors of the Bedford, MA Center for the Arts Photo Group.

CULVER CITY by Maureen Haldeman
(Click on image for larger view)

Maureen Haldeman says, "As a photographer I choose to capture a wide range of subject matter, spanning all realms of nature as well as the urban landscape … and as an artist I do not merely want to duplicate what is in front of my lens; I do not want to create mirror images. My photographs represent emotions rather than actual depictions and the familiar is often absent. My intention is to convey a mood that will evoke a sense of time and place that the viewer will contemplate and attach his or her personal feelings to."

Maureen Haldeman, was born in Holland and grew up in Montreal. A long time resident of Los Angeles, she studied Art History and Fine Art Photography at UCLA and subsequently taught photography at the college level. 405 FREEWAY by Maya Dreilinger
(Click on image for larger view)

Maya Dreilinger says, "I have documented the city: on the streets, in the subways, through the varied windows of cars and quarters in NY, LA, Tel Aviv, Ramallah, Paris and Vienna. I am an alumna of both Cal Arts and the International Center of Photography, and my artwork has often been characterized as being lyrical and documentary in nature.

When I was in my teens, I had a stack of postcards by Walker Evans- architectural pictures -a post office in Alabama, a mayor’s office, shacks, churches, factories and train stations, street corners, frame houses in Virginia, small towns.  Some of these photographs went against the grain of all my aesthetic sensibilities (the cropping, bland tonality, stiffness) and, yet, I cherished them.
What struck me was how charged and poetic documentary evidence can be, an evocative point of view, without a human in sight.
I have strived to capture silence within the chaos; an image which holds stillness allows for its subjects to be heard.
Now, once more, Evans has inspired me:  this time to allow for chaos to reign in a human-less vista."

FRESH JERKY by Nancy Kaye
(Click on image for larger view)

Nancy Kaye says, "People and the passage of time are major themes in my personal work. Photography enables me to combine my interests in art and sociology, recording observations of what may otherwise go unnoticed and finding meaning in what may only be seen superficially.

I’m often drawn to the commonplace, the simple and the small moments that can say much about how life is lived. I’m watchful of people as they move through public spaces, and the endless juxtapositions with their environment that this flow creates.

While I look to visually record contemporary life, I’m also inspired by the nostalgia and the echoes of the past evoked by scenes of Americana. These images—and others that show the mark left by what humans have created—reflect my desire to explore human behavior and culture.

A photograph can, in the short term, capture a slice of life, and, over time, offer a perspective on the past. Whether a photograph shows a moment within a scene or a moment in history, my goal is to preserve it in the most visually captivating way I can.

With my photos, I strive to communicate what I observe of human behavior—honest, unposed, unaltered, and often with humor. Photography has given me license to do what might be otherwise thought of as impolite¬—to stare and to question."

Nancy Kaye is a professional photographer and photography teacher in Los Angeles. She received her bachelor’s degree in journalism and sociology at Kent State University. The core of her professional background is in photojournalism having previously worked in New York City and London for a variety of news companies, among them The Washington Post, The New York Times, and Associated Press. She brings a narrative style to her personal projects and fine art photography.

AMERICAN APPLIANCE by Natalie Christensen
(Click on image for larger view)

Natalie Christensen says "I live in Santa Fe New Mexico where my work is inspired by commonplace architecture and streetscapes.

I shoot every day and am almost never without my camera. I don't have to go anywhere special to make my photography; instead I find my images around shopping centers, apartment complexes and office parks. I dismantle these scenes to color fields, geometry and shadow. The places I frequent for my images are probably not what people visualize when they think of the city I live in, a major tourist destination with a carefully cultivated image. I choose to shoot in locations that may be viewed as uninteresting or even visually off-putting. This is exciting and challenging for me, to “see” something hiding in plain sight. Much of my professional life has been spent as a psychotherapist, and my photography as an extension of that work. Both have called me to explore what is hidden from view, those aspects of the self or the environment that we want to turn away from or simply avoid. I suspect it is our nature to ignore what is unpleasant, but sometimes I get a glimpse of the sublime in these ordinary places. When I find it, it feels like I have discovered gold."

Natalie Christensen is a photographer based in Santa Fe, New Mexico and is a frequent contributor to online contemporary and fine art photography magazines, has won several regional awards and shown work in the U.S. and internationally.  In addition to pursuing her interests in art and design, Natalie has worked as a psychotherapist for over 25 years and has been particularly influenced by the work of depth psychologist, Carl Jung. This influence is evidenced in her photographs, as shadows and psychological metaphors are favored subjects

Nathalie Heinke, Germany, Frankfurt/M., says, "I studied art history and english literature and work as a freelance editor. But as some things are far better expressed with pictures I started photographing some years ago.  The photographs shown express a feeling that arose some months ago.

A yearning for simplicity. For little things in which I find beauty. In everyday life. The images were shot with an iphone, I used the traditional Instagram format. Whereas on Instagram very often perfect worlds are being shown, mine is just ordinary. Scenes taken in my kitchen. Still life-like moments."

BLUE PLASTER HOSTEL by Elaine Oves
(Click on image for larger view)

Elaine Oves says, "These photographs are part of a small set, depicting everyday sights and life for surfers, composing a large part of the (small) population in Taghazout, Morocco.  I find that the sense of photography should be described simply, or not at all, so it is does not place boundaries to forming opinions.

Some deem the analog process to be outdated, but I remain loyal to 35mm because I find it to be candid.  Modern technology and programs, like Adobe Photoshop, make it possible to create brilliant photographs, edited to perfection. The purpose of my work is to capture and to share views of the man-made world in their remarkable, natural state."

Elaine Oves is a Russian-American student in a dual Masters program between HEC Paris and Freie Universitaet Berlin.  Although her studies and career have long since diverged from photography, Oves' passion resides in the artistic realm.  Oves is a self-taught analog photographer.

Pablo Estrada says, "My photographs are about the environment that surrounds me.

All of my projects are done in series. I work in long-term series because it allows me to explore in depth and possibly change the narrative of the project through critique or personal opinion. I create limitations in my series because it challenges me to think within the limitations that I have created or create a new projects from the first set of limitations. All of my projects coincide within each other but they all address different aspects of my environment.

Pablo Estrada is a photographer living and working in South Central Los Angeles.
Estrada self-publishes  zines, prints and books from the photographs he makes. Estrada received his MA at California State University Northridge where he also received a BFA in photography in 2015.
